Yes James I agree with you on this .Because you buy one or a couple of albums of an artist you like you start buying their whole collection when sometimes you go overboard and buy stuff you don’t even like in the end. I really need to purge my collection!

I have 5-6 Bruce Cockburn, being in Canada he is an artist that was spun quite often on the radio here. A big Environmentalist, human rights activist, respected individual 🎶♥️

Interesting theme James. I kind of stopped being a completist years ago. But with that being said. I guess I would have to count any bands or artists who are still putting out new releases. In a roundabout way. That could be considered completing a band's discography too. If we are talking about a band like The Stones. Or even an artist like Miles Davis or Prince for instance. It gets pretty expensive to complete either one. Time to check in and see which ones you are trying to complete. Good to spend more time with you James. Free time has been tough as of late. Keeping up with everyone's new posts has been challenging~

Hi James; hope you having a fantastic Bank Holiday weekend 🤩🍿🙌🎸🎶 I’m like that with most artists/bands where it is challenging to be complete on a discography depending on how much output there is; but not to take away from the amount of sheer gold they brought to the table 👌 Dylan has released some excellent albums later on like ‘Tempest’; ‘Modern Times’ & ‘Rough & Rowdy Ways’; but for a long time I just go to his 60’s/70’s albums 😎🎸
Neil Young is a wonderful artist indeed mate; but I also find it challenging to be complete on his stuff; like Dylan; I mainly just go to his 70’s work; but he’s still done some terrific albums later on mate; ‘Psychedelic Pill’ from 2012 with Crazy Horse is absolutely fantastic 🙌 He was great live at Leeds Arena in 2016 and I was absolutely buzzing when I picked up ‘Time Fades Away’ at the Leeds Record Fair back in 2014 👌
Bruce Cockburn released some great albums too mate; I need to get back onto R.E.M’s latter stuff as I only got up to the ‘Monster’ album. I am mostly complete on Elbow & XTC’s work; I need to get the Costello albums I don’t owne on LP; I will say James; I definitely recommend ‘The Boy Named If’ album from 2022; definitely a throwback to his early material with the Attractions 😀👍

I cannot think of any that i would have tried to collect for decades (or long period of time). Every band that i have decided to buy everything, i have done so. However there have been a number of bands that for whatever reason, i have started to collect and then stopped and then after many many years i have bought all the missing ones. With those i cannot remember originally thinking that i must collect everything until the final years. Whitesnake is a good example of this; I cannot understand why i stopped buying their albums after only getting three albums. I loved those three. After about 20-25 years i finally bought all the rest. No bar one. Then there are bands that i wanted all albums up to a point. Paul Simon, i wanted to get all the albums up to Central Park Live(which was his then new release) and i did except for the Central Park and his first solo album which i conveniently forgot existed until it was reissued. I got the Live album a couple of years ago.

It's so hard to be completist, but I try. There are some (like Dylan) where I have a compulsive need to "have it all." There are others.
I made a conscious effort to grab the Thin Lizzy discography a while back and have been lucky. I have been able to find everything but the first one. I even have UK OGs of Blue Orphanage and Vagabonds. Those records seem to be harder to locate here in the States where Jailbreak runs rampant.
I love listening to Cockburn. Most of his songs are questioning instead of preachy, which I enjoy. I suppose there's not much ambiguity in wishing for a rocket launcher....
    Great video!

    Very interesting James 🤔
I'm also trying to complete my Stranglers album collection.
    There's plenty of other artists too.....Ian Dury/The Damned/Bad Manners/The Selecter/Gary Numan/The Who/Slade.
I've got all of the MADNESS studio albums but I'll never consider that collection complete until i get their Madstock live album.
I really need to make a list of what i need etc... and just stick to finding them.
Have a good bank holiday James 👍

Great idea for a vinyl video. I found it original and refreshing against so many “same, same” VC videos. I am a fiend for pursuing catalogue completions. I get frustrated when I’m having trouble finding that last one or two albums. Oh and to complete the Neil Young catalogue you are looking at 48 lps. I live in Canada and have all but four and that’s taken nearly 5 decades. Lol 😆

Great idea for a vid! I tend to oscillate between being completist and then thinking 'why don't I just get the good ones?'😅 A few artists come to mind- I'll never get all the Guided by Voices albums (100+) not that I ever see them in the wild. It's also impossible to find most of The Kinks from the 60s, even at high prices. Where are all the copies?? Price and scarcity are two different factors but The Kinks have both!

