Artist George Pérez earned and re-earned his fan favorite status over and over. This video takes a look at what he's arguably best known for: team books and titles with large casts of characters. We look at how his techniques evolved, where he drew inspiration from, and the highlights and stumbles along the way. There's a focus on Avengers, New Teen Titans, Justice League of America, JLA/Avengers, Crisis on Infinite Earths, and Infinity Guantlet.

I met George Perez at Dragoncon a few years ago. He was sitting in an unmarked table in the vendors hall, just nursing a water, with no indication at all who he was. Like no sign, no special badge, no nametag, no nothing. I was (luckily) dressed up as a Teen Titan that day, and got my picture with him, and he signed the prop I had on me, all while complimenting my costume. I got a picture on my phone, and he took one on his, and he seem genuinely touched that a few people were going up to him and talking to him (my friend and I went up, and a few people were after us). I had to go cry in a corner for a few seconds afterwards, because it was really personal the guy who created most of my childhood talk to me and take a picture with me. People were walking by him all day not knowing who he was, and he seemed to just be having a grand time surrounded by all these people dressed up as comic characters. I'm not even sure he was mentioned as a guest that year, or if he was having any panels or anything. All the pictures and signatures were free too. It just always stood out to me as one of my favorite con memories of all time. A literal 'would have blinked and missed it' moment.

I met him at ChicagoCon in 2008. He was a featured guest at a central table, and they held daily drawings for bust sketches, all proceeds going to CBLDF. He would talk to the crowd every day during the drawing of the sketch winners, and he was a fabulous MC with infectious enthusiasm. I didn't win a sketch, but I did get to meet him & have my photo taken with him, a photo I will always treasure. As a lifelong Perez fan, I whittled my collection down to 15 key books I wanted him to sign. I apologized for the stack and he graciously signed every one of them. That is the only big con I've ever gone to, but he made it truly memorable. George will always be the unfair yardstick by which I measure all comic book artists, and I thank him for enriching my life.

Growing up in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, seeing George Perez’s art in a comic was like champagne for breakfast.

George Pérez is the absolute GOODS! He was a shining light during my days in comics--George even showed up at my wedding. Besides his excellence in penciling and storytelling, his trademark was his booming, honest laugh. It warms my soul to know he has the respect that is due him. Praise George Pérez!

I usually don't comment on videos but true story. When I was young I went to a con. Stayed in line to meet George Perez. The con reps were trying to get people in and out ASAP, so I asked my friend to take a pic of me getting my book signed. When it was my turn he noticed my friend and said "is that your friend takin a pic?". When I said yes, he immediately stopped the reps and line to run around the table to put his arm around me and take a proper pic. The picture is still up in my comic room 15 years later. Such a great dude and big part of comic history.

Jim Shooter was a really passionate. He really knew his stuff. But sugesting Don Heck was simply a provocation. A good artist, but never at legend level like Perez
As SOON as I heard that they wanted Flash vs. Quicksilver I KNEW Shooter shit a brick. I even knew the argument for why it was a nonstarter. I was only slightly surprised I had the exact words.
@@Ebonzai the Quicksilver from the comics couldn't keep up to The Flash...but the Fox X-Men Universe Quicksilver could at least put up an okay showing.
@@nmr7203 it's debatable given the vfx made his abilities appear superior than his comic counterpoint.
His run on Wonder Woman is one of my favorites. I love his delving further into the Greek mythological influences behind the character. Always love George Perez!
It's also cool that he Based his Reboot Design on Marina Sirtis.

I would consider Perez a bit of an anti-Kirby. Kirby always made his characters bigger than the panel (so their bodies couldn't fit within the confines of the panel), while Perez made his characters quite small relative to everything going on in the panel.
It's that balance of influences, but in the Sketch Magazine interview, Perez lists Kirby as an influence.
The way he draws sci-fi and future tech is very Kirby-esque, but I agree the way he frames it is very zoomed out instead of in, in a way you see a very detailed mesmerizing picture from afar instead of a jaw breaking picture spreading out of the panel.

You could talk for 24 hours and still not say enough good things about George Perez. Truly a master storyteller.
The best compliment I can give Perez is I never once felt like I wasted my money when I bought a book he drew. His work was never half-assed. Super obvious he loved comics and poured his heart into every page.
Wasn’t mentioned in this video but Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds is another large team crossover Perez did and he knocked it out of the park as per usual. Fantastic story
Its sad he didn't do more on The Legion. They really work to his strengths and he always does a good job on them.
One of the most incredibly talented and dedicated artists to ever bless the industry.
I hope he realizes just how influential and loved he is.

