- The clutch started slipping on the Vivaro so we changed it, but it was a LOT worse than we first thought.
Here is how we did it.

I have to warn you that I have no formal automotive training, and have just learned by breaking stuff. If you can learn anything from my mistakes then great, but you do so at your own risk!
Just to let you know for future, I changed my gearbox on the same van due to the whining issue in 5th and 6th and I managed to do it without removing any front end just dropped the gearbox mount and gave me enough room to get all the bolts out, would save you alot of time
Thanks 👍
I can do these in and out in about 2.5 hours. No front end off no subframe off and you do it all from the bottom. First jack it up or put it on a ramp, remove wheels and drive shaft nuts and lower BJ's. Unclip sensor wiring and brake hoses so don't get pulled then either jack or tranny stand under the engine undo the 1 16mm nut in the engine bay for the gearbox mount ( the only thing done in engine bay ! ) undo it and lower box down. All bolts can be seen and removed and gear cables and wiring the whole lot all from underneath. Easy. Book time is 10 to 12 hours. Nice job to do when you know the trick. Hope this helps some people
@daleevans9029 how much does that cost ?
I'm a joiner but I did a gear box first time 8 hours with all front end off the clutch went I did it in 5 hours but I'm not mechanic but as a joiner I was happy with that and saved 500 pluss pound for a mechanic
New a guy who ran a fleet of traffic's vivaros etc. Had various trouble with gearboxes. Finally came across mechanic who had done a lot of work on these vans. He used the same oil in the gearbox as he used for the engine. Never had a problem after that. Changed the oil regularly.
If it worked for them, it worked for them. I wouldn't recommend that to anyone though.
Can remember years ago changing the clutch on my Ford Corsair. My Uncles garage had a pit so access was fine until all the bolts were out and I was crouched in this pit with the gearbox across my shoulders while my mate (?) was up top laughing and saying how are we going to get it out of the pit.
🤣 nice one 👌
Wow that was amazing I’ve got a Renault traffic that’s got a clutch problem broke down two days ago waiting for someone to have a look at my clutch now. I know how difficult it is and I’m a carpenter by trade. What a brilliant video. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge wish I live near you cheers😊
Thanks, no problems 👍. Good luck getting it sorted out 🤞.
I'm a joiner and did this myself its a pain to do if it's your first as there tricksof the trade to do it easier

Well done 👍🏻 I’ve just replaced all injectors on mine, had to have head off to do it, decided to take engine out, total PITA. Can’t imagine doing box only.
My issue is getting a decent bleed on the clutch. CSC are the worst.
Thanks, yes the CSC is a bit of a pain. Good job sorting it out 👌.
for anyone else doing this, to refit the box easier, remover lower most beam...then refit main crash beam ( a couple of bolts will be fine)...then use a scaffolding bar and a bit of chain to lever the box in off the main crash beam....makes life easier
Thanks 👍
burnt out gearbox my arse.... took mine out and replaced all the bearings and shells inside cost me 100 quid. also done mine on the floor outside on a cold december. it was a right mission to get out and worse to get back in.... Well done top job....
Thanks, where did you get the parts from?
Cheers Larcs 👍
We done mate don’t think I would have tackled it at our age would have no problem when I was younger
Thanks, I'm not getting any younger 🤣
I feel your pain, would love a vivaro/traffic. Top end of fifty, the brain says yes but the body says no at doing stuff like this anymore. Last few times I have got a bloke in to do things like this. However dont get the same satisfaction as doing it myself......
Thanks. I agree, it was a bit tough but the sense of achievement when I worked was great 👍
Did you pressure bleed this from the header tank downwards to the bleed nipple? When I did this with an Eezibleed I bled out/wasted at least a litre of fluid trying to get all the air out, but I still don't think it's right because it's difficult to get it into second gear
Yes I used a pressure bleeder, I dribbled some brake fluid down the plastic pipe to the CSC before I connected it. I don't know if that made any difference? I remember it being a pain to do.
Do you know if you had to remove the starter motor in the end? Don't think anyone else does
Yep, I had to remove it👍
Forgot to say there are cheap mechanical doofers you attach to the top of the gearbox that keep the gear change levers/ linkages in a tighter format ?
Thanks, I've got one of those fitted 👍
Hi larcs it might have been a good idea if you had the van a bit higher to give you more space
Yes, I wanted it higher but couldn't go much higher because of the height of the workshop roof .
When I do these sorts of jobs I'm always covered in oil, everyone else looks so clean after
I get covered too
Hi mate what was the cost of the gearbox overhaul ? Thanks George
Just under £1k
Good job 😊
It's not easy doing alone on the floor
Thanks, it was a bit tough but we got there 👍
I’m just about to buy a 2007 2L CDTI Vivaro LWB crew bus for £3800 with 156k on the clock, all I’m hearing about the older Vivaro is bad stuff, injectors, gear box and loads of other stuff. I know there’s about 23000 Vivaros on the road in the UK so there’s gonna be a percentage that play up but would you buy another one or has it really been one problem after another! ( I might just buy an older 4x4 the way I’m feeling!) thanks! ( love the videos btw!)
Yes, they have gearbox and injector issues, but don't many vans with higher mileage? Especially injector issues, the injectors are the same as any other except they can get rusted in. Gearboxes are maybe more common than some others, but other vans have different issues, like rust etc. There is no definitive answer, sorry. Good luck finding something that suits your needs 🤞.
Cheers Larcs 👍
My Haynes manual says the wheel bolts are 120 not 105
Thanks 👍
44:56 there .... see how dirty the EGR housing is.. you should clean tha accordeon pipe there... it's really hard to put back... could be where it leak oil back there... you can see it at 44,58.. 47:20 Do the timing chaine now, the back engine mount on the gear box is on.. time to do the timing chaine... Demain!!
Thanks, mine has a timing belt not a chain.
Thought you don't do chains unless they make a noise? They're meant to last forever lol
@@saltylips9965 👍
It could cost you more for another van and the clutch or gear box could go on that
@@terenceoakes4244 Indeed 👍
Full respect!!
Thanks 👍
yeah that's a coolant preheater
Thanks 👍
Thanks, yes very true.
it happened on my vivaro cost me £800 for recon box & new clutch + £500 for fitting it
👍
hello. may I know where did you buy ? I have gearbox issues in my opel vivaro and the garage askin 6K to repair it
At what point did you wish you had removed the engine.
Pretty much as soon as I slid the gearbox back underneath the van 🤣.
@@LarcsWorkshop sometimes more work makes it easier
@@paulwilkinson6608 So true 👍
Very good pain in the arse though
Thanks, yes it was.
Think my clutch has gone does anyone know how much id get charged to have it done or do i just do it myself. Yes ive done a few clutches over the years dont worry😂
Well the parts will cost £175 ish, as for labour, I'm sorry I don't know.
@LarcsWorkshop thank you. Bit skint at the moment so looks like I'll have to do it myself outside on the road 😂 it's definitely going to rain a lot
@@c4r5on88 . Good luck sorting it out 🤞
@LarcsWorkshop thank you much appreciated 🙏
@@c4r5on88 👍
Oh no!
Thanks Fred, we got it sorted eventually 👍.
@@LarcsWorkshop not the easiest job.
@@frednetherlands887 Yep, I agree. I wouldn't rush into doing it again.
Thanks Oscar, it's better now 👍
