@@liu3gz I asked it the following question. Very interesting response. Very different then this media report says. Question: What's the difference between deepseek and chatgpt
The key point that was not mentioned in this short clip is that you CANNOT create cheap models like these without using a very expensive frontier model. Thus, there is no DeepSeek2 if GPT5 or similar models don't already exist. So this does not affect the frontier labs per se. In fact, I believe that is how the smaller models are trained like o1 mini; which uses a teacher model like o1 to do the fine tuning. But it does showcase that small-budget labs can still do something amazing in this multi billion-dollar industry. Kudos to that.
It’s absurd that the model says, "I am ChatGPT developed by OpenAI based on GPT-4 architecture." Either they’re using the OpenAI API, or they heavily used GPT responses for training even without filtering keywords or any proper fine-tuning. Either way, it’s a clear sign of incompetence.

@0:53 _"... It actually thinks it is ChatGPT ..."_ Regarding that mistake, the same thing actually also happened with Google's Gemini Pro in the earlier days. The idea behind the Open Source model is to encourage more players to fork the code, get involved, and bring their ideas to the table-so this is working as intended. DeepSeek is doing what many other companies are likely doing as well, albeit without broadcasting it. These companies are probably focusing on their own use cases with proprietary data they prefer not to share. Andrej did mention this in his tweet, though it might still confuse some. Companies with mega clusters will focus on the next big innovations, while smaller players may wait to piggyback on those advancements. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that, especially if companies like Meta or Google see AI models not as their core business but as tools to enhance their primary operations.😊😊
A lot of people are missing something important here. No biggie, you don't work with this. As expected, China just used the 100$ million dollar model to train the little model. Captioning and data is the big cost.
Is this why we still haven't seen GPT 5 and the like? They know the models will be trained on so they are waiting until they have progress on the next model before releasing?
openAI, even with God's money cannot hope to compete against something that is 88% cheaper on inference. OpenAI is building Rolls Royce. China is building Lexus, nay, BYD. And oh yah, it's a track race. Oops.
so Deepseek is just a fake o1 mini? Taking 01 outputs and training a cheap model on it? Why not just use the real o1 mini rather than a fake 01 mini? Sure the fake 01 mini is maybe free - but I doubt it's as good as the real 01 mini, and 01 mini isn't that expensive either.
The reporter didnt mention o1. She mentioned GPT4 ans claimed that was the newest model. Totally stupid report. Their researchers cant even keep up🤷🏿♂️
It wasn’t trained on Outputs from another LLM, that’s why it was cheaper. The other frontier models trained their models from the ground up, that’s why their training is more expensive.
Apple doesn't have any industrial know-how to manufacture anything, they contracted the manufacturing to the OEMs, and almost all of them along the full supply chain of iPhones are owned by the Chinese in mainland China and Taiwan. Apple is just doing the design of the CPU chip, phone shells and mostly the marketing hypes, lol. The only techy part Apple is doing about iPhone is the design of the CPU which is then manufactured by Taiwan's TSMC. Nowadays, even Xiaomi can design high-end CPU chips by itself, let alone the tech giant Huawei. According to the media reports in October 2024, China's phone brand Xiaomi had possessed capabilities of designing 3nm chips and was praised by the Beijing municipal govt (Xiaomi is headquatered in Beijing city), Xiaomi used to rely on the American company Qualcomm for phone CPU supplies (Qualcomm designed them and contracted to TSMC for manufacturing), now Xiaomi can break free from the dependence on Qualcomm and design its own CPUs and contracted TSMC for manufacturing. However, the US govt might add Xiaomi into the sanction list and Taiwan's TSMC may not dare to manufacture for Xiaomi as a result. Therefore, China must develop its own EUV lithography machines as soon as possible.

