    I installed BST CF wheels on my 2012 BMW K1600GT 5 years ago. And I've put 55,000 miles on them with no issues. I swear by them. If you're a novice rider and/or just touring you won't notice a much of a difference. But, if you're a really aggressive rider they're hard to beat. My GT has over 100,000 miles on it. I tell all that there are 2 things you can modify on a GT to significantly increase the performance; e.g. Carbon Fiber Wheels and custom built shocks (i run Wilbers).

      Hi, I have a vfr1200f with wilbers shock to, and ohlins springs, k-tech piston valves on fork. Is the money I invest on the bike. Next step is a lithium battery and maybe CF wheels... I confess CF wheels I have a little fear if broken...

    Great video, Abhi! Well edited, entertaining and, most important, quite informative. I had no problem in seating around for 18 minutes watching it! :-) I agree with you that, certainly, carbon wheels will be the next part to be offered by manufacturers - and it won't stop there, the same will happen with frames, handlebars and other parts. Having said that, I'm a bit biased about the subject as I'm a mechanical engineer and my master's thesis was on the use of composite materials for structural elements in vehicles... (unfortunately I didn't finish the thesis as I got a job offer in another country, and I chose that).
    PS: "You need to ride the bike, and not the other way around" is one of the most meaningful advices ever.

    Nice video!
    For pricing, some bicycle carbon wheels are more expensive than those of motorcycle ones considering that they're using less materials, and that to me is more abusrd.😅

      I have an Italian bicycle called Basso
      It’s fully carbon except the wheels.
      I do have a friend in Birmingham U.K. , he has an ex your de France bike
      And that’s an expensive piece of kit

    Cracking vid. I run carbon rims on my road bike and not currently on my “track bike”. It has forged Ali rims but tbh, I’ll prob swap them over lol. Your point about why cf rims are not used in race series is correct. That info come form some race directors around the paddocks of the world too.

      Ben Varley absolutely mate, honestly there’s nothing wrong with carbons on the road . I have heard of more dented aluminium wheels than cracked carbons from potholes. I just made this video because people have such old school stigma about carbons that its very tough to change the mindset now. Just doing my bit and flying the flag for carbons . Lol ... I cannot wait to see your RF fully ready for track

      @@daystate123 yes, absolutely, if there is an issue with the carbon wheel and left unchecked then definitely it can disintegrate or even explode.
      I get my carbon wheels especially X rayed after every season.
      These days the carbons are less fragile though

    So put track tires on CF wheels and put road tires on your stock wheels as an everyday rider with occasional track days. Got it, thank you so much for this video keep up the in depth info.

    If you spin both carbon and alloy wheels on an axle between your hands and turn the wheel,you'll feel the difference easily, spin them on a stand using a finger will show the force needed to start them moving. Big difference that you also feel on a bike.

    Thanks for the good video and putting in the time. I had a question that wasn't answered in the video. Do carbon rims have a specific life due to the resin used or because of the exposure to the environment (sun, wind, etc.)? I do recall you said that they are a set it and forget it investment, but was told by the dealer that their experience is that carbon rims needed to be replaced every so many years do to the deterioration of the carbon over time. Wanted to get your experience and answer to that.

      Thank you for the kind words and a really nicely worded question.
      I recently spoke to a carbon repair company who deal with carbon repairs on wheels and LeMan lmp2 cars, they mentioned that there is no life span issues but a regular scan or check of the wheels for hairline issues is recommended and that should be done either after an incident or every 2 years. I have been running my carbons since 2018
      So 5 years of plenty of use
      And no issues at all
      I have done plenty of Trackdays and relentless endurance racing , no issues . I don’t use them on roads as it’s a track bike . I recently had my wheels scanned and no issues were found

    Hi, great video!. Can you tell if carbon wheels are sensetive to low temperatures? I mean where I store the bike.

      That’s a very good question, no they aren’t . I have very low temperature in my garage here in U.K.
      And I store it there since 2017
      No issues at all
      No delaminating of the lacquer even lol

      thank you very much , I have been using very high temp tyre warmers on my BST carbon wheels now for 4 years , not even the lamination layer or gloss layer on the carbons has suffering , there is absolutely no issue with using warmers on carbon wheels... remember carbon is heated to a decent temperature when they are made , so no issues , it can sustain high temps

    Just for a little more clarity.
    The majority of your bike including the rider is sprung weight. that is you and the bouncing up and down on the bikes suspension springs.
    Everything, the other side of the spring is unsprung.
    The list of unsprung things includes wheels, tyres, swinging arm, calipers, rear sprocket, et cetera.

