I harvest and saw my own hardwood off my farm and cherry is the #1 tree that I have and use in my woodworking projects. I can confirm it is the most enjoyable wood that you can work with.
Thanks, great information for this beginner! I just bought 14 long pieces of cherry wood from an older woodworker who is shutting down his shop. I plan to use it for a bookshelf.
Subscribed as soon as you said " you can leave"!!!!! Love it!!!!! Im looking at making a cherrywood topped coffee table. we'll see how this goes!!! Your vid helps!!! Thanks!!
I buy my cherry on second hand market, old furniture for a cheap price. I use the cherry for shipmodeling. It is a beautiful wood to use. Even to use for carving. And I agree it burns easy when you saw it or sand it machinal. Thanks for this informative video.
I just got some cherry wood from an old cherry tree in my garden.. Unfortunately part of the tree got some wood bugs and died so I am looking for tips what can I do with the wood. When I first cut it I could not believe how beautiful it was.. When it comes to the thing why there is plenty of cherry wood available in Home Depot in California I do think it is because there are many cherry orchards there.. So once the trees get older and stop producing to the liking of the owner, they cut them (sad) and sell them for wood and start a new plantation.
I bought a beautiful piece 5' long for my fireplace mantle and now I am finishing it with an oil base natural colour. The board is 2" thick and 9.5" deep and cost $200. Thank you for the info.
Glad I came across your video. Great job! I bought a rough sawn 12/4 at 10ft length of Pennsylvania Cherry for $344 today. I’m going to use it for a workbench bottom with a European Beech top. I purchased it locally from MacBeath Hardwoods.
I have a few chunks of cherry from a tree that was cut down. They were sitting outside for a few months in the weather. I am wanting to make some mallets and cutting boards from them - will I likely face splitting as the wood dries out? And is a solid hunk of cherry as a butcher's block a good idea? Or is it better if I cut it into strips and glue it back together to show the edge grain for the surface? Thanks!
Splitting is within the realm of possibility. You should be able to get an idea though if the end grain is already showing signs of cracking or splitting. I believe a butcher block would be ok out of a solid piece, but cutting it into strips and putting it back together would probably hold up longer in the long run I’d think. I hope it all works out!
Have you ever worked with choke cherry/tame cherry? I just took a few choke cherry trees down to keep the goats from eating the leaves and am thinking abut milling them for projects.
Thanks for the video. I am going to be creating a lap desk for my wife using cherry. The board I picked out has a beautiful strip of sapwood, which will, hopefully, turn out beautiful as I match the sapwood up in the center of the desk. Thank you, also, for the recommendation on spray lacquer. This will be the first piece I have made out of cherry.
Have made several solid body guitars from cherry, love it. Looks good, tone is good, workability is good, stability is good, easy to finish. . Readily available locally from a large furniture builde rough cut at a great price.
Just got curious about it because I live in the middle of cherry orchard land Washington. I'm going to become a scavenger because of my curiosity. It's everywhere in piles wasting away, people burn metric tons of these trees each year lol...thanks man
These vids are helpful. Thanks! I just inherited a bunch of walnut my dad biught at a sawmill auction a long time ago. Would love to hear your thought on that wood
There will definitely be a walnut video! I too ended up with a lot of walnut left at the shop from the previous owner and it was the first hardwood I worked with.
There is a cherry tree in my relative's backyard and I have permission to take a branch But do I take dry branch or normal branch I plan to use it for wood carving not furniture
Hey, give us more insight please. How likely is this wood to suffer burn marks from saw blades? Any finishes to avoid? How likely is it to warp? Tell us about moisture content levels for working with it.
Hey, OneDrop. I did mention in the video that cherry is notorious for burning easily, mostly caused by a dull blade. The best way to avoid this is to make sure the blade is nice and sharp. And I’d mentioned in the video that I think just about any finish works great for cherry. Preferably a clear top coat, but oil finishes are fine too. And honest answer, I really don’t know much about moisture content with cherry. I always buy my lumber ready to go from the hardwood store. Not too sure about warping either, but just in my personal experience I’ve never had cherry warp on me.
my first woodworking project was a display for my lighter collection in my production technology class, i used cherry for it that was provided by the school because it was a small amount and i’m already hooked. now in the process of sourcing a good few boards of it so i can build a gaming desk. i plan on burning the cherry a little bit with a torch to give it a darker colour, and then i’m gonna coat it in clear epoxy resin. i also plan on using a cnc machine to cut out a pattern in the wood and fill it with a pearlescent blue coloured resin
Hate wasted time. Hard wood, has sapwood that stains different then hhe regular grain, as it ages it will get darker same with Brazilian cherry. Use a sharp blade when cutting, sands and stains easily

I’m heading out tomorrow to get some 30 year old black cherry boards for $1.70 a bf. Anxious to work with it!
Sounds like some nice stuff! What’s the plan for it?
Great little video man thx
I get my cherry in the backyard (40 acres) Beautiful wood.
I cut firewood and sell smoking wood and cherry quickly became my favorite wood to work with!! Fist bump!

goddamn for $200 where I'm from you could get even a board of the same thickness and depth but like 7ft long, in Black and White Ebony.
If you don't like sap wood on cherry you can leave!! Awesome LOL. This made me subscribe. Great video.
Nice man good explanation. Would make a great table top!

I have a question about the kind of wood in my kitchen and if I can strip the old stain and make it more natural color? How do I send you a pic of it?
What finish do you suggest for an outdoor seat bench? Thx

I’ve recently cut down a big maple and my dads a guitarist so you think it’s possible for a solid guitar?

Bought a house and the whole bottom floor is cherry wood. He said cherry doesn't take a stain 😭 is that true?
Cherry will take stain. I just personally prefer it’s natural colors 😊
Thank you!
