LESSON NOTES:
In this video I explain the 2 ways a bassline can move. I discuss the use of chromaticism. And I give a step by step breakdown of my walking bassline written for the bebop tune 'Lady Bird'.

Very organized, presented slowly so it's easy to understand. Good use of note and chord symbols on screen.
Thank you Mark, I really appreciate that! I'm glad this video helped you
+Mark Leininger I'll second this comment as well! As a bass player, I'm finding your lessons invaluable as I further my improvisation skills. Some of the best videos online here. Keep it up :)
As a bassist, this lesson was very helpful and refreshing. Thank you!
Thanks! I always wondered what the heck the bassists are playing, now that's demystified for me!
Hi Sharon, I have some of my composition recordings available for download at:

Thanks for your interest,

I was watching the "Palouse Jazz Project" in Boise at a club called "The Sapphire Room". They were a sextet, and around halfway through the show there was a huge boom. Turns out the bass players bridge broke!! Luckily, the pianist was a jazz Professor and was able to finish off the show while playing bass on the left hand and comping. It was so impressive, and the bass player got to just chill out and watch haha XD
I have FINALLY learnt to walk the bass, while doing different things with the right hand because of this video. Thank you!
Thanks Ted! So glad to hear these videos are what you need!
Thanks DubGnosis! Really pleased this helped :)
BjHoneyFingers!
Thanks for the comments - love the humor! I should have said that you don't have to use a walking bassline for every chord change. You could just use it on some of the changes to create a bit more energy and life, then just go back to a sustained bass note.
Thanks so much Lordnkx! I love hearing that these videos are helping people out, thanks for watching!
Thanks so much Chypcar! Means a lot to hear this from you.
Part 3 is definitely coming - I just wanted to film a bit more footage for it first, as it was missing a few points. Any topics you would like me to cover in the rhythm video?
Thanks Zaerdna! Love hearing this - glad these videos are what you need! Plenty more ready to upload over the next few weeks :)
I have found these jazz video clips invaluable references! I have been playing for many years and struggling through jazz styles, voicings, and improvisation. But since I have dedicated time to listen and practice your techniques my proficiency has increased exponentially! Thank you for sharing your gifts with the world of music!!!! GREAT STUFF!!!
Such an inspiring comment - thanks so much Daniel. I'm so happy to hear this!
Your welcome sir, and I'm honored to hear back from you! I'll stay tuned to your amazing presentations and share with other keyboard players that want to develop their craft as well!
Thanks Elintasokas! So glad to hear these are helping you :)
Glad to hear this Ekovv! I've been putting more thought into covering the bases in an order, rather than just random videos. Glad things are falling into place!
Have always wondered what that phrase, “walking bass” meant-thank you very much for explaining! :)
Thanks so much Dean!! It really means a lot to me to read this & I'm so pleased these videos are what you need! There's many more in the pipeline too so make yourself at home :)
You explained the subject clearly, thank you for this. I'll try to combine your Bossa Nova and Walking Bass patterns - at least once in a while.
Thanks a Lot!. It was a great and simile explanation.
U are a great musician and an eccellent teacher!
I will follow u.
Bye
Julian - as a beginning bass player desperately wanting to develop interesting walking bass lines, this tutorial was great. I have developed a series of licks/patterns that walk me through the complete cycle of fifths and am able to apply these licks/patterns to most jazz standards. But - here's the problem!! Using the same licks over more than one chorus becomes boring. Your tutorial has opened up a new window for me. Thanks mate!!
Very good my friend, tnks for the explanation...i didnt know jazz was so easy..
Thanks brother. I want to bring jazz to my dance music production :) Thanks for the wonderful tips!!
Thanks so much Martin - really pleased to hear this helped!
This really got me to understand "walking on the bass" . . thank you! best video about this topic on the tube!
Thank you , I’m still a bit inexperienced to follow this easily . I do understand what you’re doing though . I’ll go practise !! 😁👍
Hi Sharon, I have a soundcloud, it's soundcloud . com/practiceroomhero (but with no spaces).
I'm presuming you've posted another lesson where you don't target the ROOT as part of a walking bass line?
Muy. Buenas. Clases
. Jazz. Tutorial
Really helpful well explained, that will come in useful, thank you
Glad I'm not the only guitar player who watches these.