James, by coincidence I just got that Be Bop record this year and it completes my discography which I’ve had for awhile to be honest. Cockburn is so fantastic, and I’ve seriously overlooked him for so many years. I did see him in concert many years ago now, and he put on a great show and such a deep catalogue. I’ve also decided to try and collect his discography, which is easier here in Canada obviously. He’s found here in the cheapie bins all over. I’ve also had Palmer’s entire discography for years, great artist. Time Fades Away recorded in the studio?? You can only just shake your head and smile. Off the top of my head I am trying to complete my discography of Laura Nyro, Fred Neil, Tom Rush, Doug Sahm, Nazareth etc. I never buy online, only look for stuff out in the wild. So satisfying when you stumble across something at the right price and in good condition. Enough of my rabbiting on. Cheers.

    James,
I believe it was me that suggested/recommended you the "Best and the Rest of Be Bop Deluxe", glad you dipped for it at last and like it. Spooky tho', I played it last night, not knowing you had done a video about it. I not long ago replaced the copy I got in Boots in Lincoln in 1978. I always wanted one with a better sleeve as there was a printing error on my OG and it had a really distinct green hue not black back ground on the front.
The 2nd disc is not just outakes from Drastic Plastic, but includes none album tracks for other periods; "Lights" (1975), "Shine" (1976), "Japan" (1977), and "Blue As a Jewel" (1978). I seem to recall "Japan" getting good airplay upon release. Speed of the Wind is a great track in my opinion.
You need to seek out the 3LP expanded version "Live in the Air age", if for nothing else the wonderful "Mill Sreet Junction", which I seem to recall is on one of the BBC collections as well. How that did not get released at the time is one of life's great mysteries and may have reversed the bands fortunes and given them the break through track they needed at the time.
    Brgds.
    Russell

Apologies Russell...I wanted to namecheck you but I couldn't even remember which video you'd left the original comment on. Thanks for the info on those extra tracks, I searched and searched online for some info on them but came up empty. Great comp anyway, thanks for alerting me to it.

    Really interesting video idea James.
It took me a while too to find a copy of ' Time Fades Away'..love Journey Through The Past.
I think I'll keep on picking up Thin Lizzy
Albums bar Renegade and Thunder & Lightning ,as I wasn't keen on their final metal phase.
I guess the obvious artist for me is Roy Harper, for whom I now have all his studio and live albums up until 1985..I've then got his last 2 but those in-between records are particularly difficult to get but to be fair albums like Loony on the Bus and Burn the World aren't favourites and I won't go out of my way to acquire them.
I could easily fall down a Cure rabbit hole, or any number of alt 80s artists, but even then wouldn't probably be completist.
Interesting ' Best of the Rest' of Be Bop Deluxe, I'd never heard of that and sounds like an essential purchase, so will keep an eye out for that one.

Interesting James. I'm no longer interested in collecting entire discographies and happy to purge (even Floyd has started to go!). I'm in it for the music I enjoy most, so that's the key criteria for me these days. Artists I'm complete on currently are probably those who burned bright for a few albums and then disappeared, or new, smaller, artists I am following and support (financially). I realise the last category could soon become a contradiction...cheers Dale

    • @jamesgriffithsmusic
      @jamesgriffithsmusic  4 месяца назад

Hi Dale. Which Floyds have you been discarding? To be honest I could have gone a stage further into this video and made the point that you can be a completist with an artist and then at a later date start discarding the ones you don't want. But getting them all in the first place still seems important.

Eric Clapton is another. Bruce Cockburn was/is huge here owing to him being Canadian so I see his albums all the time. Hi James, good question. Could cheat and get overpriced reissues or substandard copies but where's the fun or challenge in that? I don't even have all the church albums and some of those are Megabucks or never put out on vinyl. I admit I'm not much of a completist and this stems from record shop days and following the pack of not getting the uncool, lesser acclaimed ones. Blame Q magazine.
