I have been that person, just because I think it would be funny if it hits-which it has. I just remembered that I actually have a video saved on my PS4 when I did it to a Birdie in SFV and he rage quit. lol
Sometimes when I'm plus and my opponent does something ridiculous and wins the interaction, I remember Brawlpro saying "you're only minus if you're a bitch" and laugh instead of getting salty
"Okay, they do this option every time after this thing. I'm finally going to adapt." *they don't do that option because they're psychic, I guess, and blow me up* Aw, dang it.
“Alright, my punish isn’t super good, but I’ve punished their wake-up reversal 3 times in a row now. Yeah it’s a new round; but they’ll absolutely not wake-up reversal off this first knockdown” “Aw dangit.”
I felt this in my very soul. For the entirery of the two rounds, they always meaty.. always. Just well time or not, they mashin'. But the moment I fingers move to do that reversal, you best bet they'll be blocking.
Lately I’ve been trying to give my opponent credit for things they do and acknowledging the dice roll when I get hit in an RPS situation, and it’s really helping me improve faster. It stops me from taking everything that goes wrong in a match as a sign I did something wrong, and lets me focus instead on the choices I’m making and the way I’m executing-things I actually have control over. I think it helps especially when playing better players. I have a tendency to get frustrated with myself for not finding a path to victory, but the fact of the matter is you’ll lose a lot of interactions bc they’re playing on a higher level of the MU, and that’s fine! It really clears out your headspace, it’s amazing. People should be saying “aww dangit” more often I think, they would be happier campers.
What worked for me is stopping for a sec after a ranked set and think about things that I did right and things I did wrong. It stops me from getting angry at my opponent and helps with learning at the same time. The switch from getting progressively tilted to staying calm thanks to this technique feels amazing tbh.
Still occasionally mess up my inputs, but still get the dopamine hit when I guess correctly. It’s a strange interaction to get bopped and be like “if I didn’t fuck up the motion I had their ass.”
smirking, shaking my head with eyes closed, then watching my character get wall-bounce combo'd for 80%, thinking "as soon as my limbs respond to my inputs again your ass is grass."
Every competitive game is like this to an extent due to the fundemental nature of information and fighting another human, fighting games just make it more obvious, because that's part of the fun
I've known the guy who made this meme (not the flipnote audio, but the SF6 clip) for well over a decade and it's been wild seeing him blow up this much over it. Unironically proud of him, tbh. (He's always been this funny, btw.)
One often overlooked thing as well is that sometimes as the player on offense it does work to throw out a completely stupid terrible option that one would do. Sometimes doing the dumbest thing ends up working cause your opponent is always thinking about the most optimal plays that you could do.
Especially because, as soon as you do it, you can just tell they get insecure about what you will do in the following interactions. Makes the game harder to play for them, it's great.
I do this all the time. It makes you think you're getting beat by a scrub, but in reality, you're the scrub. It doesn't matter how stupid/suboptimal a decision your opponent makes if it works against you.
The funny thing is that even if you were *just* playing rock paper scissors... everybody knows that guy who is their rock paper scissors demon. And while it's ridiculous there's something deeply deflating about realising you're missing a strategy in something so abstract and simple-seeming. The coolest thing about fighting games at a high level to me is how different players develop wildly different frameworks for understanding the decisions they're making - and how those frameworks make them better or worse at understanding other players. Just the concept of "this player is my demon" is kind of psychologically thrilling, no? Lab monsters and people who really dig into the details of the game end up like poker players who always play by the odds; getting good at the game isn't understanding what the numbers tell you. Getting good at the game is understanding what the numbers tell both you and the other player - and there's no way of getting good enough, in a well designed game, that you can remove that other player from the equation. Sooner or later you simply have to make a call, and there's no guaranteed safety there.
4:00 its also misinputs fairly often, its important to register if your brain was right but your hands were wrong (or if your brain was wrong but your hands were right...)
"No one does that!" and with that, you've simultaneously just made all of my training partners start frothing at the mouth, while also putting a smile on my face.
