No one ever talks about Elantris (likely because it is so old now and Sanderson has written so much) but the romance was my favorite part. It was a key element in the plot yet the relationship developed slowly over time as both characters were trying to independently deal with their situations. Heaven knows I enjoy a steamy romance with a 'villain' from time to time but THIS one is the romance I would want in real life - intelligent characters that you can like and respect and relationship growth that is supported by words and actions and still had emotion if not steam.

I loved Yellowface. But that ending kicked me in the face. I understood i didn't need to take the book seriously, but the final plot twist was so cartoonish. The book explored a lot about heavy mental health topics: Impostor syndrom, anxiety disorder... And the premise about the polemic of a white author writing about a "asian" story is really interesting. So, with that use of themes, RF Kuang choose THAT ending? No, i can't, I can't.

The ve schwab note is actually super weird. It seems like vicious is more popular than anything else she does, at least on booktube. Shades of magic comes second, but also i didn’t hear anyone talk about the sequel series so… where are those folks hanging out online lol

I feel like the reason VE Schwab doesn’t get more attention is because, series aside, her books all feel quite different. You’re not getting a continuous universe or a certain type of fantasy the way you would with other authors. So you’ve got your Addie LaRue stans or your Shades of Magic people but they maybe don’t overlap as much as someone reading through the Cosmere or Realm of the Elderlings.

I've been a fan of Elise Kova since I picked up reading again. Her Air Awakens series renewed my love for fantasy and reading! But her books are definitely what I would consider steamy rather than spicy. Which is also how she describes them! I definitely think Married to Magic is a case of people expecting one thing and receiving another. I don't think they are her best works, but they were never meant to be either. She started the series during lockdown when she just wanted to write something with a guaranteed happy ending and was kind of cozy. So I think you're really spot on with saying it delves into cozy fantasy territory.

    • @ebnovels

I still need to try Air Awakens! And you know, I really appreciate you mentioning the steamy vs spicy-in the future, if I use that distinction to describe something, just know the credit goes to you! ❤

I adore her Air Awakens series, it also got me into reading! I've only read one of the married to magic books, and I definitely think it can be seen as a bit cheesy and cliche, but that's the fun of it. :)

Not to mention if the string instrument is a violin or close relative, if all the strings snap (or are removed) at the same time, the whole instrument risks collapsing. It's also dangerous if they all snap, since they're under really strong pressure. Ca. 50kg (100lbs) iirc, for a violin.
Just adding it in for the curious.

I had that "scare" with Warbreaker. For a while there it seemed like it was going in a dark romance type of situation and while I'll happily read the darkest smut if I choose to, if I go into a book expecting it to be PG and then encounter smut it's like a breach of consent. And because I'm mainly an audiobook reader it's a lot more...intense? Like a physical book you can scan over the page and just skip it, but with audiobooks, by the time you realise you want to skip over a scene it's already too late, you experienced it.
And I imagine this is the case for some people regarding romance overall.

I bought Yellowface last week after one of your videos, and ended up reading it last night in one sitting. I enjoyed it and was surprised to see it has 3.7 on Goodreads. She covers the very current topic of cancel culture well, how random people are quick to destroy someone online, without all the facts and disregarding that it's a real person with emotions on the other side.

I’m gonna say it because I felt it for years… BookTubers don’t really like female fantasy writers that much. Loads of them are oblivious to them, too. No matter the level success or storytelling mastery.
Seriously. It’s sad but it’s true.

    • @ebnovels

Hmm, I think certain pockets may find themselves gravitating toward more male centric fantasy. I find that tends to be true when people read a lot more classic fantasy, or at least that’s what I’ve noticed, since the genre was pretty male author dominate then. I have always wondered, though, if there could be a swap with Sanderson and Schwab, where they write books and then sold them by each other’s names without anyone knowing, how they’d be received? It’d be interesting to say the least, just to see what the difference might be

I haven't read Yumi yet, so I don't know to what degree it's a romance, but I honestly love Sanderson's take on romance in fantasy. Subtle or not, it's always super cute. Not sure what people are so surprised about, he has romance in every single book I've read so far. Susebron and Siri are my personal favorite, they read like a comedy shoujo manga and I kinda want more of it 😅

I picked up Immortal longings after a year of going back and forth- partially due to your recommendation. Really enjoyed it! definitely enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I havent read her previous works, definitely the adult sci fi fantasy non booktok reader that I definitely feel appeals to me as an audience. It didn't find its target audience which is a shame because I absolutely adored it :). the worldbuilding was great, and there was very little romance (especially since it was very romantasy markerted, which it is neither lol) and more political steampunk.

I think everyone can have issues that rub them the wrong way. For me, if it's a military genre (more specifically if it has a submarine, ICBMs, or a nuclear reactor), I'm very nit-picky about getting things right since I was in the nuclear machinist mate in the Navy who served about a ballistic missile sub.
I'm really very easy going on a lot of other things as long as there's some attempt at giving me a reason to ignore the disbelief.

That's not remotely like R&J, so what did they do to that story?

Married to Magic has just the right cover to be picked by me. Lush as you say, art-sy and fairytail-esc and the blurb does say lossely re-telling of Beauty and the Beast...just right my alle! So I bought the book. Paperback.
Writting was nice and cozy I do agree.
All boxes check for a good lovely book.
And then I hated the book....
The FMC is annoying. The Elf King deserves someone better than her.
If IF I were 15 years old I would sooo love this book. Sadly I don't have that brain any more.
    BUT I LOVE KOVA'S BOOK NR. 4 🙀💖
    .
    .
    .
She just talks about freedome [I applaud to that] and wines about her duty to the village people [ I roll my eyes].
Has anyone counted how many time she sad or thinks "duty". So annoying!
And will all that Duty Talk ahe never thinks about Elf Kingdom and how her power helps them.
And come ooon do FMC and MMC ever hold a conversation? And if they do you can't tell me just one talk and one steamy sceene is enought.
