The saga of our Qi Ji versus the bush and its savior daddy Wang has turned into a sitcom. Clearly our beloved little miracle didn’t like the unfortunate bush in its original location. Probably because it was blocking his tumbling and rolling route. As for the tree with the love scars from Qi Ji, the fact that he was able
to climb it despite the plastic guard showed how methodical and smart he is. He figured out, it seemed, to use the metal poles to climb the tree. I hope the bush will find a friendlier place somewhere else to grow and thrive. Thank you daddy Wang and nanny Lang for handling our Qi Ji’s antics with love, patience and understanding. Thank you to those filming and posting the “shows” starring our Qi Ji. ❤️🐼

And now all can understand why XQJ was so loved back in the US. He is a smarty pants, no doubt about that. An outdoor camera with night version may be hilarious to watch him in action.

We always said he was a very smart panda. Did he have a slight grin on his face when he walked down to the no longer there bush site. Little mischievous panda. He looks pleased. I guess he decided what goes in his yard and what he will climb. Thanks for sharing and for the English subtitles. Thanks to the videographer. Thanks to his ever patient and caring nannies.

I wish they had a 24 hour cam so we could catch him in the act. I am very curious how he balanced on the bar? He was always an actrobat in his former home 🏡 in SNZ!❤️

@user-sn6sd7tj6z I was wishing the same thing. The fact that he figured out how to get what he needed to climb is incredible. Add in his acrobatics, it would be so much fun to watch

What a smart boy Qi Ji is... And determined. It took a few tries to get his message across about the unwanted bush, but he kept at it... And his care team finally decided, "You win!" The question of how he got above the plastic guard to attack the tree seems to be answered... Though his care team still needs decide how to keep that from happening. I look forward to seeing his latest videos each morning... Not just because I love him, but also to see what new mischief has occurred overnight!

Thanks so much for your daily updates and the English captions. Even though I understand Chinese, English is usually much better for me. XQJ is so handsome. I hope Fubao will finish her quarantine soon. ❤

Why do you suppose he disliked that particular shrub? Thank you care team for finding another place to plant it❤❤❤

Where ever daddy Wang plant that bush, he should place a sign with the inscription: "Xiao Qi Ji's unwanted bush." When I visit the zoo, I would like to see how the bush is doing. XQJ made this bush famous, so it should have some kind of recognition. 🐼🌳

Wish Cheej would pull up the bush in front of his gate…we’d love to see him inside more clearly. Regarding that tree, they might as well take the guard down and let him climb !

Before the resourceful beautiful Meng Lan’s famous escape there was Tian Tian’s over 20 years ago.
“apparently TT climbed into a ditch, lifted a wooden floodgate with his paws, and crawled out through a circular water channel. He was just strolling along a path in the complex when a surprised Wolong employee happened upon him. He's very clever. None of the other pandas have ever escaped from there, and he took one look and saw how he could do it," said Qu Zufeng, the young keeper responsible for caring for Tian Tian and Mei Xiang”. (Excerpt from article)
.… so XQJ showed his inherited intelligence by cleverly moving a bar to aid his climbing a tree. Smart boy! Brilliant dad Tian Tian!

Oh wow! Awesome! I didn't know about Tian's IQ (he's such a laid back, goofy guy), but I know Mei is really smart (putting the treat feeder hole directly to her mouth as to not waste time!). MengLan is Mei's great nephew, so super intelligence is definitely a family trait! 🤓😊❤🐼

Right! I adore the laid back Mr. Tian Tian.
Another quote from Wolong when this remarkable couple were cubs: From article written in 2000.
“Tian Tian is 3 years old, and is more agile and active than Mei Xiang. They're the two best, and Wolong was unwilling to give them up at first," said Lu Xiaoping, the Chinese coordinator for the American Zoo”. Tian and Mei Xiang are the healthiest, smartest and most active of their generation of cubs”. --the mischievous male Tian Tian (t-YEN, t-YEN, which means "more and more") and the excitable female Mei Xiang.”
You can see how XQJ has traits from both noble parents!

@swissotto1. Amazing anecdotes on Tian Tian Houdini and his and Mei Xiang’s superlative pedigrees. They definitely passed on those dominant genes to XQJ. Thank you.

You are quite welcome. I happened upon this article in the Washington Post written in 2000 and it was quite a revelation to me. I knew I needed to pass it on to fellow DC panda fans. I love hearing about the different personalities and traits that make each one unique.

@@annieqing He loved his frozen treats at The Smithsonian. The keepers also made sure that if he and his parents didn't like the bamboo they would exchange it out. I know it will take time for him to adjust to his new home but he really loved playing at The Smithsonian. He never tore up anything when he was at the zoo.

With all due respect, this all seems to be a cute story, but I have to ask, why wasn't his yard prepared appropriately long before he was transferred to Chengdu? It's a basic need for pandas to have strong mature trees to climb, which will also provide shade for them. Now, the keepers are struggling to fix everything, which seems to be a losing battle for them. They're trying so hard to accommodate his needs, and I truly appreciate their efforts. I'm just disappointed that it's taken so long for XQJ to become adjusted and to feel comfortable. However, it seems that our Cheej is speaking for himself, without words. He's so smart and confident in himself. I'm so proud of him and love him so very much.❤🥲

As much as I care for Cheeji, I have to disagree with you.
I believe they needed to make sure cheeji is good and stable.
As you may know, cheeji did have few rough months after arriving in China.
I put trust in caretakers as they plan accordingly.
P.S. cheeji not in cheng du, cheeji in shenshuping.

Everyone who has followed XQJ's birth until his move to China, knows he loved his frozen fruities so I am not sure why people are saying he didn't like his frozen "ice cube". The whole family loved them. I know it's going to take a while for XQJ to adjust to his new surroundings and enrichments but if I was his keeper I would try to find the toys that he loved the most when he was in the U.S. and if people really want him to put on a show, if they find that toy that was blue and looked like a hotdog shaped item, he loved that so much and would take that all over his yard and climb on his hammock with it. I wish there was a fund where XQJ fans could donate money to buy him toys because I know a lot of fans would donate for this cause.

What is the further story of the bush? XQJ doesn't like it , maybe because he can't climb up? It's funny, for Mr. Wang too...❤❤❤❤❤😂😂😂
