Interesting thing I read in a thread: Every member of Shigaraki's family died in the way they lived, or treated him: -the dog died as an emotional support lovingly in his arms -Hana died with her back turned to him looking out for her parents in fear -the mother died while trying to comfort and save shigaraki -the grandparents died while standing by watching from the sidelines without getting involved -the father died while trying to solve the problem with violence
@@connorwood9211 true, but I’m referring to it in the sense that Deku is the main protagonist and Shiggy is the main antagonist. Two sides of the same coin.

Stress= power is a crazy quirk. It’s pretty easy to build up too as stress is excessively common in the day to day, even more so for a leader of a group like this.
I love that everyone who watches this show knows Stress is an OP quirk because everyone is stressed the heck out. And to be in charge of 110,000 people and run an organization that plans on toppling the government is INSANELY stressful because he doesn’t appear to be an unempathetic monster
It really is no wonder why Shigaraki had adopted such strong views on hero society and its faults. And honestly, like a lot of great villains, he’s not completely wrong. He has every right to be furious at the world for what it did to him.
The freest people don't mind being criminals behind bars. The ones most honest to themselves lie to everyone else. Yeah, this world is, and will always be, fucked up.
Shiggy's backstory is yet another hint at the whole "nature vs nurture" argument that's very present in the world of MHA. Even someone like Shiggy, someone who's power literally only destroys things, someone who's literally genetically predisposed to destroy, CAN still be a hero and a good person with the correct upbringing. Same goes for Toga or any other character really. She became psychotic serial killer as a consequence of her upbringing. We have no idea what a "sane Toga" looks like, but we know she could've existed.
- In the manga Shigi's left hand destroyed when Re-Destro landed on him, to the point it only had 2 fingers left. Which were the once to touch Re-Destro. Hence it's why Re-Destro had no fears getting that close since it was believed without all his fingers he would no longer be able to use Decay. Also weird change the anime made was the Stress ball was weaker cause Shigi touched his hand the last second. Manga he touched the ball which weakened it - There's a theory that Shigi only scratches because of anxiety. Which is why it was at worst at home. - The author did make a sketch were Shigi also wore to of his dogs paws in his head
There is a part missing from the manga that should have taken place right at the beginning of the flashback: Tenko was apparently brought back home by a man who said the kid was lost in the neighborhood and the mother thanking the stranger. Said stranger had his hand on Tenko head and VERY SUSPICIOUSLY looked like All for One. That lead to the theory that Tenko quirk, which caused this disaster wasn't even his own original one and AfO granted him Decay in order for the quirk to go haywire and cause the catastrophe to manipulate Tenko into becoming his heir. Quirks you weren't born with are out of synch with the new user and can cause discomforts, like the hitching or Deku breaking his hurting himself with OfA. If it's true, AfO probably did it to mess with All Might because Tenko/Shiragaki is the grandkid of Nana, All Might mentor and previous holder of OfA
The most tragic part of this to me is that Kotarou likely would have changed his ways and worked towards becoming a better father. It's clear based on his guilt and his family's reaction that this was the first time he'd ever hit Tenko, so if Shigaraki's quirk had manifested a different way, Kotarou would have likely had a similar redemption arc to Endeavor, and Tenko's life could have been much better.
Kotaro: at the very worst slapped his kid twice and felt bad for it. Fandom: Irredemable monster reeee. Tomura: Deadass a psychopath with how many bodies at his feet. Fandom: He just needs a hug. Like you can like Tomura more as a person but if you genuenly belive he is morally better then you are more deluded than a Eren supporter.
What I liked about Shigaraki's story is it answers a question many people don't often do. What happens when someone gets powers and it's a heavily traumatic experience. He has every reason to be traumatized as a little kid having that happen to him. Worse, because of All Might and Gran Torino's promise to avoid her family and leave them alone in peace they weren't able to save him mentally.
As the saying goes, “All it takes is one bad day.” It’s not far from the truth. Shigaraki had already had a horrible life, and all it took was one horrible day for it all to snap. Also, Shigaraki’s dad is also a contender for “worst father.” On one note, he technically wasn’t as bad as Endeavor was since he was able to understand how horrible he was after one intervention, but he also did a LOT of damage.
