This video will introduce the freshest way to eat your fish, also known as “ikejime.” It involves the insertion of a spike quickly and directly into the hindbrain, causing immediate brain death Destroying the brain and the spinal cord of the fish will prevent reflex action from happening. This will help you making your fish fresher and more delicious. It could look cruel, but this method is considered to be the fastest and most humane method of killing fish (Fish welfare and quality as affected by pre-slaughter and slaughter management. Aquaculture International 13: 29-49).
Thank you for watching my video!
#Ikejime #StripedBass #Striper
Brains like we do have nerve tubes/canals that lead in our whole body, destroying the brain, organ loses function having no command to do which why nerves go down, and that’s why we can’t feel the pain. Although a human would die instantly, but the heart will beat for few times. Just imagine using this method on fish and a bullet that goes through humans brain( let’s hope that this doesn’t happen to everyone) We go down, having no connections to nerves to do an action.
Same goes for fish or any other animal. I hope you read my comment and understand why is this the humane way of killing the fish.
Vaso very accurate. Many people dont read my explanations ;(
Thank you so much for your comment and watching my video!
KACA Life No problem!
Vaso
funny enough, since their brain is a simple structure, it could be that you just merely messed up its ability to control its body, as you can’t actually be sure each, and every time. So as you gut it, cut it’s head off, your just killing it normally, with an added affect of it being a vegetable inside it’s own body before it died.
So extra horror to the fish by your hands lol
The don’t have souls
Nonsense. It's akin to lobotomy, it occasionally caused paralysis and many things.
Ikejime do not guarantee dead brain. Stick with club, it's many times more humane than this so-called "ikijame."
Demonstration with high quality footage and explanation. Good video
Thank you very much. I am glad it was helpful.
Just a reminder that you clicked on the video knowing that a fish was going to get killed so don’t go crying in the comment section
Yea, idiots don’t know what they are talking about, Ike Jime is the way to go, better fish, more humane, cmon it’s obvious, great video brother and good luck out on the water!
Thank you so much for watching my video and your comment!
Yeah.. Many people dont know what is going on in the video and try to read what I wrote :(
Takes too long, and if you catch a bunch of fish and you have to fillet them yourself, this is honestly too much of a hassle. Besides, id say this is a lot more brutal and inefficient than simply thunking the fish on the noggin, killing it instantly.
This process is interesting. It's new to me. We have an immediate kill law here in Maine. I'll try it on the next legal striper I catch. They have to be at least 28 inches to keep here.
That is a great law! I hope more fishermen do that with fish. Wow. In CA, they have to be 18 inches or bigger in saltwater. And, many lakes like this in the video has no size limit on stripers. Love to hear how your experience of ikejime goes !! Tight Lines!
Thank you very much for watching my video!
I like that you did it the last way at the end because people can see the effect, clearly it’s much more active than ikejime so hopefully people will see the hard way what happens when you speak about something you know nothing about, cool vid 👍🏼
Edit: to clarify I’m saying these people who say to do it regular have no clue what they’re talking about, and you doing it the standard way is showing that clearly they’re wrong
Yeah. Many people dont understand what this method is all about. THank you so much for your comment and watching my video!
can i use any kind of wire or it must be a wire specifically made for ikejime?
Anything that has some straightness works well! In this video, I use a plant to do ikejime: ruclips.net/video/SMd0LYEeDd0/видео.html
As explained before on a separate video, this method has been used for thousands of years as it was discovered to improve the flavor of fish because the fish goes through less pain and stress using this method than the traditional method used by many companies today, which is throwing fish into an ice box and have them suffocate to death which could take up to five minutes to a few hours.
@@MrNormal593 might want to cut out the sarcastic ‘oh ok’, that easily makes you sound 60 years old, maybe at least 50. As said, the ancient Japanese have been skewering fish brains since about 500 BC. Pretty interesting stuff.
I witnessed this from a far.
😂😂
Sponge Bob ptsd BTW
Listen to that old Krabs, stay away from hooks
I've been doing ikejime since I was 7😂🤣.....I used to do that to my fish not knowing that I'm performing ikejime😂🤣
Wow. You have been doing a right thing :)
Thank you for watching my video!
So you basically invented it, though it had already been invented. Happened to me with Latte Coffee.
This video helped a lot. Where did you get your ikijime kit? I can’t seem to find one with a wire, only the spike. Thanks
Nice videos. I ordered the tool from Japan a couple weeks ago. I read that the best way to find the brain is to enter between and right above the eyes and point the spike at the end of the lateral line for most fish. Does this sound correct to you? Also if you successfully spike the brain is there still a chance the wire will go into the muscle instead of the spinal column or does the skull always guide the wire in correctly? I am going bluefin fishing in a few weeks and worry about pushing a wire into the loins. I’ve only done the brain spiking before but never the wire but want to try this time if I catch one. Also for large bft that are longer than 4 or 5 ft, I was thinking about using 80lb flouro instead. Do you think that would work? Thanks for the videos they are helpful.