I actually did set up my old keyboard after a week of watching his videos here and there. The thing must have been sitting in my closet for at least 10 years until now. I'm surprised it still works, even bought a sustain pedal for it.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge I found this very helpful as I plan my journey to learning Jazz piano
Great lessons. Thanks for taking the time to share it.
Jazz is actually starting to make sense to me. Thanks a lot for your videos!
Very good tutorial, thank you for keeping it simple. learning the bass at this time, and watching the left hand is great...
Thanks Pierre - really pleased to hear this helped you! Thanks for the comment
That's a good starting point - I think throwing in a bit of chromaticism is all that's needed to make your approach sound more sophisticated
Video works very well with your tutorial! Good investment, thanks.
hans.
Thanks Paul. I know exactly what you mean, & I actually cut out a short section on practice, but I think I might post the full version after reading this. I basically said that you want the left hand to become automatic, & to focus on the right hand. The way to get the left hand to be automatic is to practice just one bass line at a time (over a ii-V-I). The theory is that if you practice anything 2000 times you'll be able to do it without thinking. I think you can get there before 2000 though!
very clear , thank you!
This is great, and easy step by step on how walkings are made. Thanks!
very well teaching dude, easy to understeand and very clear explanation thanks a lot
I've been watching lots of "walking bass" tutorials and this seems to be the most clear and direct one I've found to get me started with an approach to this playing style. Great job.
Nice tutorial. Its very helpfull.. i hope you can teach us play jazz.. Thanks alot Mr.
Well explained, that's what I say to my students.
AWESOME lesson! Thank you so much!
Really thrilled, amazing! You are truly amazing :)
Great video man! Thank you very much for the lesson. Shall incorporate what you've taught into my playing. Cheers! :)
I’ve got to say the lady bird section really made me feel like I’m sitting in a European cafe
Actually yes - I've played guitar for years and always accepted that 'feel' is something you've either got, or you haven't. Rhythm and feel - can they be developed with practice? BTW Julian - I know music is music, but I'm amazed how your lessons transfer so well to my instrument (although I'm starting to develop a hankering to get my keyboard out) - thanks again for your inspirational tuition.
Thank you man! You're a blessing.
Good stuff, this stuff has always been a mystery
this is brilliant, just started playing. Does this mean i can play any key arrangement as long as it is in the chord? left hand is the hardest esp. when you start out old but this gives me hope, thanks!
Thank you for the video. Can you tell me if your have a b5 in the chord on the right hand i.e F7b5 do you need flat the 5 in your left hand walking bass line?
Great teaching my friend; one of the best out there!
No, I was hoping you have nontutorial compositions of your own posted somewhere. I would definitely buy them to listen to?
Silly question but I’m still struggling to understand the stringing together of chord progressions and key specific to jazz. As an example, with the Lady Bird standard... what key and chord progression is used?
Seus videos sao otimos :)
". . .obviously the bass player will be the guy that plays the walking bass line, however . . . it's equally effective for the piano player to play walking bass lines". Ha, ha! We bass players (including the gals!) are all redundant, and have been wasting our time. ;-)
Hello! At 4:27 ----- can I just about the meaning of 'and then we have three notes to get to G' ? If we start at 'D', then three notes are actually played after that --- which is E, F and G. That's three notes. So does this mean that if we start at 'D', then we actually need to get to 'G' with FOUR notes? That is - E, F, F#, G ? Thanks!
Great tutorial! may i ask how you learnt jazz piano? ive been playing piano for 13 years and i now want to know how to construct jazz chord sequences other than ii-V-i progressions. :)
How come there's only one thumbs up sign? I could have given you a million thumbs ups! Very comprehensive ... Thank you!
Hi buddy nice video but there are things i didnt understand so well for example wenn aplying walking to 2-5-1 the first part from d to g i got it well but wenn you did the one from g to c you make a very strange jump bouncing from key to key thats is where my question comes you make that jump ramdomly but guiding yourself through ear to know if it sound well or there is any formula that i need to aply in there?
Thanks very much
Great!! Great!!! Thanks a bunch!
Love this! Thank you so so so much!
Thanks for this long-awaited video. Bass lines are not that easy. I usually play the full chord in my left hand; Dmin7 (D F A C) then proceed to G7 (G B D F). Wich is not really good, but it doesn't sound bad.
Coool vid... Thanks for sharing.