The anime typically does a form of censorship with Shigaraki's quirk. Back in S1, we saw that he decayed Aizawa's elbow until he reached muscle. But every instance after, it was less of a breakdown and more of turning to stone and crumbling. This episode still had a bit of the stone aspect but it also captured the horror of the manga by still showing the chunks. I think it's really tragic how things turned out. Nana knew that AFO was likely going to take her out. So she hid her son away in an attempt to keep her family safe. But because she vanished without a trace and very little explanation, Kotaro didn't understand. Not to mention, he was a child. So he grew up with that regret and sadness until it eventually became hate. But instead of dealing with his emotions, he bottled it up and took it out on his children. In the manga, we actually see him hit Tenko so hard that he physically falls over. And then he hits him again. So, bit of anime Censorship. Tenko wanted to be a hero. But his dad rejected him, and his family didn't exactly help. They just told him not to cry. And when they finally did step up, it was too late. The house was destroyed, family and all. He says the itch went away. We see Tenko itch after this incident however. So I wonder if the itch is his quirk quite literally begging him to destroy something he doesn't like. Or if it's more of an anxiety thing. Where he starts itching whenever he's uncomfortable. Either way, Nana's attempt to protect her family from AFO actually ended up pushing them right into his hands. The act of good ended up creating the successor to the Ultimate Evil.
Shigaraki's past is legit tragic but also a great way of showing off his true feelings on the world and how they were shaped, also this is where he became one of my favorite villains in fiction
8:22 Something notable about this part that nobody mentions: notice how Shigaraki only uses two of his fingers here. That's because in the manga, the other two fingers were crushed completely by Re-Destro and were severed. His words about testing Tomura were literal since it meant he stopped him from using his quirk outright. That's why Re-Destro is so surprised that Shigaraki can use the quirk afterwards, because it should be impossible.
While I do think Shigi's dad not wanting his kids to die working as heroes is a _part_ of why he did what he did, I don't think that's the primary issue he has. It seems much more personal to me. I think he resents his _mother_ more than he resents heroes as a whole. He calls her *"a savage who abandoned her child."* Not "a hero who died doing something stupid" or "reckless" or "an idiot," he calls her a "savage" and directly blames her for not being there for him as he grew up. He believes his own mother chose hero work over her son out of selfishness, greed, and/or violence. He doesn't know why she gave him up. In many ways, he's a lot like Kota when we first meet him.
Shigaraki has a very sad backstory. Seemingly only itching because of anxiety and no one trying to protect him/being a bystander. Alternate reality where he had support he might have become a good rescue hero or something, clearing debris and whatnot. Also yeah Stress is a very cool quirk power, very unique.
"Greetings aspiring young 7-year-old girl! I noticed you've not stood up to your abusive father, and in fact you deflected blame onto your 5-year-old brother to avoid punishment. I recommend you apologize to your brother, and approach the relevant authorities to resolve this domestic abuse crime. Otherwise, your younger brother may obtain a 'gun' to defend himself, and he'll definitely be after you as well!"
One of the saddest parts is, that though the rest of the family were bystanders for too long.. Shiggy couldn't have known right on that day, we saw the rest of the family confront the dad and say they refuse to allow it any longer. I don't feel bad for the grandparents still though, they were probably still just listening to other people, the mother this time. But we see the difference in all their final moments. Dog died just being a comfort animal, Sister died running away from any problem, grandparents died literally just watching and not doing anything, mother went to hug or console her child no matter what while dying, and the dad hit his child with a pipe before dying.
While the reading of Shigaraki through his quirk first is wrong, as is the idea of letting superpowers be both unchecked AND the measure of a person's worth... Redestro is not wrong in that Shigaraki isn't someone who can build. His mindset is that of a destroyer. Though it's not his quirk that causes that. Otherwise 13 would be one too. Heck, she's ostensibly a living gravitational singularity. Yet she became a kind teacher and rescue specialist. In another timeline, she could have been a good teacher for Shiggy. But he was born in a house of pain and raised with a steady diet of hate when the devil took him off the streets.
