This, unfortunately, is the era of uniformity and conformity. One would have thought that the exposure to diverse styles, philosophies, and ways of thinking and doing things via the internet would lead to the establishment of numerous schools of thought - in essence a multitude of virtual tribes with their own distinct cultures or subcultures.
This, however, is not the case. It seems the internet has caused people to gravitate towards a mean (a central) way of doing things, leaving the few who don't conform as outsiders, pariahs and iconoclasts of sorts.

My point simply was that the diffusion of the Internet affords people greater access to different styles and schools of thought, so why do most people gravitate towards a mean? That's all!!!
Yes, since TIME IMMEMORIAL, most people have exhibited group-think and hopped on bandwagons, with the exception of a few who rebelled and formed little clusters, schools of thought and subcultures, but - and this was my point - I would have thought the Internet would have led to the creation of way more rebels and iconoclasts, with the concomitant effect of an immense proliferation of these clusters of culture, these various ways of doing things, these virtual tribes.

Although, to answer your question, the internet certainly provides a new structure to socialisation, however, it doesn’t change the pre existing social dynamics. To be precise, I’m convinced it’s a mere communication tool which magnifies the human condition. So the pre-internet social dynamics are virtually envisaged on a greater scale in today’s society hence the OP’s comment.
