  • In this video, Rip takes a deep dive into Knee's recent tweet expressing his dissatisfaction with Tekken 8. Rip breaks down the context behind Knee's statement and shares his own thoughts on the current state of the game. He discusses how the new mechanics in Tekken 8, such as the heat system and chip damage, have significantly altered the defensive playstyle that many players, including Knee, prefer.
Rip also explores the community's divided opinions on Tekken 8, drawing comparisons to the reception of past titles like Tekken 4 and Tekken Tag Tournament 2. Throughout the video, Rip provides insights into the challenges of balancing a fighting game and the potential impact of future patches on Tekken 8's gameplay. Whether you're a dedicated Tekken fan, a competitive fighting game player, or simply interested in the evolving landscape of the FGC, this video offers a fascinating look at the ongoing debate surrounding Tekken 8.

A game that puts so much emphasis on pressuring up close shouldn't make blocking such a disadvantage. Playing defense feels weak because you take so much chip damage if you correctly block strings. So often it feels like you're losing when defending correctly.

The issue is that in trying to force aggressive gameplay, they have turned everyone into a mixup rushdown monster. This has actually hurt rather than helped character diversity. Most of the time you are either defending long strings/flowcharts of aggro, or doing the same to your opponent. Small Tekken has been compromised too much. The heat system dumbs things down even more. Combos are way too long still, and added to heat bursts and rage arts it makes for a game that feels on autopilot for so much. Far too much guessing and 50/50 situations. You get locked into situations where there is nothing except holding on for dear life, guessing, and waiting for your turn. The actual playtime is reduced.
Also, having nerfed backdash wouldn't be as severe if they hadn't also given characters moves with exorbitant range and tracking covering tools to control distance. This makes spacing much less of a factor and the game feels not just automated but claustrophobic.

I’m fine with the more aggressive game and like being encouraged to press more buttons. I love this game so far.
But I think they need to reduce how common pure guessing scenarios are in this game, which it seems like they’re doing.
To be clear, I think 50/50’s are fine, they’re just too easy to create in this game. Should be an opportunity that you earn, not the foundation of the game flow.

A lot of thigs have this intentionaly add damn one option that kills opition select/counter option.
I was checking coffee clown low into back turned mixup. ,,ok so I can either try to chalange with duck jab but she got mid launcher that will trade and will kill me but is unsafe sounds like... SYKE mid, launching, safe orbital enjoy casino.

And there are more examples: Victor f3 options, Lili 1,1 into bacturned options, of course I'm talking when you block her. It is really not funny to play against such thing. Not only are quiet forced to pressing but also you are non-stop gambling.

I totally agree with you. Many of us who have been bitching arent against a more aggressive game. Its just that the way to that aggression is so easy and the risk/reward for the offensive player is all messed up.
Unfortunately, I dont know if Namco understands this seeing as how their design philosophy seems to revolve around giving every character moves that easily transition into mixup stances. Where one option in that stance covers most of what the defender wants to do or has such a high reward for such little risk its better to just stand there and block for dear life.

Let me just say this: I've been a huge Tekken fan since 3 and my love for the series will always be there. That said, Tekken 8 is not hooking me the way Tekken 7 did. And it all boils down to the samey-ness I experience while playing it. You can say that Heat makes almost every fight feel like you're just following the same pattern or formula.

I think there are Tekken fans that assume everyone is unhappy with the game because they surround themselves with people that hate the game. For example, T8 isn't Mostly Negative on Steam because the general audience hates it, it's because of the battlepass and shop.

I saw the way Mr. Naps, Nin and Knee were moving in Tekken 6 and it blew my mind. I would say since the offense is so oppressive one way to alleviate a lot of the offensive pressure is to increase back dash distance. For example Shaheen's back dash feels amazing and fluid while Law's feel like I'm in the mud. I get hit a lot more trying to backdash with Law, King (players with bad back dashes) than actually defending. I don't like that it feels I have to sit there and take the mix rather then relying on skill developed over years of play. It feels the game is saying 'we don't want you to move' and I don't like that.