Yes, that is very accurate. Yes there is still a chance that the wire will go into the muscle. The fish will show an intense reaction when you insert the wire correctly! it would work, but using a thicker wire for blue fin tunas will be better :)
Thank you very much for watching my video!
KACA Life I’ll also have 200lb flouro. Would that fit? I think it’s like 1.2 mm. Or maybe I should get some wire (all assuming I can land one)
Nelson Sun yes. That will work better. You will catch them for sure :)
KACA Life I see titanium nickel leader apparently works well since it retains its straightness. Maybe I’ll try 45 lb wire leader?
@@nelsonsun4952 That will work too! anything that has some straightness works!
Thank you I was looking to catch something to use in my garden for my pepper plants but didn't want it to suffer for long. I've usually just done catch and release. This was very helpful!
Fish lobotomy
I watched an entire ike jime playlist from this Korean fellow, and he pointed out that you know you hit the brain when the fish suddenly dilates its pupils and opens its mouth wide. (In the examples you show, it doesn't appear that this is happening in the fish you process.)
He doesn't just stab the fish, he also stirs the spike around to scramble the brain. Also, for rapidly bleeding out the fish and to remove the spinal column, he uses a Japanese water pressure based tool that squirts a stream of water into the nerve chanel, which pushes the entire spinal cord out the hole he poked in the brain in a second, then he squirts a stream of water into the artery under the fish spine, rapidly draining the fish of blood. This tool he uses seems to me to be a faster and more thorough way of doing the spinal cord neutralizing and the blood removal.
Take a look:
ruclips.net/p/PLeBseaOtVDZJu_KX4xNLFUjJsn1-DHuT3
Thank you for posting this!! I really appreciate you demonstrating ikejime multiple times for us, very clearly and showing where exactly to drive the spike. I recently learned about ikejime and felt terrible that I’ve been killing fish wrong my whole life. I wasn’t sure how to do ikejime properly and I will not be fishing until I can figure it out! I’m going to order one of these kits right now. Thank you!!!
I hope more people do this method :) It is the least painful method for fish! You dont need to feel terrible! Now, you know!!! Let me know you have any questions. Thank you very much for your lovely comment and watching my video :)
This just looks more sadistic extends the process of dying even more. Driving spikes through the brain, bleeding it, then crushing the spine? Thats more humane than a quick hit on the head? Just kill it quick and be done with it.
Bro it’s very noble of you to go to basically every comment and make sure people know they should damage the brain at least. Btw I’m trying to catch my first fish tmmrw would damaging the brain and doing the wire thing with a chopstick work as well?
I think completely obliterating the brain immediately, is the most humane way if you are going to eat it or use as bait. Don't use live bait it's cruel, what if you were the fish and you had no way of telling humans how it really feels?
So thats why i keep finding holes in their heads
lol you must be rich to afford and keep eating these fish
@@stew880 what are you talking about? You don’t need expensive equipment and these things will bite almost anything.
Honestly writing, this is inhumane and brutal. Fro when the needle is inserted, the fish does not die immediately, it dies a painful and slow death.
Does this work with smaller fish too? (Like sunfish and such). Or is there another method for them?
It may sound inhumane but I usually just throw smaller fish on the ground, kills them instantly
This works for every fish!
It works too, but it is just knocking them out. And, it is not precise. This method is more precise, but both work :)
@@Opaleye for smaller fish, would it make sense to just brain them and then clean them using a traditional method.
@@hawkstrat9105 Yes, I agree. I would just damage their brains to make them painless and not worry about the wiring process.
I think you missed the brain, it shouldn't be gasping like that. For striped bass, it's right above the gill plate
You know the wire can slide through the ice pick, right?
So you still cut the neck even after Ike Jime??
I don’t fish. Just wanted to see a fish getting stabbed in the eye.
Just discovered this method, trying to determine which size (gauge;mm) wire I will need, your video helped my understanding, are u using the 1.2mm wire (circuit breaker) that came with the magenta colored handle on that striper?
I saw elsewhere that a slit was cut at the tail too to facilitate the bleeding.
Can we just not kill the fish
No they taste good.
So, you'll know when you insert the rod through the spine from the head when they have that reflex? Also, I noticed the fish straighten out as well. That's another sign? Basically you have to "feel" for it?
Ikejime translates to the words
“Brain Spike”
B if you didn’t know, you know you hit the fish’s brain when it’s fins stiffen up, and the mouth widens.
True! Most of the times!
Opaleye 👍🏻
@@Opaleye
Not most of the times...
If you succeed the fish's mouth open 100% of the time.
It doesn't open but it stops moving. That means the brain is still alive and you're torturing it. That's the common sense knowledge for professional sushi chef which was also on youtube. So in that case, you have to keep stabbing and search for the brain until the mouth opens which is torture...
Again, unless it's already dead, the mouth would open 100% of the time.
@@gjrloiouyfchicfhhudrgky3470 I disagree. I see some species close their mouth instead. But, most of fish open their mouth.
@@Opaleye
What species? All the typical edible fishes opens their mouth when you succeed destroying their brain, so that's the first time I've heard that.