He was THE artist 👨🎨 of my DC childhood ! Him and John Byrne and Dave Cockrum are like the Trinity of comic book artists of that time.
Perez, Byrne, Alan Davis and Jim Lee. I can never pick between them honestly. In the 80s/90s if any of them were the artist I bought it.
@@jorgem.1564 Jim Lee, while immensely talented, never was my cup of tea. His contribution as a whole to the industry cannot be denied though for sure (artist or otherwise).
@@maples328 i feel the same way. While he does great covers, i fond his interior art a bit much. Ive always said: he draws like he’s paid by the line.
@@jonbodhi I’ve never (or at least can’t remember) thought that his art was busy for busy sake though. If anything, the surrounding detail sticks out because most later artists either phone it in too much with simple details or go over the top in an attempt to look artistic

The "entire JLA/Avengers members" cover from the JLA/Avengers run alone gives me goosebumps just by looking at it... What an absolute legend!!!
I read The Incredible Hulk: Future Imperfect for the first time last year, and I was blown away by Pérez's art, especially that opening double splash page at the bazaar. A Pérez crowd scene is a real treat.
For me, it's Crisis on Infinite Earth...the original series..and those double splash pages

That was a stunning book and one of the best examples of the medium being an art form.
@@ericsnyder5427 Its introductory double splash in Part 1 is magnificent, but that magnificence gets undercut later. What should be the trophy room's moment to shine (Bruce's climactic showdown with the Maestro) is kind of "meh" due to sloppy inking. I don't know if it was a rush job or a printing error or what, but the lines in my copy of Part 2 (as well as every reproduction I've seen) are noticeably hazier than the precision of Part 1. I'd love for Chris or someone to do a deep dive on this mini-mystery.

I wasn’t a fan of Crisis on Infinite Earths when it came out, and I’m not a fan now…..as far as the story goes. But the art??? That is why I read it once a year. George Perez is the best!!!!
I absolutely agree. The story never worked for me, it was the art that made it worth buying.
Its quite of an artistic feat. Not only Perez is worthy with his skill, but, he combines his encyclopedic knowledge and love of the characters by adding easter eggs and endless character details. It was the comic book equivalent of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

I have the absolute Edition, which includes a secondary book that goes into all the details about everything that led into it. Knowing that it's pretty good. It does get a little long though, because the story was supposed to end a little bit earlier. I can see why someone might not like it for the story, but it's definitely better than anything that comes out now and compared to its distinguished competitions version, Secret Wars, it was a lot better
It was a bittersweet Free Comic Book Day today, hearing the news that he has passed. He will always be one of my favorite artists and writers. He will be missed.
Perez is my favorite comic artist of all time. He was involved in some of the greatest story lines as well. R.I.P.
Perez is a huge part of my young life. Collected everything from him since I discovered him in the early 80’s. Comics would be nothing to me without him. I respect his art and his life. I was hurt to hear about his health recently. Prayers for George Perez.

I went to a comic con a few weeks back where he talked at a panel with Marv and I was really sad to hear he couldn’t really draw anymore. Also, the intros are back!!! Yes!

A combination of type 2 diabetes and pancreatic cancer and he’s decided that he doesn’t want to get chemotherapy for it because it would prolong his life by just a few months and he would be in constant pain and agony.
There's a moment in this video where Chris starts reading, gets something wrong, goes back, and starts reading again. I loved it, because it makes him seem real, instead of the almost robot-like videos we often see in other channels.
He was my favorite artist - BAR NONE! He had me running to the comic shop to get his latest work, weekly.
Now, he's gone to the big easel in the sky - way too soon. Thank you for all the beautiful work and amazing storytelling, George.

I heard he injured himself making that awesome giant cover for JLA/Avengers. Just goes to show the passion and pride he had in his work.
George Perez did God-tier work. He may be my favorite comic book artist of all time.
I met him once in Orlando for a signing, apparently the store he held his box at. He was so nice, to the point that it always sticks out in my mind when I think of him. I accidentally ripped my infinity gauntlet while pulling it out of its sleeve when it got caught on some tape. He offered to buy me a new one because he felt so bad. Love that guy.
This is a great tribute. RIP to the greatest modern comics artist.

