I just bought a broken and repaired piece of pottery that had been in two separate museum collections. I felt if it waa good enough for them, then it was good enough for me. Another good show.
Amen. This is the way to collect! Buy what you like and can afford. Wear and tear we call "a fine patina of age." Thank you for sharing your excellent collection with us.
Hi Peter, You say you are not able to carve things, but that's just because you haven't put in your 10,000 hours. I think most talent is acquired, not innate. Great collection. A thoroughly enjoyable video. I especially like that Republican brush-pot.
I love objects like these, if I had the money, I would visit estate sales and auctions. Thank you Peter. Please keep collecting and sharing your knowledge.
I love your collection and purpose behind collecting. It really reasonates with me. I buy a lot of high quality ivory carvings whenever I come across one because I feel it is so unappreciated! And because you cant sell it, I always get it at a great price!
Thank you for sharing! I agree that a slight amount of damage does not necessarily detract from the beauty of a piece. I think of the Japanese repaired ceramic bowls. Often the colored metal lacquer makes them even more beautiful!
Mr. Combs , I follow you from Belgium. Very much enjoyed your personal collection showing, and encouraged to seek out high quality carving, orphaned and neglected by the trade
Fun to see you talk through some of your collection. Can you say something about the rug you have on the tabletop. The objects look beautiful on this textile. I like wrecked beautiful ancient things, and have some wonderful Buddhist objects, including woodcarvings. Root carving is amazing!
Great presentation Peter! I've frequently thought about what you might 'collect.' During your weekly videos I'm always trying to see what's around the room :) Cheers!
Love your Ivory collection Peter. It's interesting with European auction houses recently selling s lot of ivory. Same here in Australia with price's being strong with collectors.
Spectacular collection Peter! That root carving though… Creepy as Fk!!! Would not let that thing in my house. Please do a Furniture tour next, can see some interesting pieces in your house. Also at one stage would like to see some art and silks. Great video thanks again
21:26 I have a mirrored pair of almost identitcal (albeit much smaller) carvings that I got for 25 usd a couple of years ago, nice to hear that they most likely are late Qing!
I saw a similar Peking glass seal sample in bonhams auction house, for the Bi.disk, I can't recall any examples. Thats why I saw massive ivory carvings in the auction
Nice sharing some of your stuff. I think many (older viewers with vertigo) would appreciate if your got a gimbal for your phone to avoid the shakes. I couldn't watch more than a few minutes at a time because it gives me a spinning headache.
I can't understand why carvings can be so underpriced either... Looking on the bright side: my collection has benefitted and I share your passion for carving. Regarding animal teeth or horns, I'm of the opinion that it became unfair, and should thus be illegal, from the moment that guns are used, it's earned with risk and a fairer fight until you bring guns into it, so anyway, that's my policy! Please allow me to again convey my thanks for your impeccable knowledge, generously shared. All the Best for the future. 🇬🇧 🇺🇸
Thank you Mr. Combs, I hope you will forgive me for saying this but I think art is a bad investment.... Unless you consider the dividend of the pleasure of ownership, how living with art makes life so much better. I collect ceramics because I am a sculptor and a ceramicist, and so I love living with the product of the artist of the past, it is instructive on so many levels. I'm afraid that there is an argument to be made against the sale of antique ivory, as you know better than most once a market heats up the forgers will be all over it, and that would raise demand for new ivory to make modern copies of old forms. I'm not saying that the trade should be banned I'm just saying that there is a danger. Be well.
Nice rugs too!!😀👍
That ivory box is utterly incredible

I love the Ersari Turkmen piece ❤
Love wood and stone carving, but when I see ivory, all I see is the murder of a majestic animal.