Okay so now that I caught up by speed watching hopefully you see this: I’m sure you saw what everyone else said already about how the anime failed at truly adapting everything but here’s a run down of everything (that I remember) that was cut: Redestro was introduced earlier in the manga and the built up to his group is a lot more natural so you would probably care more if it was done the same in the manga This arc is supposed to take place before class a vs b Shigaraki’s hand was half cut of (as in he lost two fingers) in this fight This arc is supposed to be narrated by spinner (and it does wonders for his characterization) Not something that was cut out but I would also like to point out that most if not all characters can be pointed out on how their quirks influenced their personalities (toga is the best example ofc) however shigaraki is a VERY good example of this, as he has shown the “itch” to literally destroy everything that pisses him off to a unnatural degree I’m probably forgetting but if anyone has more please reply here and I will edit it in the list, and also please like this so it’s easier to see
More things that I remember being cut, Giran's interrogation was actually shown and he was just insulting the liberation army pretty much, sure it was summarized in MVA episode 1 but I think seeing it in the moment would make him more underrated, less of a damsel in distress. Creature Rejection Clan was left out for a while but thankfully it was put back in. Better late than never... There was another mention of quirk counseling by Curious that was left out, only other time I can remember was in Season 2 about Shigaraki but it hurts worldbuilding when things like this are forgotten about. In that same episode of MVA with Curious, the initial report of her death by Trumpet was cut out, and it removes context for why the swarm went after Shigaraki which he started awakening decay against. This includes the comparison one League member made of the army to a bunch of cultists, interesting since their first fight was with an actual cult. A bit of characterization from Skeptic talking to Giran in MVA episode 3 That's all I remember now
So I’m going to defend another bit of change from MVA and that’s the censoring. The truth is Shigaraki decays everyone like his family and Aizawa’s elbow all the way back in season 1. But no mind no matter how sadistic you are can handle that level of gore and he blots it out and he and we see a Medusa effect of sorts making things look like stone and turning into powder. And I think that’s clever. (Also unlike season 4, season 5 was in an earlier time slot on tv so it was a bit more censored for kids.) This is still among the most traumatizing episodes of MHA. And now it’s going to be your SECOND nightmare of a puppy puddle from Anime. Ugh.
@@xenoemblem7 XD season 1-3 I get, but once season 4 came around and everything took its much darker turn between Eri’s backstory, MVA, and EVERYTHING that comes after this, I think maybe wait til you’re a teen to save the nightmares.
Spinner saying he needs to take as much of Shiggy's load as he can will never not make me giggle like a little kid. Also Alicia, I'm surprised seeing a dog in an anime didn't make you go "Oh god no."
My friend who has a kid says this episode is the one episode is she can't watch again. Says she kept seeing her little boy in lil shigarakis place and it broke her heart.
Man, Alicia truly has lost it huh? I guess all the emotional damage that FMA caused her 😞Also, if I remember correctly, there used to be someone who tried to help someone but the person that they helped sued them instead, and that's why some people are afraid to do anything to help.
We might not agree on a lot of things but I’m glad to see we both have a similar/same distain for bystanders. I *GENUANLY* hope and am rooting for Deku to Save Shigaraki. Justified as he is.
i really appreciated the character development in this anime characters like Shigaraki Bakugo and Endeavor who in season 1 and 2 i actively disliked developed into my favorates.
From what I remember stress comes from the hormone cortisol, so redestro was capable of storing heavy amounts of cortisol to become powerful now imagine giving this to the most stressed out person you can think of like Steven Universe, a college student, 24 hour worker in Walmart all of that will store in and you’ll be able to refill the next day
I'm given to understand that in Japan, this whole bystander thing is pretty common in this particular situation. People are encouraged to be bystanders because it's considered hella rude to tell someone how to raise their own kid, so abusive parents are just... free to go about.