"Show off their ideas and skills on new projects" is fine, but always has a risk. Go too far and you risk alienating some of the fan base, not enough and people get bored of the same thing again. If they had come out the gate with it minimally different than T7, people would have complained as well ("all they did was add more stage interactions and changed the combo extender mechanic again"). Before T8 was ever shown I wanted to make a video about where T8 would even go after 7. They had kind of peaked with wall bounce etc. Just adding simple stage/combo extensions wouldnt seem like enough, so T8 actually 'makes sense' in trying to create something new. The issue is that the new additions are divisive for the community because they challenge some of the core legacy of the entire franchise

First off the bugs of the game are definitely annoying playing lili and doing a ss cancel from cd when an opponent actives a rage art will flip the camera and if you're holding back you'll get hit. then all the random bugs while your playing and you're just "okay" moments those needs to be fix. Now the gameplay and that aggressive play style they want you to play is probably the biggest reason of turn off, even though I play Anna in tekken 7 I still play really defensive. I'll explain why the aggressive play is lame to me, the idea that power crush now takes recoverable damage and is safe when being hit sounds like I can walk up and spam a good power crush and not deal with keep out moves, then if you want to try to counter the power crush you throw, the idea that you should consider using offensive options to deal with offensive options is lame. the fact that throws and power crush can almost be the answer to all your problems is just stupid . the fact that throws is a universal homing option now I basically use it when I am calling out a step to force a duck or a break then power crush then reset then again mix it up with a safe mid launcher -3 or less play the power crush again, once you start spamming power crush and throws you'll understand how stupid the game can get but still your character needs a decent power crush.

In the case of Zafina, for example, I see she was trash and now she has been buffed, but the way she was buffed seems to me like she just earned some casino bullshit, and that's just not what Tekken should be about. What needs to be buffed is DEFENSE. The problem here is the overall philosophy behind this entry. Heat and chip is totally fine considering each aggressive action you take leads to you gaining that lost health back. All it takes is one right read/proper block and punish and BOOM! Now momentum is in your favor again because you had good defense. Defense is super rewarding in T8 and I don’t see how other people aren’t recognizing that. Just look at the amount of health you could get back once you land a Heat Engager. People just want to play a Tekken 7.5 because they can’t or don’t want to adapt to T8’s environment.

I'm a fan of Tekken 4, and believe it was never as bad as people made it out to be compared to other fighting game franchises, but dislike Tekken 8's lack of defense in the same way I dislike Tekken 4's balancing and broken shit. Given that, I can understand why people enjoy Tekken 8 as well in the way I still enjoy Tekken 4, but ultimately do believe this is where Tekken team wanted the game to always go, but couldn't because of hardware limitations and already getting scorched right before Tekken 5.

THIS. I'm a high level player and you are spot on. The game is currently designed in a way where the best options defensively are to either block(and get chipped to death) or use Powercrush/Heat Burst to escape pressure. Youll rarely see anyone try to duck or sidestep because if they get caught theyre being put into a blender with Heat. Like you said, it makes match outcomes feel VERY formulaic and samey. If there were no tournaments, if there were no Tekken youtubers, Tekken 7 would have not even sold half of what it achieved.
I mention it because the opinion of the pros and the streamers matter almost more than the casual playerbase, because the excitement and dedication of the casuals to the game is dependent of the pros and the streamers.

For a game that’s so shit, and hated by its community I’m really upset that they killed SoulCalibur season 3 for this. Y’all don’t deserve it. I’d give you guys 20 years of Akuma and Geese for Algol alone.

Facts! Not to mention, we are only 3 months into the game... let's see how it is after a few balance patches.... all the game needs are better defensive options and fewer 50/50's

@@djohnson504x3 you see thats the point why old heads dont agree with the current game play. Its because it forces you to go 50 50. It is what it is.

That’s pretty much how I feel. Don’t like it, boot up Tekken 7 then, but I’m going to play Tekken 8.

how about no 😂. Nothing wrong with listing off OBJECTIVELY bad things in the game such as homing grabs or overpowered heat smashes. News flash, balance patches and bug fixes happen because people complain. Complaints make the game better. Namco could sell you Lidia for 30$ and you would accept it and tell people who diagree to leave 😂. 😂 People will always want things improved.
Sometimes its uncalled for but sometimes it is
