@@101Volts There was not much change in the racism department for minstrel shoe depictions of Black Americans from the 20's to the 30's and really beyond that. But thank you for that info.
Yeah, they've been around forever. My grandfather used to sing on talent nights on the radio in the '20s. 1920's, that is. :) Wow. Dang that's almost 100 years ago.
No, that was us (the British) 😉 - along with most other American things (the language, Baseball, American "Football", apple pie, American-style pancakes which are actually Scottish, etc etc etc etc), television, film, radar, LCD display, the circuit board, touchscreen technology... damn there are a lot of things invented here
Did anybody else notice that all the other babies actually had a Tallent but the little black babies didn't ...they basically came on stage hurt themselves cried then was given watermelon ....that's just depressing
Mokie Cartoon no he means is it wasnt banned because it was racist and depicted black people in a negative manner, it was literally banned back then because it was 'integrated' (the theatre in the cartoon)
first of all betty boop was created in the 1930s anyone who doesn't believe that the racism of the period is not depicted in this and many other older cartoons are simply in denial.
Here's a theory... The baby isn't part of the show because... It could be the it has no special talent, but to me, it seems to be depicted simply as a younger and less coordinated baby than the others. And... Perhaps the baby was in the theater, but was being kept backstage because Betty is the mother, and she was busy being the emcee... Whenever it was crawling out onto the stage, the baby seemed to notice something, perk up, stand, and started rushing in that direction... The third time, the baby makes it onstage, and goes directly to Betty, who picks it up, and looks at it somewhat adoringly. Cartoons of that era were not made to entertain children. They were shown as shorts in movie theaters, before the main feature movie. They often contained references or innuendos that were too advanced or inappropriate for kids.
When the "triplets" sing this is a take on Al Jolson who sang in blackface, considered to be racist. This goes beyond merely a stereotype, and is a mockery of a group of people
I see exactly why this cartoon was banned. How come every baby up there did something and then black babies just crying. This messed up on so many levels. 😶
Well, this episode was full of racist jokes. But we gotta understand that those were different times, the ``politically Correct'' concept didn't even existed in those times, and obviously there was so much racism and misogyny, that's why this kind of cartoon episodes existed.
Obviously all of them had racial stereotypes, but the gimmick was that each baby’s talent was something that babies already normally do. The first baby beating on his food tray, the Russian baby jumping in the swing (which resembled a Russian dance), and the black babies crying but also singing Cab Calloway’s jazz songs, which kind of sounds like crying, lol.
WOW!!! My jaw REALLY hit the floor when they turned to the baby in the audience crying and his momma pulled out a BIG slice of watermelon...smh. Craziness
I thought it was VERY funny. That's how you get the attention of the viewer that doesn't really understand what racism is. Did your jaw literally make a clunk sound?? Nothing crazy about the cartoon, it did it's job and will continue to do so. Life is always in balance and coming out of balance. It will 'never' be tamed.
When I was 8 years old mom had a Betty Boop DVD collection and me being bored I was watching it and I seen this. I thought the black babies are supposed to be monkeys and when they bought the watermelon out for them I was thinking yo myself “don’t monkeys eat bananas though?” Then years later as I got older I realized that they weren’t monkeys but supposed to be black bows 😂
Lmao, I remember watching this very young. In the 80's on Channel 50 , they would play old cartoons, from betty boop, to popeye. I use to ask my mom why they had the black kids, or babies looking so crazy, she would just smile and say it was a different time honey, I was like 4, wtf did that mean 🤯😂Lol never realized how crazy the old shit was, until rewatching them now . Friendly reminder these old cartoons, even books, were made during a time where people had different mind sets. Its not right, but it was a different time.
I see that people are quite disturb about the stereotypes of black people. Unfortunately that how it was back in the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. If people goes to a live theater production, they use white people in "black-face" to play a black person. What you see in this cartoon happened in real life during that era. It was never considered racist. Look at the cartoon "The Family Guy". Some of the content comes off racist and homophobic but the cartoon is still running their episodes. I do want to thank all the people who are "non-black" for not agreeing of the content involving the "colorful three" of this video. It has shown that you guys believe that "All Lives" matter.
Family Guy takes shots at all groups, of course, but the one group that seems to get genuinely hateful treatment on that show is the Jews. I know that the cast, writers, and producers is comprised of large numbers of Jews, but there seems to be some real vitriol there.
All lives do, indeed, matter. If we can come together on that concept, the Elite (who are trying to divide us all) will lose and we will win in harmony.

True fact; Betty Boobs singing voice was based on an African-American woman named Esther Jones who real use to sing like that. A white woman STOLE her style and a lawsuit proved it! But that did not stop white people from capitalizing off of Black people.
+mike hurst And you obviously turn a blind eye to his point. Its ironic and funny that white Americans try so hard to oppress different races when they steal and use their identity because they wish so hard they could have came up with it in the first place lol.