no shiting on you for liking shigy, becus even i love his charecter, but i had a very diferent reaction to his back story, becus its so humman, you cant realy blame shigy, you cant blame his sister becus thers just kids, it just feel sad to see a broken house going to point of absolute tragedy, the one with the most respossibylyty in the story is his dad, but you also see him being a produc of his trauma, if we don blame shigy for what his doing as a yough adult becus of his trama, if feel wrong to just blame the dad too, for me its just a sad story with no happy end in sight, that why i just wana hug shigy...but he would erasse me xD
You laugh a little too hard when he kills his father. His father didn't deserve to die, he was unhappy almost all his life and doesn't want it to start again with these children, even if the way he choose it was hard, his father didn't deserve that. If for you he deserves it, the same fate is deserved to characters like, Endji Todoroki, Tenko Shimura, Himiko Toga, Jin Bubaiwara. After seeing the back story of the villains, do you think they deserve to die, and that we're laughing? Because that's what you just did. Other than that I really like your videos ;)
If you abuse your kids you should go 0/1 IRL simple as that. And yes all of the characters on your list deserve it. Except maybe Endeavor, for whom it was mostly escalated training and he did see the error of his ways.
These memories are the worst. I can't stand them. They are terribly sad and depressing. Be born with the power of what you touch you destroy. Almost like Midas. His psyche was destroyed. Poor kid. But it can be fixed but you have to reach him. There's this sad boy somewhere deep inside.
I’ve been looking forward to the reaction to this episode AND the other reaction to FMA Brotherhood going into Scar’s backstory. The fact that both happened on the same day was SUCH a delightful treat. Two powerful, dark episodes exploring the origin of one of the antagonists. SO fucking good. Thank you for sharing these moments with us. ❤
Considering how Dabi looks, I would expect him to specifically NOT know a good plastic surgeon. That guy looks like he's been put together by someone in their garage with scraps and tools meant to repair cars or appliances, not a professional doctor...
Shiggy was always on my radar because I knew AFO was pulling some shit. Knowing his backstory made me sad, but because of [MANGA SPOILERS] AFO is on the shit list. Shiggy has been betrayed, abandoned and used his entire life, and like society did nothing seeing a scared child in tatters? REALLY?! He's easily what Deku could have become, and Stain is an example of that muddy water in between. He needs love, hugs and a shit ton of therapy, and society itself really needs to change. Has a few too many parallels with real life and my own experiences being neurodivergent and the absolute lack of support and expectations to conform with society.
So Deku just finished fighting a villain who can kill people with a touch (Overhaul) and Shigaraki is fighting someone who uses a % based strength power.
So something i want to bring up. Alicia people dont get quirks if they havent manifested by the age of 4. Thats the rule shigaraki was 5 meaning he was quirkless as well. Which ultimately means his quirk isnt his own
Counterpoint, Dabi CAN"T know a good plastic surgeon since he's still staple face and missing skin over most of his body. If he did know a good one, he could probably also find someone to do skin grafts.
There are episodes in anime that completely polarize me against certain characters. This one made me so angry and disgusted at Shigaraki that I almost gave up the show, in its original airing. I grew up as a child of abuse. My mother was addicted to drugs, had to spend time in jail from time to time, and I would get dumped from household to household. When I was with her, I had to survive her boyfriends. Some were just emotionally or psychologically abusive, one was very physically abusive. I'll carry that shit my entire life. I only say it because I want to emphasize that I understand the childhood Shigaraki story and I hate it. Hating it makes me hate the character... it makes me hate the show when I think about it. The welling of emotions when I watch it causes this non-sense paragraph stream of consciousness. I don't want to explain all the in's and out's of the feelings... I just want to express that I will never feel empathy for Shigaraki. All I have for him is hate.
I’m glad you brought up the bystander affect because it really is one of the most annoying and despicable things to do when someone else is hurting in public. It is a bs thing about society and it still happens a lot.
@@GabrielRojasAhumada except that we can totally trust all for one there, because the flashback of AFO finding shiggy calls him "tenko shimura" before he says that to all might. also, AFO is riding the high of hitting all might with the truth, why would he lie? that undermines the entire point.
@@Yal_Rathol yeah but we could have been tricked. Specially considering they said that in season 3 and then left that until season 5. In the same amount of time a lot in the series change, for example who the traitor is, another one of those things that was never mentioned again...
Oh the backstory that mad me feel all kimds of things made me love Shigaraki more as a character but i hate they skipped so much of this arc in the manga this arc was suppose to be the first arc this season after those battles with the students
Yup. Not even Hawks was as tragic. Mental and physical abuse for a kid just being a kid. I grew up under corporal punishment, and there are some lines you don't cross. The father well crossed the line. Yes, his mom left him behind, but the threat that they would have faced if she didn't would have been much worse. I guess you could say the father had some more mental maturing to do.