I met him at a con in 2019. Seriously the nicest person I've ever met. My favorite artist hands down.
I loved his art in both the Justice League and Avengers.
Wonderful episode, Chris! I had the pleasure of meeting George at Megacon in 2014. He is without a doubt one of the sweetest and sincere creators I've ever met. I briefly told him how Raven was a source of comfort and motivation during a period of my life when I was suicidal. He immediately grabbed my hands and gave me some heartfelt words of hope and encouragement. He made sure not only that we got a picture together, but that he did a sketch of Raven for me free of charge. I've never had a more personal connection when meeting a creator than with him and I will treasure that for the rest of my life.
Being and still living in The Bronx George Perez is and will always be mt favorite artist with his illness it truly saddens my heart not to be able to meet him and thank him for all the great years he put in his story telling in his art. Thank you George you will never be forgotten.
One of the things I always loved about his work - and you touched on - was how different the characters he illustrated were. Different physiques, faces, heights, all of it, just so amazingly, beautifully drawn.
Add in the fact he always came across as a genuinely cool human being and you've got someone who really will be missed.
One of the nicest creators I’ve ever met. Never will forget meeting him at a show in Dallas and rather than autographs he was doing sketches for every single person in line …..for FREE!!! Amazing generous, kind man who always has a smile on his face and loves the fans. Thank you George Perez for everything you’ve done for comics. Back in the mid-nineties I was Creative Director at Big Entertainment/TeknoComix where Mr. Perez penciled what is probably the best looking books we ever produced: I-Bots. These books are available super-cheap used and his work on them (cover and interiors for issues 1-3, and the subsequent covers-only on issues 4-6) were among the handful books that I am truly proud of from my time at the company.
Nice to see a well balanced non biased approach to this story as exemplified by the voices used for Dick Giordano and Jim Shooter.

Everything I make is filtered through my opinions. I don't think Shooter's individual nitpicks were wrong but I think he was nitpicking to hold things up for some reason. Anyway, it's all my opinion.
@@ComicTropes You don't think he was maybe just… doing his job? Quality control? Spotting clear continuity errors that fans would surely point out? Getting down to business first since the letter he was replying to ended with a plea for quickness due to a lack of time?
@@FordFourD-aka-Ford4D Yeah, I can't help but feel we're hearing only a part of the story in those letters. Gruenwald was literally Marvel's continuity guy and these all sound like issues he would be raising. Had Gruenwald taken it to Shooter because he wasn't being listened to? Whatever the case may be it sounds suspiciously like there was a personality clash that that really precipitated this rather than the specific reasons given.
@@ComicTropes fair enough but was really hoping for a bit more of a balanced approach. I try to be the same with all my news sources. I think a neutral reading for both voices would have served you better here. And we the viewers make up our own minds? That's just MY opinion.

George Perez is still one of my favorite modern comic creators of all time, I have so many fond memories of his work when I was a kid into both Marvel and DC comics in the 80s and 90s.
Your video shows what a GODDAMN LEGEND he was and still is. I'm glad to hear that by your account anyway, he seems like an awesome and joyful guy
One of my favorite artists. So glad I was able to meet him a few years ago. Got an awesome sketch cover for cheap, he signed numerous books at no charge, let me film the whole thing, took several photos with me, answered a ton of questions- all with a huge smile. One of the nicest guys I've ever met. And he was that way with each person who stood in line to meet him. Great video on a great talent, keep up the good work.

Great video. I met George back in '93 at the first Wizard Comic Fest in Philly. He moderated a debate between Peter David and Todd Mcfarlane (Peter CRUSHED Todd BTW). I was able to meet George later that day. He was walking around the show and I asked if he would sign some items for me. He was very gracious in doing so. I cannot say the same for Todd. He was also walking around the show, but he smugly said he was only signing at the Image table at his scheduled time. George was bigger than him, but I will always be grateful that he took time out for a fan.
I had the honor of meeting him at Megacon some years ago. He signed some stuff for me and was incredibly nice. We really need more guys like him in the industry right now.
Perez’ Wonder Woman changed my life. Finding issue #1 in the window of my LCS set me up as a comic collector for the rest of my life. I’ve collected every issue since. A really special artist who’s work remains an inspiration & influential to this day. Thank you for this tribute. 🙏🏼

Rest in peace George Perez, many of my all time favorite comic stories would have not been the same without his masterful hand. To me he was the definitive super-hero artist, no one could do it better than him.
One of the all time greatest in the industry. It would be badass to see him get live action cameos in DC and Marvel projects (along with a few others in his league, like Chris Claremont)...
The DC staff gave him a tour on the offices after the sad news came. Lets expect Marvel does something similar.
I was rewatching older Comic Tropes videos when this popped up in my recommendations and I was surprised I hadn’t watched it… until I realized it was posted 11 minutes ago.
George Perez is beloved by me for my entire life. I am so old I have followed his whole run on nearly everything from the 70's Avengers, 80's JLA, Titans....the man is one of the best.
Met him twice at NewYork Comic Con. ... he was as gracious and kind as you described... he will be missed and not forgotten...
I was obsessed with his Teen Titans! I can still picture so many individual panels in my mind it's crazy. I think it helped that the version I read was not colored. The pencilship is so amazing, as is the staging of the scenes and composition of panels.
Re-read The New Teen Titans #18. It was a favorite story that pitted TNTT against the Russian Starfire. ✌

I was able to meet George Pérez at a convention back in 2019. I brought a trade paperback of his ‘90s Avengers run for him to sign, and he asked me who my favourite Avenger was. I said Stingray, and he replied that he’d never met a Stingray fan before! Anyway, he was incredibly friendly and humble in the brief conversation I had with him - an absolute icon of the industry.
He's definitely one of the greatest artists in the business!
George Perez was a great artist who balanced hordes of characters with individual personalities, epic and human. Grand splash pages and intimate corner pieces. His love for the work shined through every page and elevated the medium. He will be missed. He has inspired many great young artists to carry on. But there will never be another George Perez.

