  • The Medieval European Longsword by Cloudhammer Steelworks is a competition-cutting capable sword tested at Queen's Gambit 2023 as the loan sword of the event, which eventually assisted the gold medalist to win the laurel.
    Join Vic and Jon of Unsheathed Sword Reviews ( / @unsheathedswordreviews ) and I in this review of this model with revised stats, sent to me by John Kang of RVA Katana--the exclusive distributor of Cloudhammer Steelworks. I intentionally kept a lot of behind-the-scene footage in this review to maintain a kind of bro-ey feeling to it, as we had so much fun with this sword among many other when we filmed several reviews and a live stream over a weekend at Vic's place in Seattle. It certainly carries a certain nostalgic value now after Vic moved house, and we will be able to see new videos filmed at a new location.

    Another awesome video Kane, hope your recovery is coming along well and you get ta swing blades around again soon.
    Hoping Cloudhammer continue their foray into European blades as Walde expressed, would love some tough as nails cutters.

      Thank you. It's been two months, and I'm slowly recovering. The progress is going well but I'm being absolutely cautious this time. Cloudhammer has released a few new models with more historical proportions, dimensions and features. Check them out, link in the description of my video.

    Very cool. I hope they continue to expand their European range with more typical designs, especially types with fullers.

      I would lose it if they put out some type XVIII's and some type XX's, especially XVIIIc and XXa.

      @@FortuneFavoursTheBold I've pre-ordered both already, thanks. 😄 Now I'm hoping for something more like Albion's Ljubljana next. Some early or high medieval swords wouldn't hurt either.

    Great video! That sword seems pretty cool. I know what you mean about trying not to hit the cutting stand. For a very long time I just used cardboard boxes but quite frankly that was unsafe and unstable even if it was fun. So recently I built myself to wooden cutting stands out of scrap what I had laying around... They're not pretty LOL... That being said I made the tops as narrow as possible with a very thin wood that was cut from broken privacy fence wooden slats. I made them just wide enough to support various bottles and jugs though I do need to fix one of the stands the top is tilted a bit and I use such thing would that way if I did for some reason hit the cutting stand itself will be a lot less likely to damage any of my blades.. that and I don't cut taTami Mats so I didn't need the wooden Spike thingy and I think one of the least expensive cutting stands I saw was I believe around $80 and it still had the wooden spiky thing... And I'm notoriously frugal so my blind stubborn self said I can build one myself watch this... But anyways yeah I'm always worried about damaging my swords using the new wooden stands by the same time I think it's making me better at taking my time and trying to be more accurate. The stands I have also two different heights not sure which one I prefer yet.

      I just use a corner shelf bought on Amazon and cut an insulation foam board into 4 pieces and stack them on top of the shelf as padding. The boards are rigid so they are pretty stable, but won't damage the blade by scratching or bending it, if you accidentally cleave into the foam board. It's also expendable. You can always spend a few bucks at HomeDepot to get a new board and place them on top of the shelf as replacement.

    • @Blindy_Sama
      @Blindy_Sama День назад +3

      That is also an excellent idea. I never thought to use insulation boards. I will have to keep that one in mind perhaps put them on the top of my cutting stands or possibly replace the small platform with them I can probably get quite a few little platforms made from one insulation board I'm going to remember that. I just happen to be using the junkyard scrap what I had laying around and quite frankly I needed a project or two at the time LOL. I also want to see if I could do it with limited tools and being mostly blind . I mean I'm definitely no Carpenter but it's been a while since I tried to actually build something. Anyways, keep up the awesome work and thanks for the brilliant idea.

      Using a bigger platform works better. So the targets don't tend to fall off easily, and you get multiple cuts out of it. And if it still falls off with such tolerance, it tells either your technique or the sword has something particularly wrong.

    • @Blindy_Sama
      @Blindy_Sama День назад +2

      @@FortuneFavoursTheBold so for the platform I have isn't too small I was able to get multiple cuts on a gallon jug using the kingfisher I'm going to try it again soon with some different swords but when I use the gladius machete the other day couldn't really get multiple cuts. Trial and error and improvement is the name of the game. Good thing is putting a slightly bigger platform if I needed to would be a very easy fix. I will say I hope that in the future when I revisit the kingfisher I can get some good footage of me doing multiple cuts on one target it is super satisfying.

      Yes most Cold Steel machetes have very rough edges, and they don't handle well enough to generate enough speed to compensate that. Better hone the edges a bit more before practice cutting.

    Great showing. Gotta hand it to Cloudhammer for their blade profiles. Can hear it in the cuts. Sounds like my diamond profile Han Jian, though some of that might be your sharpening. While I disagree with rva's policies as a company (selling known defects from other companies etc) Cloudhammer smiths are on point with their straight blades. Sx105v was my fav of their steels tested. Good all-rounder

    • @FortuneFavoursTheBold
      @FortuneFavoursTheBold  17 часов назад +2

      Indeed. Without a lot of profile taper and a relatively slender blade, it sure looks a bit like a long bladed jian. And Han Dynasty jian are often long and have a bit more profile taper than the later period jian but lesser degrees than late medieval European swords.

      @@FortuneFavoursTheBold Thanks for the info, that's a cool observation. Was also meaning the fine profile of the diamond itself. Imo makes a huge difference to have only slight "niku" to an aggressive diamond. Was cool to see you cutting with the Unsheathed family

      Yeah blades with diamond cross section without much niku can be excellent cutters! It was so much fun with stay a weekend with the Unsheathed family.