I had a much easier time watching & reading Shigi’s abuse than Endeavor’s family. Endeavor’s “redemption” shit is so horribly written & it’s just plain disrespectful to people who have suffered from abusive people. They literally blame the victims of his abuse & the general public doesn’t even care. It’s so disgusting tbh
I feel you, I am still working through the trauma that my parents inflicted on me. But I'm a little confused - I might be forgetting something but I seriously don't remember a single moment where the show makes a clear statement that what Endeavor did is the victims' fault. Can you name me any specific scenes?
Interesting thing I read in a thread:
Every member of Shigaraki's family died in the way they lived, or treated him:
-the dog died as an emotional support lovingly in his arms
-Hana died with her back turned to him looking out for her parents in fear
-the mother died while trying to comfort and save shigaraki
-the grandparents died while standing by watching from the sidelines without getting involved
-the father died while trying to solve the problem with violence
Also, the fact that Tenko actively kills his dad.
Her mother died trying to reach out but it's too late
Damn, that's astute. I didn't even realize that until now.
and now we know:
Its even worse than this with manga context...
It’s honestly crazy to think that Shigaraki is basically a dark reflection of Midoriya. They both had somewhat similar childhoods and upbringings.
Nah Number 6 from MHA Vigilantes is more of a twisted version of Izuku
I guess the difference is that Deku's dad isn't abusive

This arc is supposed to take place before class a vs b
Shigaraki’s hand was half cut of (as in he lost two fingers) in this fight
This arc is supposed to be narrated by spinner (and it does wonders for his characterization)
Not something that was cut out but I would also like to point out that most if not all characters can be pointed out on how their quirks influenced their personalities (toga is the best example ofc) however shigaraki is a VERY good example of this, as he has shown the “itch” to literally destroy everything that pisses him off to a unnatural degree
I’m probably forgetting but if anyone has more please reply here and I will edit it in the list, and also please like this so it’s easier to see
More things that I remember being cut,
Giran's interrogation was actually shown and he was just insulting the liberation army pretty much, sure it was summarized in MVA episode 1 but I think seeing it in the moment would make him more underrated, less of a damsel in distress.
A bit of characterization from Skeptic talking to Giran in MVA episode 3
That's all I remember now
@@lov1na716 i REALLY wish I knew, because this is my favorite arc in the manga and they kinda ruined it
This gotta be one of the most metal episodes in MHA
So I’m going to defend another bit of change from MVA and that’s the censoring. The truth is Shigaraki decays everyone like his family and Aizawa’s elbow all the way back in season 1. But no mind no matter how sadistic you are can handle that level of gore and he blots it out and he and we see a Medusa effect of sorts making things look like stone and turning into powder. And I think that’s clever. (Also unlike season 4, season 5 was in an earlier time slot on tv so it was a bit more censored for kids.)
This is still among the most traumatizing episodes of MHA. And now it’s going to be your SECOND nightmare of a puppy puddle from Anime. Ugh.
Wait, you're telling me MHA was shown to kids??
This episode goes into extremely painful, and I do mean painful, detail on just how excruciating it would be to die to Decay.
Shiggy's father is Kota but grown up and had no Deku
@@draykohunter6805 ?
@@draykohunter6805 :D Ah I see
Man, Alicia truly has lost it huh? I guess all the emotional damage that FMA caused her 😞Also, if I remember correctly, there used to be someone who tried to help someone but the person that they helped sued them instead, and that's why some people are afraid to do anything to help.
This was a great origin story for Shiggy. It was really tragic and elevated him further as a character
One of the reasons Shigaraki is and will always be my favorite, ngl I'm happy you cried for him, thank you (Sorry if this is a weird ass comment)
We've all been the child that enjoyed crushing an ant hill.
no shiting on you for liking shigy, becus even i love his charecter, but i had a very diferent reaction to his back story, becus its so humman, you cant realy blame shigy, you cant blame his sister becus thers just kids, it just feel sad to see a broken house going to point of absolute tragedy, the one with the most respossibylyty in the story is his dad, but you also see him being a produc of his trauma, if we don blame shigy for what his doing as a yough adult becus of his trama, if feel wrong to just blame the dad too, for me its just a sad story with no happy end in sight, that why i just wana hug shigy...but he would erasse me xD
3:06 yeah that's the reason he stayed at home. Nooo other reason at all
To be fair they tip toe around the discrimination in the anime. In the manga there is a whole ass klan group, so it’s a lot more prevalent
This episode never fails to make me cry, fuuuuuck
Shigaraki’s face at the end is haunting.
