It seems like no one talks about this, but.... as skilled as Ren is at so, soooo many things, I think his true *talent* is an _insanely_ phenomenal sense of *escalation*

    • @ignoblesavage5559

I've talked often about his sense of dramatic tension and timing. It packs extra power into his already powerful lyrics and delivery. It's not always about the pauses, but the pauses are a part of it. It's usually about his manipulation of pitch, intensity, and volume that gives so many of his songs their extra power while the lyrics CONNECT us to them.

Abruptly cutting off the string quartet, long pause and maintain eye contact for seriousness, use of narrative aside to draw the audience in, asking us to place ourselves within the shoes of this man. Now, as Jimmy goes to the table...we see there is a gun, and there is a long ominous silence as he picks up and proceeds to load the firearm.
I think this particular silence might carry the message of the whole song. You're Jimmy and all you've ever known is success, but you never got the love you needed. Now you're broken and beaten, but at least you're rich. Now you're picking up a gun. What is going through your mind right now? What questions are you asking yourself? What do you want? What could have been different? How much did any of it really matter?
Silence, when used deliberately in live performance, can pull you into the story and encourage the audience to ask questions of themselves.

I'm 51 years old and it seems to me that roughly every ten years or so time brings about a switch in music. The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, hair metal in the 80's, Nirvana and grunge in the 90's, and so on. It might be my age but the 2000's and the 10's didn't bring about much of a revolution other than more technologically sophisticated means to record and present your art to a bigger mass of people without searching for the record deals, and doing it on a massively lower budget in your home rather than a traditional studio would cost. But now, here's Ren. I started this with The Beatles, 1963. Sixty years later Ren is doing stuff that, to me and 1000's of others, is quite different from other artists. I could write 50 lines on how he differentiates from others. Just some words, then... Innovative, intelligent, provocative, very talented in several mediums, thoughtful, respectful, respectable... I don't have all day. He might just be the new hope for music in this generation. I left out a crucial word. Inspiring. Every huge band or artist that ever existed was the most inspiring for their generation and generations to come. I Think Ren could accomplish that.

Especially with Ren, he puts so many musical surprises in his music and videos, as well as the messaging in most of Ren's material. 50-year-old broken woman here. Got ill at 40 with autoimmune and connective tissue and pain disorders as well as a resurgence of mental illness that had been under control before the grinding everyday pain....I was heading up. Now I'm broken and broke, and I can only lie here in my sick bed and wish I had all those moments back. The ones where I wished away the boring moments until breaktime, vacation, workday ending, waiting in line etc.... all those pain-free moments that I just wished away without even hesitating. What I wouldn't give for ten minutes of boredom without pain. Who cares about money as long as you have enough. quality of life isn't determined by how much stuff you have, but by how much you can enjoy your life. Stuff is so overrated.
When my son was in the hospital battling leukemia, I had to fight my agoraphobia just to get to be by his side. I fought through my own body and mental pain because my 26 (at the time) year old son was battling for his life. (He's two years in remission now, thank God). I had to fight myself to be able to be by my son's hospital bed every day because I was broken.
What I wouldn't give to be able to just go like a good parent and be there without fear for myself, just fear for him. What kind of mom is that way?
I did it, I fought through it, but what I wouldn't trade to be able to have done it without the internal battle.
People don't know how to savor the time they have. I know I didn't. And now, after a decade of pain every single day, there's little left to enjoy.
I savor the time spent with my son when he visits. The time with my bf when I'm awake and he's not working. But the time in between, if only I could have the pain-free time back, I'd never complain about being bored. I'd write a book, visit my mom, go to a restaurant, do all the things that I was too busy to do before because i was waiting for something better to do.
    What a waste.
Here's hoping the brilliance in Ren's message reaches society and they actually hear it.... before it's too late, and like the mold in the petri dish, we consume ourselves to death.
I hope this isn't as garbled as I feel like it is. Sometimes the meds make me unclear. Bless you all and enjoy all the in-betweens. You'll miss them later. ❤
I love your reactions. Thank you 😊

That’s the thing, he is so talented at it that he does it even on purpose and somehow makes it sound just as good. He even does cuts in some of his videos making the video look like it was cut even though it was a single take. He literally does the opposite of what people do to make their content better.

Ren is a modern day genius. The way he writes, produces and directs as well as plays his instruments, acts and writes are extraordinary. He has a vision and he creates it to perfection every single time. His music is the best therapy I’ve had in over 30 years. His music has made me laugh, cry and feel emotions for the first time since I was 17. I’m now 47. I’m currently switching ‘happy’ medication and my mental health is not good, but his music is keeping me from doing something I would regret. Absolutely brilliant in every way shape and form.