Betty Boop is largely recognized as an iconic cartoon character and the first animated American sex symbol. However, her signature style and voice was appropriated by an African American jazz singer and entertainer - who many say was the original black Betty Boop named Esther Jones, The Original Betty Boop
My 4 inch Betty Boop figurine told me that she did not want to make this cartoon due to the racist overtones but that she was under contract to the Fleischer Brothers & had to do so to save her job. Betty had to undergo eight years of psychotherapy for doing this. The name of her psychiatrist was Dr. D. Lerious . Her psychologist was Ian Sayne.
Little did Betty know that, over 70 years later, she would inspire such a lively socio-political discussion. Mae Questel was the greatest!Madonna and Lady Gaga only wish they had as much talent.
@June What does "Star Wars" have to with racism? By the way, I still don't understand what is so controversial about that old cartoon. It's just a cartoon!
Yeah, hahaha, very different character role for Betty. It was great and just funny. The offended or uhmm, "triggered" people don't really experience life. I bet most of them are looking at their phones most of the time. A very sterile life experience.
All babies are drinking milk from the same bottle. 🍼It means they are siblings of the earth."Eating rice from the same pot"means a strong bond in Japanese.🍙
@lindaliriel Well, the watermelon itself isn't racist. It's the fact that throughout the cartoon, the black people are portrayed as unappealing, unsightly, rude disturbances to the show. Their designs are exaggerated to the point of barely looking human - whereas the white characters are cute and appealing. :/ You see what I mean?
Yes, even if they mock the black kids, they were included to the show, showing their "talents", the black mom with her son was in the audience and nobody from the seats said something about it , even at the final scene the black kids are sharing the bed with the other babies, and this is why this was banned, because it portrayed black people in too good light
I hated how the people who produce this change Betty Boop skin color when we all know Betty boop is black and was created by a black lady name Ester Jones
2 Cute a Charm I get this is like freaking late as hell, but Betty was never black. In the original first ever showing of her, she was white, and was fatter. As inspired by Helen Kane. They drew inspiration from both. Even if helen did steal ester act. So again, Betty was never black.
C'mon, if they showed and Italian eating pasta and meatballs should I get offended as an Italian American???? We all have special traits and customs, that's what makes us unique! Get over it!
Isn't it weird how they made an Asian stereotype but then made an entire short dedicated to [presumably] Japanese people with the song in the short managing to be perfectly translated into Japanese?
I will always adore Betty, she’s so cute! ❤️ the racism was just something of the normal back then, we can’t deny history. Enjoy the cartoon! Boop is a classic!!
dude , you literally think racism is ok? sure , betty boop is a huge icon and she is amazing! but that doesnt mean you should defend racism? like wth dude.
I´ve watched some cartoon saying they were racist because the black people eat watermelon? I dont even understand this in the first place... I eat watermelon too and Im from panama
After dealing with the minor crap that shows get banned for nowadays, I was paying extra close attention to see, and the thoughts going through my head were somewhat like: "Could it be the song lyrics? No.....Russian dance maybe? Oh, colourful three, I bet this is it......Oh...OOHHHHH my Christ...." They really dont fuck around with the whole racism lark
Betty Boop cartoons are a lot less racist than mainstream Hollywood for most of the last century. The very existence of black people was just left out of most movies.
oh wow, I’ve seen this one before but never seen the black babies one. I guess they cut it out, plus, it’s a cartoon from the past, most of them were racist 🤷♂️
wow you only have to look at the difference in illustration to see that white people are depicted better than black people in this cartoon. people need to stop being so ignorant of racism and stop asking 'how was it racist'. for me its not even the watermelon thing that is the worst but its the way the black people are made to look so different to the other people.
Next time you see a group of them in public acting extremely different, on purpose, to get attention, what kind of acrobatic narrative will you weave in your miserable head in order to try to spin it as other than what it is, so that you won't have to come face to face with your own 'racist' sense of reality ?
Oh yeah like they didn't make all the kids look silly. What about the white baby chasing the bottle of milk? I guess 'that's ok because the kid was white? You're the racist because you see this 'difference' just because of race of the kids, when in reality there was equal treatment of them all.