So is knocking it out first before bleeding it out less effective on pain or bleeding it out?
actually, knocking it out is less effective on both compared to this method.
@@Opaleye thx.I'm assuming that clubbing the fish in the noggin doesn't knock it out somehow or does not desensitize it then?
@@zz-np2sr It usually does not kill the fish. It just makes it unconscious for a period of time.
@@zz-np2sr Also, the wire makes the fish immobile while its heart still beats for several minutes to pump out the blood. Without that, fish will move violently, which could possibly ruin its blood vessels inside the fish.
@@Opaleye Okay thx, that was the answer I needed.

It’s the same. I’ve used a knife to do ikejime many times and it works just as well as a spike.
@@gooddoggo2258 I always use a knife. But not sure if it can be called ikejime as we just hit the brain and not the spinal cord ?

Does the position of the brain vary depending on the type fish? I’ve viewed an app showing the positions of the brain depending on the type for purpose of this method. I don’t want to miss the brain and do more harm than good.
yeah that is right

how do you know where the spinal cord is? I mean where to insert the wire. Can you feel it or is it always the same spot where you also kill the fish?

For those searching for the right tools. You can use a long thin T-shape screwdriver and a long steel wire from any hardware store instead.
Even if they don't feel pain it is sad if a helpless creature dies
उनको दुःख नहीं लकता है फिर भी यह नहीं करना चाईए क्यूकी जब कोइ मरता टा है तो हम को दुःख लगता है ।
So... What do u want then? Do you want people to stop eating animals? Jeez don't be so picky
How do you know that fish doesn't agonise?
How do they know they are hitting the spinal cord what if they are just hitting the flesh ?
When it goes in smoothly, you know you inserted it correctly. Also, fish will show a reflex response.
You can also cut the tail and go in that way then you can actually see the spinal column (you should go down the small hole towards the top of the spine and not through the middle)
Thank you for this video, I may think of implementing this into my own fishing techniques
I am so happy to hear that!!
Thank you so much for doing that and watching my video! :)
Where was this caught?
Castaic lake!
How does this compare to beheading the fish?
Decapitation is also deemed humane as long as it is followed by pithing, which is the destruction of the brain. After decapitation, insert a probe into the head and swish it around to destroy the central nervous system. Similar to a lobotomy, pithing is done because, unlike mammals, fish can remain conscious after decapitation due to their unique physiology (Pauline Chen and Daniela Sharma, Ph.D. - Rutgers University)

Great video! I’m new to fishing and ikejime and have a couple of questions:
1. Is it safe to let fish bleed out in muddy lake water or do you need to use water suitable for drinking?
2. If fishing for a day and killing with ikejime immediately after catch, putting fish in ice slurry and filleting 8 to 12 hours later once getting home do you need to gut the fish before putting in ice slurry?
so you just show them the matrix
nice video. i liked the way you killed because some people dont do the brain thing and kill the fish with pain
Thank you Teenja!! I totally agree!
I think those fish deserve that kind of painless death. They are dying to be served on our tables! I dont criticize people eating fish, but at least, we should not torture them to death!
Thank you for watching my video!
You might be missing the brain with the spike. My fish usually opens mouth wide when brain dead. I also go from the tail, easier to get the neural canal
both ways work.
You let the poor thing suffocate for a long time. It shouldn't take but 5 seconds after removing it from the water to do what you did.

tip: If you want to kill a fish without inserting a bullet or knife into it - put it in a bucket of clean water and add a few drops of clove oil at a time - this is actually more humane than even ikejime but clove oil is expensive and this method is usually used for pet fish :/

