As aging adults, 66 and 73, we no longer enjoy driving.
Ten hour trips that we used to do in one a day are now split up into two days.
We just returned from a long trip to Nashville, and used FSD for the entire trip.
Nashville traffic was heavy with 12 lanes of high speed driving, multiple entrances and exits, and cars constantly cutting me off. Adding to the stress was rain and fog.
    FSD handled it well.
One thing that changed during the trip was it used to pass as needed to keep up with my set speed. On the second day it only passed when I used the turn signal to indicate a lane change. I didn’t like this change.
In spite of the few flaws, I’m buying FSD.
The only decision is do I subscribe or buy it?
We just bought the car, a 2023 M3 rear wheel drive, 5 months ago.
    This is our first EV.
Without FSD the trip to Nashville would have been far less enjoyable due to the traffic.
FSD feels like when GPS developed into what it is today. Today, few people would want to take a trip without using GPS. The same will be true for FSD in the decades ahead.
Buy Tesla stock while it’s still affordable.
    Love your videos.
    Thanks for making them.

I have FSD 12.3.3 and driving around town it is really good. The turns are more human like, the speed selection is more natural and i hardly intervene. Most of my interventions are not needed - I need to get my confidence up. I have had FSD for 5 years. This is the first time I can really consider using it in traffic in cities. Highways have been great for years now, but even there the speed selection is better and I think it makes smoother lane changes now than on earlier version.

I've had it since 2019, never worked a day yet. I purchased full self-driving, not me taking over. By time I actually get full self-driving, the car will be probably ready for the junkyard. You should not legally be allowed to make promises such as full self-driving and sell it for $12,000. And then never deliver

Regarding the 40 mph speed limit on freeway I400, we have a "minimum speed 40 mph" sign. Tesla's FSD reads the "white rectangle" sign shape and the number 40, but fails to read the text or doesn't read it at all, which is why it sets a speed limit for the car at 40 mph.

  • @jasonhatcher5753

The speed limit changes to 40 MPH is being caused by the “MINIMUM SPEED 40MPH” signs.

Great video guys! I purchased FSD in 2019 for my 2018 M3 and have been a Beta tester since then. Kim, I also felt FSD was a lot of work to use. I'm 76 so my energy level isn't what it used to be, but I wanted to make as much of a contribution as possible to the system. I used it every single day, but V11 almost made me stop. V12 is mostly a joy to use & I'm looking forward to a rapidly improving experience. I purchased FSD because I didn't want to end up the same as so many older individuals who are so restricted because of loss of ability to drive. Many, many places don't have adequate public transportation & even when they are available, not very convenient. On V12.3.3 I still have the problem of turning into inappropriate turn-only lanes. I believe that the highway is still on V11, so the single stack is something to look forward to.
I am also very frustrated with the lack of ability to transfer FSD. As a retired teacher on a very small income I have not been able to take advantage of any of the transfer offers, because I can't just jump up & purchase a new vehicle within a short time span. As an early adopter of both a Tesla and FSD I would be happier with Tesla if they acknowledged that by allowing me to transfer it at any time.

I use it daily and have probably logged over 50k miles with it. v12.3.3 is the first version that has gotten me from point to point without having to disengage it. Don't get me wrong it will occasionally choose the incorrect lane which will cause me to correct it but I must say it has been a huge improvement. My neighbor also has it and it is the first version that he has used daily as well. In the past he would try it once a new update would hit and then immediately stop using it.

