    This video will introduce the freshest way to eat your fish, also known as “ikejime.” It involves the insertion of a spike quickly and directly into the hindbrain, causing immediate brain death Destroying the brain and the spinal cord of the fish will prevent reflex action from happening. This will help you making your fish fresher and more delicious. It could look cruel, but this method is considered to be the fastest and most humane method of killing fish (Fish welfare and quality as affected by pre-slaughter and slaughter management. Aquaculture International 13: 29-49).
    Thank you for watching my video!

    Brains like we do have nerve tubes/canals that lead in our whole body, destroying the brain, organ loses function having no command to do which why nerves go down, and that’s why we can’t feel the pain. Although a human would die instantly, but the heart will beat for few times. Just imagine using this method on fish and a bullet that goes through humans brain( let’s hope that this doesn’t happen to everyone) We go down, having no connections to nerves to do an action.
    Same goes for fish or any other animal. I hope you read my comment and understand why is this the humane way of killing the fish.

      funny enough, since their brain is a simple structure, it could be that you just merely messed up its ability to control its body, as you can’t actually be sure each, and every time. So as you gut it, cut it’s head off, your just killing it normally, with an added affect of it being a vegetable inside it’s own body before it died.
      So extra horror to the fish by your hands lol

      Nonsense. It's akin to lobotomy, it occasionally caused paralysis and many things.
      Ikejime do not guarantee dead brain. Stick with club, it's many times more humane than this so-called "ikijame."

      Takes too long, and if you catch a bunch of fish and you have to fillet them yourself, this is honestly too much of a hassle. Besides, id say this is a lot more brutal and inefficient than simply thunking the fish on the noggin, killing it instantly.

    This process is interesting. It's new to me. We have an immediate kill law here in Maine. I'll try it on the next legal striper I catch. They have to be at least 28 inches to keep here.

    • @Opaleye

      That is a great law! I hope more fishermen do that with fish. Wow. In CA, they have to be 18 inches or bigger in saltwater. And, many lakes like this in the video has no size limit on stripers. Love to hear how your experience of ikejime goes !! Tight Lines!

    As explained before on a separate video, this method has been used for thousands of years as it was discovered to improve the flavor of fish because the fish goes through less pain and stress using this method than the traditional method used by many companies today, which is throwing fish into an ice box and have them suffocate to death which could take up to five minutes to a few hours.

  • @nelsonsun4952
    @nelsonsun4952 5 лет назад +7

    Nice videos. I ordered the tool from Japan a couple weeks ago. I read that the best way to find the brain is to enter between and right above the eyes and point the spike at the end of the lateral line for most fish. Does this sound correct to you? Also if you successfully spike the brain is there still a chance the wire will go into the muscle instead of the spinal column or does the skull always guide the wire in correctly? I am going bluefin fishing in a few weeks and worry about pushing a wire into the loins. I’ve only done the brain spiking before but never the wire but want to try this time if I catch one. Also for large bft that are longer than 4 or 5 ft, I was thinking about using 80lb flouro instead. Do you think that would work? Thanks for the videos they are helpful.

    • @Opaleye
      @Opaleye  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, that is very accurate. Yes there is still a chance that the wire will go into the muscle. The fish will show an intense reaction when you insert the wire correctly! it would work, but using a thicker wire for blue fin tunas will be better :)

    I watched an entire ike jime playlist from this Korean fellow, and he pointed out that you know you hit the brain when the fish suddenly dilates its pupils and opens its mouth wide. (In the examples you show, it doesn't appear that this is happening in the fish you process.)
    He doesn't just stab the fish, he also stirs the spike around to scramble the brain. Also, for rapidly bleeding out the fish and to remove the spinal column, he uses a Japanese water pressure based tool that squirts a stream of water into the nerve chanel, which pushes the entire spinal cord out the hole he poked in the brain in a second, then he squirts a stream of water into the artery under the fish spine, rapidly draining the fish of blood. This tool he uses seems to me to be a faster and more thorough way of doing the spinal cord neutralizing and the blood removal.
    Take a look:

      Decapitation is also deemed humane as long as it is followed by pithing, which is the destruction of the brain. After decapitation, insert a probe into the head and swish it around to destroy the central nervous system. Similar to a lobotomy, pithing is done because, unlike mammals, fish can remain conscious after decapitation due to their unique physiology (Pauline Chen and Daniela Sharma, Ph.D. - Rutgers University)

    I know you think that this is the "humane" way of killing a fish but the fact of the matter is that fish have extremely different brains than we or other mammals do. First off fish lack a neocortex which is what produces conciousness in mammals. They also lack the nerve structure to feel pain. So while it might make sense to kill the fish quickly for convenience, it doesn't really make it "humane" because it's highly unlikely that the fish is suffering as a human or mammal would. And I'm not trying to sound cruel, but as a fisherman I've done a ton of research on this. Check out Dr. James Rose's papers for more info. Tight lines!