    Yes Ahbi, yh Ive used carbon Dymags for racing on me R1 for 3 years now, the weight is better and yes, a lot less centrifugal forces, turns in like a dream boat, there’s not really a downside apart from the price lol... I have 2 race bikes, wet bike and dry bike on carbon, and wow when I swap from wet to dry u really can notice it, some thing u didn’t mention as such, the effort and energy needed to turn a bike is halved, when racing, 15 hard laps can be a killer on me std wheel bike but 15 laps on the carbon feels like 10 laps, so you save loads of energy and can concentrate better 👌 it’s a yes from me 👍🏁 cheers mate 🤩

      Absolutely lovely point there mate, yes I didn’t mention about the energy level . Well picked up . You can tell I haven’t done more than 10 laps in a session on a track day lol ... otherwise I would have mentioned stuff like that .     The next thing to try would be carbon rims with Kevlar spokes to use the flexibility and the natural damping of Kevlar to help the suspension in the corners to absorb the bumps when the bike is leaning.

    So far the this is the most relevant video on RUclips regarding carbon wheels.
    I have a zx10r with carbon wheels. Gen 4 model.
    I occasionally road ride and rarely ride on track at the moment.
    I have the Oem wheels. I selected to keep the carbon wheels on the bike and fitted new tires.
    Suspension has been changed as well. Updated internals on forks and upgraded adjusters, shock spring upgraded.
    The OEM rear is a 190. This has been changed to a 200. The bike turns in almost telepathically with this section width. Even sometimes with a bit of oversteer in fact.
    Sure, I do think of potholes and road surfaces a bit more...... But I do not over stress it too much.
    The manufacturer of the wheels on my bike has recently posted about a set of wheels with over 120 000 kms on them - road kms by the way.
    My bike has many other go faster bits as well, the front can get a bit light, a dab of rear brake or a tempered right wrist does help - an extra click or two on the damper also gives a it more of a safety net.

      Wow, thanks Brandon for such a detailed reply and I appreciate the nice words too about the video . I am a big fan of the zx10r especially the winter edition livery in 2016 with the red endurance head on the motor , I think that was a superb bike , only limited edition and single seat but it was so ahead of other bikes in terms of practical upgrades plus up and down blipper. You bike seems to be lovely too and with carbons I can totally understand how well that thing is probably handling .

      To be fair, this is the first Kawasaki I have owned.
      I was very fortunate to pick this specific bike up for a really great deal and with very low mileage on it as well.
      I use it as a means of stress relief and a passion for riding. The city I reside in also has some amazing roads to ride.
      In the past I have owned various brands of bikes from most manufacturers. I am considering the RSV4 in the future as well - hence how I have come across your channel.
      On the subject of carbon wheels, what most do not understand is that it is a functional upgrade that dynamically changes more than just one aspect of your bike.
      Where an exhaust will impact some performance and the sound for instance. Carbon wheels will impact acceleration, braking, turn in, handling and weight.
      It is indeed true that earlier carbon wheels did have some failures that were well documented, however these failures are less common these days and are in limited number.
      Something I was made aware of recently is that one of other reasons why carbon wheels are not used in racing classes is due to cost. This seems fair considering how many times tires are changed in a race weekend excluding the possibility of an accident or two in the same weekend.

      It’s a stunning bike
      I have 3 Mates who actually own a zx10R and the RSV4
      they love both the bikes for different reasons
      And yes for sure carbons do increase cost in racing
      I was speaking to a British super bike rider in may this year and he mentioned the cost factor as alminimum wheels can be re shaped to perfection but if carbon gets destroyed then it’s a brand new wheel which is an added cost to the team

      Might we ask what is the manufacturer of the wheels? Considering this but making sure the rims are reliabile under road use is extremely important for me

      Theres a few sets that have over 140 000 kms of road use already.
      No need to be concerned about longevity.
      I would advise just being mindful of potholes and so on.
      A look over and inspection before or after a wash is also advised.
      Other than that, fit them, maybe make a few suspension adjustments with the change......and enjoy.

    Great video, if I'd got £2000 that I had to spend on bike related stuff I'd probably book a couple of euro trackdays and get some instruction, I think that will improve track times way more than lighter wheels. But if I was given some wheels they'd be straight on the bike lol

      @@averagebiker Just looked at the price and they come out at around 3 and a half grand for my bike, with 10 spokes. BIG investment. But they would look so good! Already have loads of carbon on her. Spent way too much already though. Just got the whole suspension changed and that was over 2 grand. Bikes are just money pits.