I've been using FSD for over 2.5 years. My biggest problem is the nudge problem. I normally hold the wheel lightly and it doesn't think I am. When I do hold it tigher it often goes out of FSD without me knowing because it thought I took over. And yes prior to v12, even though I used it on every trip there were many times I knew better than to let it be driving. With v12 it does every trip end-to-end without intervention (except for gates). We also got an X just over a year ago and my wife now drives the Y ... with v12 it's finally time she may starts using it. (She was very unhappy when I sold her car and made her drive the Y, she heated the regenerative braking . A few months later when she started driving her car we keep a our home up north all she did was complain about how it kept running away on her.) We're both now over 80 and it sees all around it (and we don't turn our bodies like we use to) and it reacts faster than we can. We do two 2,000 mile road trips a year and our average charging time last year was 13.5 minutes ... faster than we can shuffle to the bathroom and back.
You talked about round-abouts. We have a very busy two-lane one near our house ... with v11 I would take over as we arrived. With v12 I never worry about what it's going to do no matter how far around it's going. For over two years, my wife has driven 2 miles out of her way just to avoid it. As soon as I can get her to feel comfortable the car will drive her anywhere.

We tried it on a road trip down from Atlanta to Orlando. It was great except the speed limit signs in Ga. We have a minimum speed limit sign and then a speed limit sign. The car was constantly going from 75 to 40 and back. Wasn’t a confidence builder. Once we were in Florida it was almost perfect! They list both speeds on the same sign and FSD reads that properly. If they fix the minimum speed limit problem it would great.

I purchased FSD in 2020 and with this new version 12.3.3 it is finally very useful. I think it will be even better when they adjust the neural networks to rewrite the code for the freeway. I do think that they should make FSD in two formats. Personal use and commercial use. When he talks about how much money it is worth I’m never gonna use my car as a Robo taxi. I will only use it for personal use so the value of it is not worth the same as someone that would use it to make income. They should just have two versions of it. Also, I think that if they made it lifetime transferable one vehicle at a time I would probably pay up to 15,000 for that because I know that if I have an accident or traded in I’m not going to lose it Also if I ever rented a Tesla it would carryover to me in a rental. I do have a reservation for the cyber truck and I had checked the box for the option to get it at $6000 so I am trusting they’re going to honor that because I put my money down under those conditions. if for some reason, they don’t honor the 6000 then I will not purchase the cyber truck.

12:10 The yellow phase of a traffic light is meant for the driver to come to a safe stop when the light turns Red. „Gunning it" is a very bad habit and leads to accidents, or at the very least makes other traffic participants very uncomfortable.

I loved this video, thank you for taking the time and effort to make it! FSD's come so far from your first FSD video (the first video I viewed of your channel), and the one you put out last year.
Some of the interesting parts of this video for me:
3:20 Y'all driving around in the N ATL burbs is surreal. I drive these roads regularly.
5:32 It taking these right turn lanes appropriately without stopping. In old versions, I'd imagine it stops at the red light even though that right turn onto McFarland has right of way at all times because it has its own lane.
6:30 The confidence to proceed with the left turn despite the oncoming van having its own right of way too. It doesn't freak out like old versions, or even a person not familiar with the intersection might. Then the immediate move over to the right lane smoothly. Waiting for all of those bicyclists to cross, very naturally and not freaking them out was cool. Only thing it screwed up at Halcyon was that wacky park job. 😆
10:53 Nice U-Turn and commit despite the light turning yellow.
14:38 Caney after that three-way stop is a super tight road with practically no shoulders. I see plenty of people driving left of center while going around those bends... it looks like FSD handles it well.
15:40 You did this intersection if your first FSD video and it did terribly with it. Huge improvement. Very natural being somewhat occluded by the median.
19:25 Solid merge onto the freeway. You can imagine an all EV future where vehicles have more or less the same acceleration and one slow accelerator is not holding up the whole line of cars.
19:40 I think the reason it chooses not to complete the lane change is because of the solid white line coming in for that Kimball Bridge construction project. It didn't handle it very gracefully, but it seemed like it was more awkward than dangerous.
20:50 Waiting that late to get into the exit lane would stress me out too, especially cutting in right behind another vehicle. I do think Kim's thesis may be right though. How often do you see humans do that very thing, wait until the last moment and cut in giving no room to someone in front, behind, or both? FSD being trained on human data is a double-edged sword.
22:12 To confidently go around the truck moving left of center like that is impressive. No big deal for us humans because understand the rules have exceptions for this scenario, but for FSD, it has data showing it exceptions, but it doesn't know WHY the exception exists. Hence why the confidence impresses me.
    23:20 That park job. 🤣
25:30 It definitely saw those pedestrians headed toward the road quickly. That cautiousness is super-encouraging. As it improves over time, imagine its ability to stop for animals and children dashing into the road.
29:23 This is simultaneously frightening and super impressive. That was the right maneuver and technically very safe, but yes, all those cars in the right lane (with a yield)... that's a lot of volume to make a left in front of with confidence. I love it.
On the issue of price, I do think the $12k is absurd until it is legit FSD, sleep in the backseat style. Perhaps you guys consider the $200/mo trial on your X? It'd take 5 years of subscription before costing as much as the $12k... Do you think you'll have your current X for that long? Great video. I love watching the progress of FSD and I've not found any other ATLiens sharing their experiences with it. Thanks again for your efforts!