Great video! I have a suggestion, I'm not sure if you've covered it. I'm not sure what the name of it is, but it utilizes tritones as passing chords before minor chords. Eg if you were going to play an An minor 9 you would go a half step down from Ab then play its tritone so G and Db in your left hand and the major chord a whole step down from the Db in your right so Bb major. I think its used in gospel and neo soul a lot. I hope you can understand what I'm getting at!
Excellent stuff. Is the ladybird arrangement part of your books?
Good teaching video, I like it very much, but my English level is really slag, so listen very hard, ha ha, but still can learn through imitation
Love your videos, but please put an EQ on your voice. There must be a peak in the high mids, that should be softened.
TUMBS UP!!!!!!!!!!! :)
Warm handshake from Kampala. Good work 👏 🙌 👍. God bless 🙌.
Are you on Soundcloud? I would like to follow you, I have some music there under "Sharon Kathleen Johnson ".
JULIAN, THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR GENEROSITY. AT 77, I CAN ONLY TELL YOU THAT AT THE LEVEL I PLAY, YOUR VIDEOS HAVE BEEN AN ABSOLUTE GIFT. I PLAN TO ADOPT YOU AS MY CYBER-TUTOR. THE QUALITY AND CALIBER OF YOUR INSTRUCTION IS 5-STAR, ... THANKS DEAN PEDLAR
great tutorial!!!like always!!! hey could you do some jazz funk stuff
/watch?v=lZcVYrF7xvA , stuff like that and you are my hero!!!!!!
eggsellent stuff jules. had to take a break from learning the pianix but im back now and i see you are still telling the mortals how its done. Hope you and this channel get the success you deserve. later gater
Great Lesson. This is what I find really difficult in piano- the right hand wont do what i want it to once the left hand gets moving..
Ed Friedland's _Building Walking Basslines_ expands on these ideas. It is for bassists, but it could certainly be used by pianists serious about getting their walking bass on.
nice lesson.
I do like the way you teach and you are a great pianist and amazing teacher. Thank you!
YOU ARE THE BEST TEACHER..I EVER KNOW..EL REY
DE LOS MEJORES..LO MAXIMO..
Thanks Julian, great video, one of the reasons for left-handed Hanon... imo :)
Could it also be going from g to c in 2-5-1"GABDC"?
Thanks for your lessons dude, they are always great to watch for inspiration!
cool! I've been playing guitar for 38 years and bass guitar for the last 15. This was great info for bassist. \m/ . . \m/
Wow, I'm so glad this video helped you Tommy! Thanks for the comment :)
Subtitle in spanish please!! Greetings from Chile
Does this become second nature with practice even with songs new to you?
Great explanation of walking base thank you.
You are lovely. Well presented. Simple. No fluff. Ineeded a hand at the Walking Bass Line. Just have to practice this up now.
Thank You so much. + must search for your book too.
What do the numbers mean? Such as the one chord, the five chord etc.
Beautiful. Great job. Made it easy and understandable
Brilliant. Thank you for sharing your precious knowledge.
could you suggest a beginner to advanced level lesson series that anybody could digest.
you have a super talent, not just in composition and playing but also in teaching! Thanks for this upload...always wondered how walk bass was arranged.
Thanks so much! Had I bothered to look for this, I would have spared myself years of floundering. Cheers.
thank you for your videos they are super easy to understand im hooked lol
i love you
very very usefull explanation! thanks
thanks for your lecture sir! Amitabha
Thanks Julian, this is really good. It complements the dbass lessons by Geoff Chalmers that I use. Much easier for me to understand the intervals on a keyboard.
👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Hi, I have problems learning by books so this helps a lot! I learn by ear so I hope you will come out with your playing by ear videos soon! I Play around with the key board a lot and pick out tunes with my ear, but before I play, I mentally hear the notes and look at the keys before I play them. I am slowly getting that perfect pitch down. Its like having a new sense, before I could never know what note I was playing because internally my mind could not Identify it directly.
I knew what note it was by sight and I knew it sounded right but I was hopeless trying to piece a tune together because my mind just couldn't string the notes together with what I was hearing in my mind.
Any advice?
So glad to hear this Randy, playing by ear is a more valuable skill than being able to read music. If you can already play by ear, then learning to read music will seem like a much easier task - if you decide you want to learn one day.
I really can't wait to post the ear training videos - the course itself is finished, but I have to prepare the videos. I also have a few jazz videos I will post leading up to Christmas, then immediately after Christmas I will be switching to the ear training for a good few months. I wanted to keep the 2 separate, rather than going back and forth. Stay tuned :)
