I saw a five year old who wanted to be the Titanic for Halloween and he made his dad be the captain and his mom be the iceberg. he wore a little ship costume on suspenders. It was adorable.
That was Mom and Dad, who wanted to play along. What 5 yr old thinks of including his parents in anything except his food and basic needs? I have been a trick or treating kid and parent and grandparent. I've occasionally seen others small 3 person families dress up, maybe 3 times.. but I don't get out a lot. Maybe it's more common these days. Parents definitely do more with their kids now than they did in the 1960's.. We were glorified pets. As the song says, glorified bills... 5 yr olds don't even fully get the Halloween concept and it's just dress up fun occasionally. Must be a first child or they didn't care people with more kid experience would know this. Or they think they are just being silly and cute. They look young enough for that.

But I distracted them with candy and also hit them with my candy bag. One of them bit my fake bone off, but I was able to get away before any other bones were stolen.

Little kids choose the wildest costumes. One year, my little brother decided to be “flea man”. Flea man does not exist. He just decided, out of the blue, that he wanted to be someone named “flea man”, and made my poor mom scramble to figure out how to make a costume for that. Another time, my younger sister decided she wanted to be an egg. My mom actually made her a very good egg costume, but my sister spent the whole night crying because people kept asking if she was a ghost. That “please don’t judge me” is so real, too. One year, while my mom was running errands, I got tasked with helping my brother put his zombie costume on. She meant help him choose a shirt and get dressed, not play tug-of-war with our dog using an old undershirt, rub it in the dirt from the flowerbeds, then use a bag of fake candy blood I got from my youth group Halloween party to smear his shirt with fake blood, then cover his shoes, face, pants, and candy bag with fake blood splatters. I am still EXTREMELY proud of how amazing that zombie costume turned out, but my mom was less than enthused when my elementary aged brother came running outside looking like an extra in a horror movie. HE loved it though, so I still count it as a win.

She meant help him choose a shirt and get dressed, not play tug-of-war with our dog using an old undershirt, rub it in the dirt from the flowerbeds, then use a bag of fake candy blood I got from my youth group Halloween party to smear his shirt with fake blood, then cover his shoes, face, pants, and candy bag with fake blood splatters. I am still EXTREMELY proud of how amazing that zombie costume turned out, but my mom was less than enthused when my elementary aged brother came running outside looking like an extra in a horror movie. HE loved it though, so I still count it as a win.