    I do not race or even do track days (overwhelms me thinking how far away and all the trouble and expense I wish I was close to a track) I ride the twisties I do NOT "race" on these public roads but I do ride as fast as I feel comfortable doing so and I leave quite a margin for safety . I never try to pass other riders in the heat of passion type thing and I also never attempt to block anyone from passing me in fact the moment I notice anyone has comes up on my rear If I cant simply up the pace well within my confort range I will always simply let me by! I slow a fraction and literally wave them by and consider it a wondrful thing as now I have someone to chase! Having said all that I DO love the chase! And I though I do not enjoy being left in the dust? It is just life Que Sara ya know? Actually my favorite thing is to be included in a group of riders on an agreed upon route usually each having a grasp on where we individually belong in the order to begin with ...I confess I do not enjoy ever being the tail end lol mid pack for me is wonderful! Like I say it is never a race .....But if there are improvements that will make it easier for me maintain a quicker pace at the same comfort level I already insist on? Whether lighter wheels better suspension better tires etc I am IN.... Are lighter wheels likely to make a difference for my use? Even if it is just noticably more enjoyable! Or just a waste in my case?

      First of all I must say that you have a very sensible approach to riding and I admire your patience of the roads.
      Lighter wheels will definitely improve the ease of turn-ins and ease of acceleration and braking and leads to effortless riding. So technically yes, it will definitely benefit you for sure … but only buy carbon wheels if you have spare money :)

    Composite doesn't necessarily crush into small pieces. The F1 cars use high Young modulus fibers (brittle fibers) to dissipate a maximum of energy during the impact. The proper fibers for wheels would be the high-tenacity ones (like the one used for the pilot protection cell) that will resist an impact or repeated fatigue cycles while being more flexible. You can even put a Kevlar layer in it to prevent any sheer of the wheel and a natural damping of the vibrations.

      @@ChasingTenths And yes I agree that lighter wheels are a great investment to reduce the linear and rotational inertia during acceleration or breaking, it's also unsprung weight so it's easier for the suspension to keep the tire in contact with the road and it reduces the gyroscopic effect making the bike more agile in corners while reducing the chance of steering wobbles.

      So formula one is using composite material in multiple use cases both structures and crash cells with different properties as appropriate. Since we don't have crash cells on motorcycles but we do have wheels in common it's important to understand that composite materials are suitable for structural use and the correct choice of material is not brittle. 200 bhp and 250 kg loads are well within the capability of the material with a significant margin of safety.Such composite materials are used to build commercial jet aircraft and in a safety critical industry they would not be taking any significant risk.

    I almost dropped the damn bike the 1st time a rode by friends GSXR with Carbon Dymags. There is next to no centrifugal inertia. So, when you lean the bike in it just drops. Exactly what you would want as a fast group rider on track. If you're a beginner your used to there being some resistance in the bars and you push to counter steer. It's different with all that weight gone. It will catch you out if you're not ready for it. I came really damn close to dropping that bike on the very 1st turn.

    I have BST Carbon Fiber Wheels on my Suzuki TL1000R. Besides the obvious bling factor, the BST’s transformed the bike as it handles so much better! Turn in and braking are greatly improved with the BST’s.
    For the $$ they are a great upgrade, while they may be out of reach for many they really are worth saving up and investing in them!

      I don’t buy bikes for an “investment” other than an “investment” in my soul! I buy and ride what I like not for what it’s worth is!
      When the TL was being manufactured I couldn’t afford to buy a tire for one let alone the bike. Sometimes a bike or an object or a trip is worth more than the sum of its parts! I can now afford to purchase any bike or car or home I would want to purchase…..within reason of course but then again I wouldn’t want to purchase a home that’s millions and millions as I don’t have a need nor want for something like that.
      So while I appreciate your comment, it was immature and self centered or should I say “troll-like”?

    Carbon fibre wheels are pretty high up on the list of potential first mods for my little track bike. Granted I've only gone on track for the first time this week but when the time comes that I feel I can't get any faster with how the bike is now then I might just get some, until then I'm just going to enjoy myself and gradually up the speed bit by bit

      @@ChasingTenthsmost people would probably disagree with my choice to get the absolute most out of my bike since it's just a little RC390 so with 43hp straight line speed will forever be its weakness. But after seeing a 16 year old with a R3 cup bike destroy absolutely everyone in the fastest group just to get passed in the straight showed that just because you can have a faster bike doesn't mean you'll be a faster rider

      @@ChasingTenths honestly I’m trying to replace the OEM boat anchors. I don’t ride a sports bike, far from it but I don’t see why Harley saw fit to put such heavy wheels and tires on the bikes they promote as sporty. You guys on sport bikes might lose a few pounds going to carbon from from I’ve been reading I’ll save close to 37 pounds by switching my Softail. I’m betting that’s going to make a huge change in how it rides.

