Whenever I see a veteran (homeless or not) I make sure to stop and acknowledge them by thanking them for their service to this country. You wouldn't believe what it means to a veteran just to say thank you for your service. It is an honor for me to be that example to my children also. These veterans have been thru it and get done so dirty. I have many in my family who have defended this country also. Let me just say if the veteran is old enough to have been in a war or overseas, I agree. But many people went into the military for 4 years, just to have a paycheck, like any other job. Then they left it after 4 years. . Yet still continue to have healthcare for the rest of their lives! These are the ones sucking the VA dry! Many of these people are alcoholics, and lazy drug addicts. They were like that before they went in the military and they continued like that for the rest of their lives. That's why they are homeless. You are calling them all veterans but that isn't so. Almost didn't even graduate high school and then had to get a GED to stay in the military for at least for years. They did that because they lived in a poor area and couldn't get a job. Or they were too stupid to get a job anywhere else. You can't count those people as veterans. You have people coming from other countries just like my family did long ago. My Irish family was ostracized the same way things you are saying about these people. Because they want a better life for themselves and their children they may be much harder workers than those alcoholics that you are trying to lump with real veterans. There is a difference.

The monthly check I now get from the government allows me to live well without getting a job, and I get to send money home every month. That, along with the free permanent housing, healthcare and food stamps that I get is making life a dream come true here in America. The food banks are an added convenience. Since I don't have to work now, I spend my days caring for my family and doing side hustles for extra cash. Life is so good that my wife and I decided to have two more children. Hopefully, we'll get the bigger house that we applied for. If they deny us, we'll just keep making children until they do. I was once a legal immigrant who came to Chicago in the late 70s at the height of the infamous Chicago blizzard I was still wearing my open sandals and summer dress. I was fortunate that my cousin picked me up at the airport bringing some boots and a coat. I was so shell-shocked and felt like I was going to die from the below 0 temp having come from a tropical country.