This was one of my favorites episodes of the whole show. I love the voice acting, the music, everything was great there at the end.
It's wild how this show has me rooting for the League of Villians
Crumbly boy origin, he scratch.
Makes me wonder did no one report the sudden destruction of a rich persons house
Considering how Dabi looks, I would expect him to specifically NOT know a good plastic surgeon. That guy looks like he's been put together by someone in their garage with scraps and tools meant to repair cars or appliances, not a professional doctor...
Hey Alicia! Have you watched Archer at all? I feel like you’d appreciate the “phrasing” humor
It is very tragic to see shigraki backstory i feel sorry for him in my opinion.
What are your thoughts on shigraki backstory everyone?
I can only say that I've seen some fanart of what if All Might adopted and raised him and the thought makes me cry every single day
The manga was bloodier.
This backstory i swear felt like the darkest thing this show has shown when i first saw this
shiggy's backstory always makes me cry
So Deku just finished fighting a villain who can kill people with a touch (Overhaul) and Shigaraki is fighting someone who uses a % based strength power.
So something i want to bring up. Alicia people dont get quirks if they havent manifested by the age of 4. Thats the rule shigaraki was 5 meaning he was quirkless as well. Which ultimately means his quirk isnt his own
At 22:33 your gonna eat those words when your children in mha die by his hands 🤷🏾♂️
lol I came to this from your channel and your last like 4-5 vids all have your shocked/horrified face on them.
Counterpoint, Dabi CAN"T know a good plastic surgeon since he's still staple face and missing skin over most of his body. If he did know a good one, he could probably also find someone to do skin grafts.
Spinner deserves no sympathy..He played League
Difference between Deku and Shigaraki:
- Deku's dad isn't shown (yet)
- Shigaraki Tomura's (Tenko Shimura) dad is shown
Always love the fight between LoV leader shiggy and doofenshmirtz evil incorporated
Oh boy I can't wait to see if they did my favourite manga pannel justice in the anime!
that bystander comment bout to get returned to
I’m glad you brought up the bystander affect because it really is one of the most annoying and despicable things to do when someone else is hurting in public. It is a bs thing about society and it still happens a lot.
Did Alicia not recognize the hero-grandma in the picture?
11:45 FRRRR
This video had some real "kill the abusers... In minecraft!"-energy. Go get 'em Shiggy! XD
SHIGARAKI'S GRANDMA WAS ALL MIGHT'S TEACHER!!!!
yeah? all for one said that back during his fight with all might.
@@Yal_Ratholi mean yes but this is the confirmation. Is all for one after all you can't trust his word
Don't react to "Just look my way" from Helluva Boss just yet. See it after S2 E6
PHRASING!? Are we not doing Phrasing anymore?!
Who the fuck is Hannah? Lol
Oh the backstory that mad me feel all kimds of things made me love Shigaraki more as a character but i hate they skipped so much of this arc in the manga this arc was suppose to be the first arc this season after those battles with the students
🎉
I click on the video and the first thing I see are jiggle effects
Day 109 of asking Alicia to play Nier:Automata!!
Is that a black anime girl?
*What is bro yapping*
@@xenoemblem7 Me when my troglodyte brain can’t comprehend the english language
I feel you, I am still working through the trauma that my parents inflicted on me. But I'm a little confused - I might be forgetting something but I seriously don't remember a single moment where the show makes a clear statement that what Endeavor did is the victims' fault. Can you name me any specific scenes?
@@j-starchaser I didn’t even watch any Endeavor family scenes in the show. I was referring to the manga. I should’ve made that more clear
@@chainzswp1ss ahh ok! I haven't read any of it, so I guess this discussion is kinda pointless :) Hope you're doing alright!