  • @jefferyshall

On the highway it changed back to it’s own lane because, being trained by humans it knows that although there is a solid white line to your left that a human puts on the signal early before it changes too a dashed line and it was thinking that line should have changed to a dashed line, but when it didn’t and stayed solid it knows it is not supposed to cross a solid line and went back to its lane and stayed there because it was a solid line the whole way.

Today, it allowed a car entering from a mall access lane proceed in front as we were holding at a red light, very human like, the driver waived us thanks. it hit a light about 1 second it changed from green to yellow and it proceeded through, I would have done the same. Other longer yellow it stops for. Great technology!!! I purchased my 2021 Model S back in January and enabled the monthly subscription the next day. I let it drive me down a rural road in the town that I live in and immediately cancelled because it was no where near ready. Fast forward to Easter Sunday and I get the notice of the trial when I get in the car. Like you and your husband, I was immediately apprehensive and ready to disengage at a moments notice. Fast forward a week and I let it drive me everywhere, even on these country roads. I’ve leaned the FSD is just a name and that it shines when you stay relaxed but involved. In fact, there are a few tricks I’ve found for all of the nuisance items you mentioned in the video. Like stopping short at stop signs, lane merging, and wrong speed limits. However, it is not worth $12k! Period. It’s not worth $199/mo. The pricing structure when Advanced Autopilot was available was fair for this still “supervised” essentially Beta version. Tesla is getting data that from every time I use it paid or not that they will use to make profit. Don’t share in the profit (stock holdings aside) and they can offset by leasing out the system that current owners are helping perfect to other manufacturers.
Also, do you realize that you have paid the price of an additional vehicle with what you’ve paid for FSD that you didn’t use in two other Teslas? Ummm $12k? No way.

The danger of pulling up so quickly when the traffic lights are amber, is that drivers following you are likely to rear end you. And if not you, then maybe three or more cars further back being rear ended due to the combination of cumulative breaking delayed actions, reducing the breaking distance.

    Hi,
Are you aware that you can also subscribe to FSD on a monthly basis (turn it on/off whenever you want)
Currently it costs $199/month ($212.43 with tax)
Probably a good option for most instead of $12k - this then allows you to keep it when/if you switch to a new vehicle in the future