@lilmixedperson there is humour in this like all edgy racial humour, i mean south park and shows like that depict simular ideas about other races, but do it with irony. This is simply outright racism. It doesn't mock ideas of racial stereotyping, it doesn't question it, it is just solid, brainwashed and brainwashing racism.
Not only is the racism in this cartoon terrible, just the whole idea of having the babies do these routines on demand is exploitive to say the least. Think about it it could be seen as problematic
Cartoons of that time were meant to be funny, to be gags. The generation of people now 2015+ are becoming waaaaay to "triggered" about stuff. I suggest you spend some time in wildlife, and explore what monkeys, lions and whales do - and I do NOT mean by looking at screen but in person experience it. You'll notice they're not tame and you'll probably pee your panties at what they do to live...and if intruders are noticed. That's raw life. You cannot tame life. I'm not racist, but these cartoons are funny. Would someone actually do these things will babies? Nooo..!!
Yeah, you're right, but people were dumber about a lot of stuff back then. This was back when Flintstones advertised Winston cigarettes on TV and no one cared, but you weren't allowed to show toilets or married people sleeping in the same bed (scandalous!) Back when it was acceptable for kids to hitchhike and washing your hands wasn't as widespread. Don't get me wrong, not everything about the past was bad, but there's a lot of stuff that gets glossed over or romanticized. Watching these cartoons can be kind of like looking into the minds of cavemen. It's so strange how much has changed in just a few decades.
@@dagnytheartist "Yeah, you're right, but people were dumber about a lot of stuff back then." Your ignorance of the past is amazingly high, yet you comment as though you know something about it. Times haven't changed as much as you think they have. "This was back when Flintstones advertised Winston cigarettes on TV and no one cared, but you weren't allowed to show toilets or married people sleeping in the same bed (scandalous)!" Cigarette companies knew how dangerous their products were..and ARE very aware of it but when big money goes around, a lot of things are accomplished that can "seem" dumb". Organized (cult) religions were and still are in charge of a lot of things shown on TV. They wanted to keep a 'wholesome' view of life active. In some ways, TV and movies have become really perverted with profanity and sexual views. Not much is left to think mind to figure anything out, creativity is becoming less. Now-a-days kids use F-bombs any time they choose to and think nothing of it. Not that I promote Christianity because it's the worst offender of censorship and hypocrisy, but respect is taking a deep dive and now shows so much to others, or of self. I see it a lot where I live, and when I watch world news. Big money shouldn't rule the airwaves, but at that time, it sure did. "Back when it was acceptable for kids to hitchhike and washing your hands wasn't as widespread." You're filled with a lot of misinformation. Yes, there were some hitchhikers, and I was one of them. A lot of people used good sense when doing it, but of course there were those that didn't and then connected with people who had some Other Ideas. Those Other Ideas are not new. Back in those days people were a lot more friendly and outgoing. You didn't have the moronic "Stranger Danger" thing. People generally did use common sense, which today..isn't very common. Cellphone usage is WAY up, and intelligence because of that is taking a dive. "Don't get me wrong, not everything about the past was bad, but there's a lot of stuff that gets glossed over or romanticized. Watching these cartoons can be kind of like looking into the minds of cavemen. It's so strange how much has changed in just a few decades." Cavemen?? You don't really have a deep appreciation for the past with that comment. Try times before black and white TV, try times before Radio. As my Mother has said, and so did my Grandmother, back in those times you HAD to use your mind, and your intuition (not to be confused with 'instincts') - not like today where so many are relying on cellphones...and the much younger generation is not very adept at communicating in person as we were. So, there is a decline in intelligence and interactions, and you call the past "caveman"...well, Gen Y and Z are being called anti-social, the very thing that helps humanity thrive. Church is losing people, and that's a VERY good thing, while atheism is on the rise, and that's NOT a good thing. People were a lot more in-tune with animals, and the planet, but that has changed due to video games being heavily on the rise, while the planet is going through massive changes. I adore 2022, computers and animals...stepping totally away from computers and mixing with nature AND people at times. When balance is way off (everything), affects become very evident.
@rotoscoop I agree. It was just the way things were back in the 20s and 30s. Attitudes were very different then and people just need to calm down with the whole racism thing.