    • @Opaleye
      @Opaleye  5 лет назад +2

      It was an old idea that fish dont feel pain. And, recently, many scientists have done some experiments that support the idea that they do feel pain. Myself is a scientist who have done years of research on the nervous system. I have done alot of reading on this topic as well. Also, this method would be helpful if fish do feel pain. On the other hand, it would not harm any even if they dont. Thank you so much for watching my video and writing your comment :) Tight lines to you too!

    • @GREEKgangsta15

      @@Opaleye Another thing to consider is how fish behave after being hooked. Think about it, if you got hooked in the mouth it would hurt like hell and you probably wouldn't be thinking about eating. But there's many cases of fish breaking the line and then being caught again within minutes with the hook still in their mouths. I've had this happen myself a few times with largemouth and bluefish. Also had another time when I caught a striper with an ice pick sticking out of its anal vent. When I see things like that it makes me very skeptical that fish experience conscious pain like humans or mammals would

    • @Opaleye
      @Opaleye  5 лет назад +1

      @@GREEKgangsta15 I dont think we have the same definition of pain here. Your definition seems like the pain that we, humans, feel. I do believe that fish feel pain, but I dont think that is the pain that humans feel. You cant assume that they would feel their pain in the way we do.

    • @GREEKgangsta15
      @GREEKgangsta15 5 лет назад

      @@Opaleye Sorry I don't want to get in a debate or anything. Just as an animal lover but also an avid fisherman, I would hate to deliberately do anything that would cause suffering to any creature. However there's a difference between what we know as "pain" and something called nociception which is basically injury stimuli. Even bacteria and microorganisms experience nociception. But conscious suffering is a WHOLE other matter. Pain and fear are conscious states that humans and other mammals experience because of our large neocortex. Fish don't have this part of the brain so it's very unlikely that they possess the consciousness necessary to "feel" anything. Most of a fishes behavior (including reactions to being hooked/handled) could very well be attributed to unconscious learning aka instinct

    • @Opaleye
      @Opaleye  5 лет назад +2

      @@GREEKgangsta15 No worries. I like educational conversations like this. I do agree that fish dont feel the pain like we do. But, I think stress is a type of pain although it does not directly injure fish. Also, whether they feel pain or not, I believe that this method has no harms, but benefits.

    As a fisherman ... a little critical .... the video claims a humane way .. but you mean for the best meat really? I'll give you the best meat thing.... I'm sure it's tasty.
    But humane? Fish appears at 0:23 .... and it takes 47 seconds, arranging yourself and mucking about with the fish to put the needle in? And you don't finish for another 45 seconds, so 1.5 minutes?
    2 smacks on the head (instantly dead), gut and clean takes 10 seconds at the most?

    • @Opaleye
      @Opaleye  4 года назад

      Hello, I am a fisherman, but also a scientist. I dont think you understood the video correctly. The process with a wire has nothing to do with its pain. Damaging its brain with a spike is what makes fish unable to feel pain, which takes a few seconds. Thank you.

    • @black5f
      @black5f 4 года назад

      @@Opaleye Hi there. I don't doubt that. And I'm sure the meat tastes great. If I catch a fish I'm going to eat, I pick it out the water , destroy the brain, gut and clean immediately, quickly like 10 seconds, as humane as it gets I suppose. Fresher the better. All this stuff about lactic acid building in the blood starts the moment it's caught and dragged out of it's environment. It worries me because in the West this is becoming trendy and ritual thing. People are of the mind it doesn't matter what you do to the poor thing before it's death but this ritual somehow makes it better and guilt free. Ikejime kits ebay £22? Just don't muck about, kill them quick, minimal handling.
      I'm a scientist as well, a biologist actually, and mathematics.

    • @Opaleye
      @Opaleye  4 года назад

      @@black5f Yeah the wiring process makes its meat better. People are doing it to minimize the amount of lactic acid produced. Even if you "destroy the brain, gut and clean immediately," fish won't stop moving for a while, leading to the production of lactic acid.