The day I fell in love with comics was when I saw JLA/Avengers 3 (the poster cover) as a kid in a newstand. I bought it, read it, and was hooked for life. His wonder woman run is one of the most special of any character for me, it had a degree of artistic and thematic sensibility that stunned me. All the best wishes for the man, forever.

JLA/Avengers is a definitely recommended read, both for Busiek's encyclopedic knowledge and plot, and Perez's massive illustrations.
The memory cascade from issue #3 and the final battle in issue #4 are two of the most epic scenes you'll ever see in a superhero comic book: members of both Avengers and JLA, coming from their past rosters, fighting waves after waves of their deadliest foes, from the lowliest goons to top-tier superhuman threats.

I got to meet George at Denver Comic Con in 2012, and he was true to everything I've ever heard about him; he was approachable, warm, very kind, and willing to not only sign all my issues of Infinity Gauntlet, but to take the time to peruse my portfolio in earnest and give me some priceless insight - despite having a ton of people waiting in line to meet him.
That said, gotta love how Shooter's voice actor gave him a classic, know-it-all, arrogant comic book nerd voice.
I remember George doing a show in Los Angeles a few years ago where he drew sketches and signed a ton of autographs for hours for a very long line of fans including myself. I cannot believe how he maintained the speed and quality of all those sketches. Through it all he maintained such a positive attitude the whole show. Such an amazing and talented individual.
When most people picture a superhero in their minds eye, they’re probably thinking of George Perez’s rendition.

Because Perez passed away a few days ago, I decided to lookup "tribute" videos and found yours today. I really enjoyed all the details you provided on Perez's career. He really was one of the all time greats and was one of the major reasons why I got into reading comic books in the late 70s/early 80s and never stopped.
I absolutely love his work on Crisis On Infinite Earths, and his work on Avengers in the late 90's.
I am glad that George gets to see how much impact he had on all of our lives, and how much he is loved, while he is still here to appreciate it.
Thanks for this, I had the pleasure of spenidng time with George and his wife at MCM in London a few years ago and they were fantastic company. It was also an absolute joy to see his interactions with his fans.
So this was the video you teased last week, a surprise but a welcome one.
Of all the times I sat at the booth with him, he never once was unhappy, or unkind. He could draw the most beautiful characters in minutes. And he never let down a fan. He was the most genuine person I knew. Always smiling and full of passion for his work. He loved much, and was loved.

My first exposure to George Perez was the late 90's Avengers run with Kurt Busiek.
I was truly blown away of the way he depicted characters. Everyone felt real and unique.
I can't think of any artist that can top him in terms of making a team book. the fact that you can tell which character is which when they are not in costume is mind blowing to me.
Every time I open any George Pérez story, I always find amazing compositions and storytelling. The greatest thing is that the guy seems to be, also, an amazing person :)

I have all of Perez's Fantastic Four books in my collections. When I was a kid, FF and Spider-Man were my passionate faves.
Mr.perez is in my opinion the best all-time illustrator of comics right up there with mr.kirby.👍

I read and collected comics for almost 30 years beginning in 1977. George Perez is my favorite of all time. Your video is outstanding. I just found out he passed away a few days ago. I can't thank him enough for the joy and entertainment he brought to me in my younger days. The more I've been reading, watching and hearing what other people say about him, I begin to realize he was a better human being than a great artist which is saying something.
George Perez is a legend. I started to know his work when he and Kurt Busiek did The Avengers. I was hooked!!! It was such a fun and exciting series. I started checking out his other stuff after that. This man is just so good. It's heart breaking to know that he won't be long for this world.
What an incredible legacy George Perez has given the comic book community. I've loved the comics I've read that he illustrated. I'll have to look up some of the ones I've missed. As someone who shares the last name Perez I can only aspire to be worthy of the name if his career is the bar. Truly a one of a kind artist.

I love Perez's artwork, I was a huge Avengers fan as a kid and I vividly remember the Korvac Saga, and then a few years later I gave up my Marvel obsession by starting to read The Teen Titans for a few years before I gave up superheroes altogether. (I'd discovered Cerebus and Love & Rockets and they were just so much more interesting than muscly people in costumes with magic powers)
Ha ha. I had the same journey as you. By the mid to late 90s, I had given up on mainstream comics and was exclusively reading European/foreign and Independent comics and graphic novels.
R.I.P. to the man that made me fall in love with comic books.