Mae Questel was the greatest!Madonna and Lady Gaga only wish they had as much talent.
3:19 you came for
There is no sense in overreacting! It is merely a cartoon.
@June What does "Star Wars" have to with racism? By the way, I still don't understand what is so controversial about that old cartoon. It's just a cartoon!
Betty Boop hosting a talent show for little kids.🤩🤩🤩❤❤❤
What the fuck
you don't see a problem with this?
Yeah, hahaha, very different character role for Betty. It was great and just funny. The offended or uhmm, "triggered" people don't really experience life. I bet most of them are looking at their phones most of the time. A very sterile life experience.

Betty boop was definitely not based off a black woman with this shit in the show fr
I love how there's ads before this lmao

Why does it always have to be the Watermelon! 😂
0 to racist as fuck real quick
generic u can get ur point across, w/o the use of your filthy language 😢
@lindaliriel Well, the watermelon itself isn't racist. It's the fact that throughout the cartoon, the black people are portrayed as unappealing, unsightly, rude disturbances to the show. Their designs are exaggerated to the point of barely looking human - whereas the white characters are cute and appealing. :/ You see what I mean?
It's amazingly inclusive for the time.
Yes, even if they mock the black kids, they were included to the show, showing their "talents", the black mom with her son was in the audience and nobody from the seats said something about it , even at the final scene the black kids are sharing the bed with the other babies, and this is why this was banned, because it portrayed black people in too good light
@@jonal5126 Right! It wasn't banned for a modern idea of "racist depictions" it was banned because it included everyone!
I hated how the people who produce this change Betty Boop skin color when we all know Betty boop is black and was created by a black lady name Ester Jones
2 Cute a Charm No her looks were inspired by Helen Kane... her singing style in the other hand was stolen from Esther Jones
Blame the Jews who made thisn
2 Cute a Charm I get this is like freaking late as hell, but Betty was never black. In the original first ever showing of her, she was white, and was fatter. As inspired by Helen Kane. They drew inspiration from both. Even if helen did steal ester act. So again, Betty was never black.
C'mon, if they showed and Italian eating pasta and meatballs should I get offended as an Italian American???? We all have special traits and customs, that's what makes us unique! Get over it!
Betty is multicultural & she's not a hater. I think she would be fun to hang out with. She always leaves me smiling.
I think it plays on the Asian stereotype that they always do weird shit, but do it masterly.
The first baby comes out to the battle hyme of the confederacy
aww, the baby that crawls on stage with the bottle on a string is soo cute!!
Isn't it weird how they made an Asian stereotype but then made an entire short dedicated to [presumably] Japanese people with the song in the short managing to be perfectly translated into Japanese?

No one one is saying anything about that
I remember a long cartoon, at the begining Betty is a baby sitter, and prepares this show. Thanks friends.

This isnt banned! I have it on DVD!
It's banned on television 😐
Some episodes were banned back then due to "moral", some are banned now due to "political correctness", every era has it's own fake values
After dealing with the minor crap that shows get banned for nowadays, I was paying extra close attention to see, and the thoughts going through my head were somewhat like:
"Could it be the song lyrics? No.....Russian dance maybe? Oh, colourful three, I bet this is it......Oh...OOHHHHH my Christ...."
They really dont fuck around with the whole racism lark
Betty Boop cartoons are a lot less racist than mainstream Hollywood for most of the last century. The very existence of black people was just left out of most movies.
That's true Simon, that's why I longer watch TV or go to the movies. The history of segregation is repeating itself in the movies.
Hey alex scancez what ever is it i dont get it am 11 like what

oh wow, I’ve seen this one before but never seen the black babies one. I guess they cut it out, plus, it’s a cartoon from the past, most of them were racist 🤷♂️
Guys this was made back when racism was the norm, its obviously gonna be racist, no need to point it out
3:03 that startled me so much
wow you only have to look at the difference in illustration to see that white people are depicted better than black people in this cartoon. people need to stop being so ignorant of racism and stop asking 'how was it racist'. for me its not even the watermelon thing that is the worst but its the way the black people are made to look so different to the other people.
It’s scary that it’s almost 100 years later and people are still justifying this
more than horrible I think it was really not funny
@lilmixedperson there is humour in this like all edgy racial humour, i mean south park and shows like that depict simular ideas about other races, but do it with irony. This is simply outright racism. It doesn't mock ideas of racial stereotyping, it doesn't question it, it is just solid, brainwashed and brainwashing racism.
Time to piss on Max's grave...
This was hilarious
This was racist for many reasons.
Smd
This is literally racist
_And the fact that they are fighting and they are also crying bc they ran out of watermelon. And "the colorful three"_
Not only is the racism in this cartoon terrible, just the whole idea of having the babies do these routines on demand is exploitive to say the least. Think about it it could be seen as problematic
The last set were the Dionne Quintuplets, which were a real phenomenon at the time. The whole cartoon is based on that gag..
"Exploitative"? You DO know these are cartoons, right? As in "not people"? Or do you think Bugs Bunny exploited bunnies too ?
@@dagnytheartist "Yeah, you're right, but people were dumber about a lot of stuff back then."
Your ignorance of the past is amazingly high, yet you comment as though you know something about it. Times haven't changed as much as you think they have.
"This was back when Flintstones advertised Winston cigarettes on TV and no one cared, but you weren't allowed to show toilets or married people sleeping in the same bed (scandalous)!"
Cigarette companies knew how dangerous their products were..and ARE very aware of it but when big money goes around, a lot of things are accomplished that can "seem" dumb".
"Back when it was acceptable for kids to hitchhike and washing your hands wasn't as widespread."
You're filled with a lot of misinformation.
It's so strange how much has changed in just a few decades."
Cavemen??
