I think a good substitute is also milkfish belly cut! The texture is very close because the milkfish belly is soft and fatty and as long as you use the same sauce I think it will be a very good substitute. I love unagi and ate it a lot when I went to Japan so I tried to recreate it when I got home

Our Asian Market had this and I got it-I couldn't read the writing on it and I thought this was real...just a little instant tasting (not bad but kinda like instant noodles instead of regular ones that you boil). I want to learn how to make black cod into faux-nagi

Artificial eel sounds like a great idea because I know populations of wild Eel aren't doing very well and this seems more sustainable.