Your frigging putting a nail in the fishes forehead
That looks like it hurts.
I know you think that this is the "humane" way of killing a fish but the fact of the matter is that fish have extremely different brains than we or other mammals do. First off fish lack a neocortex which is what produces conciousness in mammals. They also lack the nerve structure to feel pain. So while it might make sense to kill the fish quickly for convenience, it doesn't really make it "humane" because it's highly unlikely that the fish is suffering as a human or mammal would. And I'm not trying to sound cruel, but as a fisherman I've done a ton of research on this. Check out Dr. James Rose's papers for more info. Tight lines!
It was an old idea that fish dont feel pain. And, recently, many scientists have done some experiments that support the idea that they do feel pain. Myself is a scientist who have done years of research on the nervous system. I have done alot of reading on this topic as well. Also, this method would be helpful if fish do feel pain. On the other hand, it would not harm any even if they dont. Thank you so much for watching my video and writing your comment :) Tight lines to you too!
@@Opaleye Another thing to consider is how fish behave after being hooked. Think about it, if you got hooked in the mouth it would hurt like hell and you probably wouldn't be thinking about eating. But there's many cases of fish breaking the line and then being caught again within minutes with the hook still in their mouths. I've had this happen myself a few times with largemouth and bluefish. Also had another time when I caught a striper with an ice pick sticking out of its anal vent. When I see things like that it makes me very skeptical that fish experience conscious pain like humans or mammals would
@@GREEKgangsta15 I dont think we have the same definition of pain here. Your definition seems like the pain that we, humans, feel. I do believe that fish feel pain, but I dont think that is the pain that humans feel. You cant assume that they would feel their pain in the way we do.
@@Opaleye Sorry I don't want to get in a debate or anything. Just as an animal lover but also an avid fisherman, I would hate to deliberately do anything that would cause suffering to any creature. However there's a difference between what we know as "pain" and something called nociception which is basically injury stimuli. Even bacteria and microorganisms experience nociception. But conscious suffering is a WHOLE other matter. Pain and fear are conscious states that humans and other mammals experience because of our large neocortex. Fish don't have this part of the brain so it's very unlikely that they possess the consciousness necessary to "feel" anything. Most of a fishes behavior (including reactions to being hooked/handled) could very well be attributed to unconscious learning aka instinct
@@GREEKgangsta15 No worries. I like educational conversations like this. I do agree that fish dont feel the pain like we do. But, I think stress is a type of pain although it does not directly injure fish. Also, whether they feel pain or not, I believe that this method has no harms, but benefits.
Thank you again for your comments and time :)

Sorry but the fish looked like it felt it and the fish look to healthy to even be killed... This is just catch kill and eat there is nothing Humaine about this
It is true that the fish is getting killed in the video. However, there are different methods of killing a fish. This method kills the fish instantly preventing the fish from a long pain
As a fisherman ... a little critical .... the video claims a humane way .. but you mean for the best meat really? I'll give you the best meat thing.... I'm sure it's tasty.
But humane? Fish appears at 0:23 .... and it takes 47 seconds, arranging yourself and mucking about with the fish to put the needle in? And you don't finish for another 45 seconds, so 1.5 minutes?
2 smacks on the head (instantly dead), gut and clean takes 10 seconds at the most?
Hello, I am a fisherman, but also a scientist. I dont think you understood the video correctly. The process with a wire has nothing to do with its pain. Damaging its brain with a spike is what makes fish unable to feel pain, which takes a few seconds. Thank you.
@@Opaleye Hi there. I don't doubt that. And I'm sure the meat tastes great. If I catch a fish I'm going to eat, I pick it out the water , destroy the brain, gut and clean immediately, quickly like 10 seconds, as humane as it gets I suppose. Fresher the better. All this stuff about lactic acid building in the blood starts the moment it's caught and dragged out of it's environment. It worries me because in the West this is becoming trendy and ritual thing. People are of the mind it doesn't matter what you do to the poor thing before it's death but this ritual somehow makes it better and guilt free. Ikejime kits ebay £22? Just don't muck about, kill them quick, minimal handling.
I'm a scientist as well, a biologist actually, and mathematics.
@@black5f Yeah the wiring process makes its meat better. People are doing it to minimize the amount of lactic acid produced. Even if you "destroy the brain, gut and clean immediately," fish won't stop moving for a while, leading to the production of lactic acid.

Must be the most humane way to kill a fish, but releasing it to prevent overfishing would be even better! Stripper Bass are slow growing fish so it takes years for a female to grow until it can breed more fish to keep stocks on a healthy levels.
That is true! But, it is a bit different in lakes compared to ocean. It is a bit abundant in lakes. That is why you can take up to 10 stripers per person from that lake.
