Through my research I actually found that most communities were quite small, less than 100 people. Even the larger settlements like Hedeby only had populations of around 2,000. As for the settlements themselves they were typically farm-based centers located next to a source of fresh water and composed of a few longhouses with associated outbuildings and fences for holding livestock. Walls typically protected the community with fields and further flung facilities beyond these. Stay tuned for more in our full episode.