China is gonna win the AI race because: 1. China AI's are open source and public, and everyone can improve the AIs; American AI's are proprietary, owned and privately guarded by corporations that are unwilling to share and cooperate with competitions. 2. China actually dominates the top science and engineering schools in the world right now. That means China are chunking out more high-quality STEM graduates every year, (i.e., who comes out of the top and most competitive STEM schools in the world,) while the US actually has a shortage of STEM graduates. 3. Hundreds of millions of Chinese, including all those STEM graduates AND hobbyists, are working on Chinese AI's that are open source and public. It is just the raw number and power. 2 to 3 decades ago, China had the raw manpower for labors, now they have the raw brainpower for STEM.

Which they have…
Where the Dutch company ASML sources 85% of what goes into making their lithography machines from around the world. As ASML cuts off China from its technology/patents at the request of the USA
But then no one thought to go back even farther. Forgetting about the fact 85% of the components are sourced from other places/countries
They should have been asking what goes into making those components or the patents on what goes into that component in the first place?
Take Rare Earths for example:
The mines China controls
the supply chains China controls
the rare earths themselves that China controls
refining of those rare earths that China controls
And more importantly????? who has the patents on that technology for that refining process which you guessed it China controls

Applications in Semiconductor Manufacturing
Lasers and Lithography
Lasers are indispensable in semiconductor manufacturing, especially in advanced lithography. REEs like neodymium are used in Nd:YAG lasers, which are critical for UV light generation in lithography processes.
Laser Cleaning
As semiconductor components shrink, traditional cleaning methods become less effective. Lasers, particularly those using REEs, offer a solution by dislodging particles adhered to wafers through Van Der Waal forces.
Magnets and Plasma Material Processing
Permanent magnets, often made from REEs like neodymium, are used in plasma material processing systems. These systems are essential for thin film growth and patterning.
Coatings and Abrasives
REEs like yttrium oxide are used for coatings in plasma etch chambers, reducing maintenance costs. Cerium dioxide abrasives are used in the Chemical Mechanical Polishing (CMP) process to achieve extremely flat wafer surfaces.
The Impact on Adjacent Technologies
Optoelectronics and LEDs
REEs like cerium and yttrium are vital for the production of white LEDs. These LEDs are increasingly used in various applications, from displays to therapeutics.
Silicon Photonics
In the emerging field of silicon photonics, REEs like erbium are being studied for their potential to enable silicon to emit light, thus making monolithic silicon photonics chips a possibility.

That is the whole point of “open source”, that anyone can learn it and improve it.

Isnt it just a distilled model? So the frontier GPT-like models are actually necessary. Just thinking out loud
Book titled The Elite Society's Money Manifestation holds the key to forbidden tehniques for manifesting money, which have truly transformed my life, it's worth exploring
When I was in school, I was taught every day to be the better version of myself and not to judge others. But now, watching Western media criticize DeepSeek as a threat, I’m starting to question if I missed the class on ‘How to Fear Everything That’s Different.’ Maybe they should’ve added a lesson on ‘Chill 101’ to the curriculum. 😂
Gotta love China lol popping the AI bubble in real time
A journalist who knows what she is talking about. That’s refreshing
state of the art? what about o1, o3 ?
China is gonna win the AI race because:
1. China AI's are open source and public, and everyone can improve the AIs; American AI's are proprietary, owned and privately guarded by corporations that are unwilling to share and cooperate with competitions.
2. China graduates 5 to 6 times more engineers, scientists and STEM students than the US every year; and, in 2023, 7 of the top 10 (and 16 out of the top 20) STEM institutes and universities are in China.
ChatGPT ingests the entire internet. I can't imagine how another AI ingests the entire internet from the outputs of ChatGPT.
no, chatgpt is not based on the entire internet. For example, chatgpt has no access to Chinese data while the Chinese companies access to internet both inside and outside of China. The data guarded by the Chinese guardrail is a big trove of knowledge.
@@dahaixing2376 How do you know that OpenAI doesn't have access to Chinese data? The Chinese internet is also accessible from outside, especially with VPN.