Ive discovered that the healthiest thing for me in fighting games, is that when i guess wrong I say damn, good shit, and if my opponent guesses wrong i cackle like my house has chicken legs.
the worst feeling is thinking you finally guessed right, trying to take your turn, and getting drive reversaled right back onto your ass. But at that point, good on them for keeping me in the corner 👍
I never guess wrong, I always perfectly predict the most optimal and logical thing my opponent could do, they are just of so much lower skill that they cannot think of that option and do something else, so they catch me off guard and that's why I always lose
Fighting games are about finding a way to hit someone with the dumbest shit so don't take it to heart when the opponent uses meaty fireball within throwing distance.
One of the most important things to keep in mind imo is that humans in general have major positive and negative recency bias so it's easy to get stuck in habits long-term like getting yourself in a high-low situation and doing high 85% of the time: even layering simple things like cr.L throw, immediate throw, cr.L cr.L throw, run up TK option to beat throw tech, delay DP to beat the opponent's DP, and so on. None of those options are particularly complicated but that's already 5 different things your opponent has to think about, but it's also 5 things that you have to think about and keep track of as well which is why running drills can be really beneficial.
The "Accounting for risk-reward" part is what I struggle with the most, as I often come up with the worst scenarios possible not just in fighting games, but in daily life as well. However, objectively speaking, most people would not do something that might cost them the round (unless they don't know how punishable this option is), so that takes a few potential outcomes off the list. Then there are the options that just aren't that scary, so maybe playing around them isn't worth the mental stack. Knowing the difference between these two and the actual optimal options takes time, so not being too hard on yourself for guessing wrong AND doing your research when things do go bad is going to pay off in the long run.
Surprised you didnt mention the Diaphone clip where he had this as a channel point reward against a Gief with 1 HP who he guessed wrong against every single interaction.
The one game I ever got ok at, I realized the key was not winning 100% of my interactions, it was stepping back and asking myself “what interactions can I afford to lose”, deeply changed how I approached matchups. Of course, sometimes you will win 100% of your interactions and be heavily reward or vice versa, but such is the nature of the game :^)
I know some people in the fgc don't like comparisons to irl sports but it is really like that in a lot of competitive scenes. Fake outs and guesses akin to something like gambling.
I have the mysterious power of ALWAYS guessing wrong when I'm in a corner (in or out). Even when I try to switch my habits mid-match or even mid-pressure, it doesn't work. Pretty sure I constantly get matched against e-ESPers that somehow read my inputs before I even make them. Man, FGC is full of amazing beings...
I strive to some day be able to play like schizophrenic69, constantly making the most unhinged plays that will make my opponent think I have brain damage but getting away with it anyway
Somewhat related, but I used to think people responding to a question like "What do I do here?" with "Just don't be there" was just trolling, but it's really solid advice. It's all about maximizing your offense and minimizing what your opponent can do. If Millia can knock you down and then throw out the disc, your best option is to keep that from happening to avoid the mix-up. Rush her down or zone her out. Always stay out of range of her sweep. it won't always work, but it's a way better way of looking at it than just throwing your hands up and declaring the game is random.
I do ex dp on the opponents wakeup like 2 or 3 times a night I can only imagine their reaction as they jump or mash something only to get hit by ken ex dp 😂
This video is especially true for street fighter 6 because of how often the game forces you into aw dangit scenarios. Literally just land one normal into drive rush and it’s guessing time.
The worst version of this is when I (or an opponent) gets into a "gambling thing" mentality and just guesses instead of thinking about what the opponent's options are or what they are actually doing. Like a dope, I woke up lvl2 SA with gief trying to counter an Akuma meaty fireball. He backdashed out of range and never threw the fireball, and I thought "aw dangit". Then the Akuma DI'd straight into my lvl2 while it was still active and ate a jackhammer to lose the match. You can't DI a SA. Just a total brain fart by him and I have never felt so bad about stealing a win.