      If you really ride your Harley in a bit more sporty way on canyons etc then definitely you will notice a huge difference, plus a lot of people don’t realise that lighter wheels also leads to less fatigue, better fuel economy, less wear on brake pads , less heat generated by callipers, so better braking , plus acceleration and stuff.
      And Harley are very tightly budgeted company these days , they wouldn’t choose lighter wheels , it’s just an added cost , so they go for heavier cheaper wheels . Everyone’s cost cutting these days

    I have a tuned 2020 zx10r and i push wheelies and run drag strips and also ride on the streets a lot. Which set of wheels would you suggest? BST GP TEK, Rapid Tek, or the factory RR wheels/OZ Gass / Core Moto? This is something no one has answered anywhere and i would need your help

      BST GP tek mate, I’ve had 2 sets of them since 2016 , rain and dry
      I do endurance racing and Trackdays all around Europe
      It’s a proven design tried and tested design by bst
      It’s been there a long time
      Thick spokes
      If you get them then get them with ceramic bearings
      You can’t go wrong with them

      Well, that’s a good question, I have 2 friends with carbons for Road and they have never had any issues at all because the new type of varnon wheels aren’t as brittle as it used to be 15 years ago , so they are absolutely ok for the road

      It’s less rotational mass
      And less Unsprung mass
      Definitely higher top speed
      Loads of drag racers use it

      thanks for the feedback. Will try after i have gotten both BST Mamba 7 wheels on my Z900 SE 2023. so far i only managed to install the front wheel few days ago without any issues. It justs that I have some issues installing the rear wheel as the hub bushes on both right and left side are bit too far off. Will need to modify it a bit to fit it in.

      Only the lacquer on the carbons can get damaged if the vehicle is stationary in the scorching sun for many many weeks & months but that’s a rarity on the other hand I put warmers on my tyres and heat them up to 76 degrees for the last 3 years on Trackdays non stop , and I have had no damaged from heat coming through within the tire to the wheel.
      So heat isn’t really an issue at all

      @@ChasingTenths He's specifically says sun damange because it's not the heat it's the UV from the sun. The Epoxy resin holding the sheets of carbon together are sensitive to UV, which breaks them down over time. It would be very unwise to store your bike in direct sunlight with CF rims.

      Things are definitely better than what they used to be in early prototypes or earlier production wheels .

    Great video as always... but I have it on good authority that they are brittle after a while. Thai Long had them on his Tuono (www.motorcycle.com/features/carbon-fiber-wheels-and-a-trip-to-the-moon.html#disqus_thread), and they shattered mid corner. Lots of riders have mentioned this. They will not fail gracefully like a forged alloy wheel. Lots of people have mentioned how, unless you check for a hairline facture before each ride, you're taking chances. No way I'd consider them for the road... not safe.

But I actually spoke to BST about it because in U.K. we have a track called cadwell park where we do wheelies all the time at a certain point and I spoke to BST and they said there are no concerns as the carbons are very very flexible and don’t shatter on impact .
      But I know it’s quite scary thought lol

      great question and a question many ask and I have since spoken to some real top people on this in the race paddock , its slightly long winded, complicated and dare I say political .. there's a monopoly of certain companies in the racing world who are producing amazing and perfectly lightweight metal wheels , they don't make carbons.. they want to keep it that way and especially their monopoly and not loose contracts etc etc to the carbon firms like BST and Thysenkrupp etc etc ... so the 'scare mongering' with carbon wheels in racing world is more deeper than it seems.. in Club racing in Uk many race teams run Carbons, they are also allowed in British Superbike racing, AMA and Italian superbike racing .. it's such a shame it all gets a bit complicated at world level. I guess thats how the world runs, tyre contracts are also a great example. Monopoly and Networking wins

      I understand mate, people had difference experience using different wheels but their Rotobox rim has good replaceable rim bead so if someone damages the rim on changing wheels
      It can be replaced

      GP bikes don't have it as its a huge complicated, political and Franky diabolical monopoly amongst the wheel manufacturers who are currently in WSBK or MotoGP ..     I disagree with this video. My carbon fiber wheels are terrible. I have been refused service from SEVERAL shops. Cycle Gear will not work on carbon fiber wheels. Are they faster? Probably. But unless you are racing in Moto America you probably won't notice the difference. Unlike, my quick shifter, or a good suspension or good traction control. A good traction control system is VERY noticeable on track and worth your money. Carbon fiber wheels are not worth the money and hassle! BEWARE!

      Thanks Elliot for your opinion , much appreciated. Apologies for the late response. I made the video to simply explain the science behind it. I have just completed full 1 year in endurance racing in UK and I did the biggest stints which were easily more than an hour of non stop riding at race pace without stopping and honestly , if it wasn't for the unsprung mass qualities of the wheels , I would definitely feel the fatigue in the forearms and legs etc. and would have come in to the pits sooner than the hour . However, its surprising you didn't feel benefits and even more surprising that garages refuse to deal with them , here in Uk carbons are super common in racing and all shops are happy to work with them,. thanks for sharing your experience. very interesting.