10:13 I just bought a used 2019 M3LR with FSD and I'm definitely using the Beta as much as I can. It's pretty hit-and-miss so far, but I'm enjoying it overall.
There's a turn-off to a side road that used to be wide open but now has one of those concrete barriers in the middle that you guys noticed it doesn't see. Well sure enough it doesn't see them despite it having reflectors standing up in the middle of it. I had to disengage because it tried to drive straight into that. I've also stopped it from going into one of the short concrete ones in the middle of the highway with no markers on it.
I also noticed it doesn't seem to have any merging etiquette. I've had it both try to cut someone off and not slow down to let someone pass me in merging. It also does not signal when merging but I can do that easy enough.
Related to the above, I really dislike how it handles passing lanes. If the lanes open up to the left, it's fine because it's already in the slow lane. However, in any situation where they open to the right, it will just stay in the fast lane regardless of the situation. (I do not have the minimal lane changes selected.) I had an angry person on my ass and it didn't want to get over. What's extra frustrating about it is I will signal to go right to try to counter this behavior and it will signal, move slightly, cancel and go back into the lane, then I signal again to say "No. Bad. Get over.", and it will (often very slowly like it's being maliciously compliant) finally move over. Usually, it will also stay lined up to the left side of the lane which is extra nerve-wracking when some jerk wants to pass me.
It also often seems to just slow down for no apparent reason. I'm just cruising at the set max speed on a smooth road with no issues and it suddenly slows down from the set 60 to 58...56...speeds back up...slows back down...why? I want to be a set consistent speed so that I'm predictable and people can use their normal cruise controls in their cars and not get annoyed at the car ahead of them fluctuating their speed. (I guess this is also a human behavior we don't want copied 'cause I see people space out and do this a lot.)
It doesn't like people turning off the road in front of me. It slows down for them which is fine and what I would do, but when they're turning off the road it will wait until they are *completely* off the road before it accelerates instead of just casually accelerating as they get out of your way. It's very awkward.
It's also pretty weird about lane changes (which I think I remember being a common thing for the previous versions). I've had it just jump into the fast lane of the highway just because when I'm going a perfectly reasonable speed and I have to cancel it and get back because some a-hole wants to go 20 over the speed limit and is zooming up behind me. It also sometimes jumps into another lane to just go faster which is very human-like. lol
Something I really want to see and I'm not 100% sure yet if it's still not doing this: getting over to the slow lane about 1-2 miles before an exit and staying there. I've seen this be a common issue in people's FSD videos and I'm hoping it learns to be more cognizant of the navigation and what lanes you should be in and when. Another thing I really really really want from doing this beta is for it to automatically go to a set increment (for me 5MPH over the speed limit) at each sign. There's an option for a mode that adjusts speed as the Tesla sees fit but that is terrifying. It just says "MAX" in blue with no indication of the actual max speed and I had it going fast enough to catch a ticket so I just quickly cancelled it. I just want to be able to cruise at 5 over. It's not the end of the world flicking up on the right scroll every time I hit a new speed sign but it is a bit annoying.
On the positive side I recently had an experience where someone slammed on their brakes ahead of me but I let the Tesla handle it and it was shocking how smoothly it handled it. It did not hesitate at all. I would've let off the accelerator for sure and it just smoothly continued knowing that it would not have to slow down. I was blown away.

I came back to watch this again, and I thought I'd give you a tip on the acceleration/deceleration. I noticed several times throughout the video where P.J. was noting how quickly it takes off from traffic control and other similar instances. I've heard that FSD will also behave slightly differently depending on your drive mode selected. So, if you were in standard acceleration, the car will be using that acceleration to it's full potential, but if you put it into the chill mode, then you're basically limiting the amount of power FSD can use for speeding up. Also, on another note, the highway FSD is actually not V12 yet, it's still running a different version of V11. So that may be why you were having some issues on the highway with speed, etc. Hope this helps/makes it more comfortable.

I’ve been using FSD daily and do like it a lot. Have been seeing a lot of the same things you experienced and described. It accelerates way too quickly, to the point where I feel I will run through tires faster… It seems very hesitant at 4-way stops and always stops way too early at intersections, so then needs to creep out to actually see traffic. It also doesn’t seem to know what to do once my destinations are reached, just slowly creeps ahead for some reason. Finally, I have been finding that it will follow slow cars on the highway instead of passing them. I constantly need to coax it to pass. On the bright side, it does drive much better than an earlier versions I had tried, and reacts naturally while driving, following the flow of traffic. It even slowed down for road bumps! I do wish it also saw and avoided potholes… Overall, it is a great feature, but way overpriced. I would absolutely purchase it at 10% of its current price.

Still a long way to go, but definitely starting to get useful. I would say it's worth about $3k now, nowhere near 12k. I paid 10k but I'm ok with it, it's been fun to test for 2 years. And it did save my car from getting sideswiped a couple times from idiot drivers on their phones.

My son had FSD on his 2020 Y, but when the deer crossed the road, the Tesla didn't see it in time. It was dark. It was night. My son said the deer was just there. Boom! He's okay. The Tesla was totaled.
I would try his FSD periodically. For about 2 minutes at a time. It did such stupid, life-threatening things that I had to frantically seize control back. And, I yelled at the developers. Multiple times. Why did you disengage? "Out of the blue, it decided to veer into oncoming traffic. I could see the traffic! Why would it do that? Augh!" And, each one of those incidents would be the extent of my interaction with whatever version of FSD that was, and likely the next few versions after that. It made me very nervous.
That said... I've been following the progress, via RUclips, and with 12.3, it looks promising. I'm tempted to book a test drive just to check it out.
Now... my son was an early adopter. I believe he paid $7,000 for FSD. I think it's probably worth about $5k, as a feature. I don't know what the plan is. I know they want to make Robotaxis, and my son told me that the plan was to have all the vehicles with FSD could become robotaxi fleet members, when they turned that on for the public. And, my son was looking forward to having his Tesla make money for him. So... as a business proposition, I think whatever Tesla wants to charge for the ability to have my car be a member of the fleet, in order to earn me money, that's probably okay. But, as just a feature for me to use, I don't want my car driving for anyone else, just me... I think that's worth about $5,000, on top of the cost of the car. Now, I don't live in a big city. I live near a small city, but I'm out in the boonies. All I do with my current gas-guzzler, is drive to the store, drive to the doctor's office, drive to church, and drive home. As I'm getting older, it would be nice to have the car do the driving, once it's capable. But, as the cars get smarter, I would expect that to be a feature of the car. So, I'm not willing to pay 'hiring a driver' prices. Personally, I just want the freedom to be able to go whenever I want. Wherever I want. If I get a call from my daughter out of town, and we want to go visit the grandbaby, I want to be able to, right then and there, get in my vehicle and go. I don't want to call a service. I don't want to pay a per-mile fee. I just want to go. And, if I'm driving a Tesla... I want it to do the driving, and be really good at it.
    That's just me.
Thank you for your test drive. I like what some of the other reviewers are saying: This is the worst that FSD will be from now on. It's only going to get better from here. With 12.3, I've actually been able to watch entire test drive videos uninterrupted. On previous version, I had to stop the videos because they were just making me too nervous!

Hiwever you can press the accelerator without disengaging. It might have gone slower exiting the dirt driveway because speed offset seems to have many roads at 25 mph. Thanks for the video and I think it's worth it because I plan on using it for family and friends robotaxi. My mom is in her 80s as well as many of her friends. Actually they've trained FSD using a subset of the driver pool, only the best drivers. It didn't stop at the light when it could have 'floored it' to get through before the red because of the laws, it did it because that is what the training taught it to do. I also wanted to mention that the highway driving is still v11, not v12.3.3, unless that has changed recently. I've had FSD for a 3 years, and I use it pretty much every time I drive, and report every intervention to Tesla. That is the whole point of having Beta testers. The biggest issue with v12.3.3 that I've seen is there seems to be a gap between what the routing system knows about the upcoming lanes and turns and what FSD's planning is doing. It often knows it is supposed to exit the highway, signals and gets over next to the exit lane, and then misses the exit. Or it has a right turn coming up 2 streets ahead, and changes lanes into a turn only lane one street too soon.