Hey Elizabeth, my name is Phoenix and I’m a photo realistic portrait who lives in Australia. I have a passion for all art forms especially music. I am a beginner to intermediate guitar player on an acoustic electric fender telecaster which only bought a couple of years ago. I discovered like everyone else through the song “HI REN” and then discovered “THE TALE OF JENNY AND SCREECH” which also blew my mind. His guitar playing in both songs is beyond immaculate. He is much more than a singer and performer. He is a producer and actor director, a lyricist, a performing artist a rapper and a bloody nice guy he has more talent in his little finger than most people I’ve met in my life. I’m inspired by him intimidated by him in awe of him. I have to admit I am totally envious that you got to spend time in an interview with him. That must’ve been absolutely surreal. I have been following your channel since the charismatic voice on RUclips and with respect knowing that you’re married I think that you are stunningly beautiful, lovely smile that captures so much emotion when you watch these songs and draws me in so much more to your videos. You’re goofy giggles when you see something that tickles your fancy is adorable and infectious and I often find myself giving a goofy grin directly after you do you are without a doubt my favourite music reactionist. I like the way that you have in-depth technical knowledge and opera background giving you so much more insight into these videos. I also follow a few other people that are like psychiatrist and therapists that do reaction to music especially REN, BECAUSE BY MYSELF SUFFER FROM SERIOUS MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES SUCH AS BIPOLAR SCHIZOPHRENIA DISSOCIATIVE IDENTITY DISORDER, PANIC DISORDER, SOCIAL PHOBIA EATING DISORDERS, CHOKING PHOBIA, AGORAPHOBIA, GENERALISED ANXIETY DISORDER AND SUICIDAL IDEOLOGY , I am also in The Gender fluid, give me another challenge in life at the age of 51 raised in a time where guys had to be guys that would be beaten up in the street in the 1980s and people thought it was funny. I grew up tough to fight but also grew up to have three beautiful children. My oldest son is 31 now and he has four daughters the most beautiful granddaughters I could ask for I have a 16-year-old daughter and a 12-year-old son and one of them is my favourite in someway in their own unique way. They each in turn teach me sometimes far more than I can teach them. I teach him about music and pop culture but I also gave them a very strong sense of safety that I lacked as a child. You also seem to have a very innocent nature although from the reactions I can tell that you’ve seen your share of pain in life, because of your empathy it gives you away which is an amazing and wonderful thing. I wish all content creators were more like you. Thank you for the years of service that you have given the community who loves music as much as you and I do thank you for being a good person, and thank you for keeping this channel going. You are an inspiration motivator and lovely lucky mother and wife. You give far more to the world and you take from it. If we all did that, can you imagine what we would have?
Sorry for the long rant, but I felt it necessary to get my point across.
    Sincerely yours,
    Your number one Australian Fan.

Another reactor who also raps himself is Knox hill (also a good friend to ren thru reacting) and he does a good job at explaining his internal and external rhyming and they way he plays on different words and theatrical expressions. I have seen many different reactors to many different Ren songs, and you hit the nail on the head as to the reason why. I want to know how each reactor reacts to all of Rens songs. Not only are you a very proficient vocal coach, but you've got some good psychoanalogy as well. When you broke down how the reaction community works I think it explains some of how Ren has grown so fast and so far. He's smart enough to use the reaction community to spread his music far and wide and loves his reactors( doesn't copyright). He will be remembered long after he leaves this earth through his musical brilliance. I share Ren with anyone who will listen. Hope you keep safe and happy. I look forward to your reactions, I found Ren by watching five finger death punch reactions( yours was one of them). So thank you for your deeply felt reactions, you are a joy.🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

Ren is amazing. Best artist I've discovered since BAND-MAID. Add in Samuel and it's magic, not other word for it. Video is Ren's medium because of how excellent his acting and storytelling are. Love what these two guys are doing.
Elizabeth is spot on about reactors. Of course, music, especially in the digital age, is not a consumable resource so it's not subject to scarcity, but I get what she means. I collect vocal coaches (and some people who are just fun to watch) like Pokemon if I were I a kid in the late 90s. A part of it she didn't hit on is that I think there's something to the idea vicarious enjoyment here. We can never hear something for the first time again, so watching someone else have that experience is the closest we'll ever get. It's maybe not quite as great as being in the same room with a friend and watching their reaction in real time, but it's still pretty fun!

It is, in fact, a gem.... I always await the next release with great anticipation.

    Love the channel and reaction!
Friendly advice from an experienced parent: don't make the kid feel like you're always proud of him. Obviously, kids need to feel loved -- but they can feel loved without being praised/complimented regularly. What happens if you are constantly saying how proud you are of them for their accomplishments, etc., is -- paradoxically -- that they begin to expect it and it isn't special to them anymore. As a result, instead of trying hard to do something exceptional to win praise, they they feel hurt or as if they are not loved when they do _not_ receive praise for something. This leads to them being afraid to fail or even be second-best at something. It sadly can paralyze many kids, making them afraid to do anything they aren't great at, afraid to try new things, and quick to quit any activity that they discover that they are not the best at.
Good luck on that wonderful journey as a young parent! :) :)

I think I am somewhat guilty of what you’re talking about. My parents were the type that said things like “what happened with this A-?” So I tried to avoid making my son feel the way I did. We both ended up perfectionists, although for different reasons. I tend towards trying to make my son always feel he is special and his accomplishments are amazing. He does tend to avoid things he’s not automatically good at, although I am working on getting him to try new things. Thanks for giving me something to think about.

Do you recall Rex Harrison's "speak-singing" in "My Fair Lady"? To my ear, Ren's rap has a similar 'singing' or pitched quality, and it lets him to break into song at strategic points in a seamless way. The quality is a bit like a tuned drum or a timpani. His pitch center seems close to a note in the chords playing in the background in part 1. I think the three parts taken together give a trinary indictment of materialism and greed, first emotional, second academic(economics), and finally by narrative or morality play. In each case Ren is an artist/protagonist holding up a mirror to himself and aspects of the society where he lives

I hadn't even heard of his work until you reacted to Hi, Ren - which I immediately identified with in an instant. Never have I felt so SEEN, like someone else out there knew what it was like inside my brain in those darkest despairing moments. He hits you WHERE YOU LIVE, in almost all of his works. None of us will ever be able to describe the genius and mastery to the extent that he exemplifies. By sharing his gifts, he's helping us feel like we're not so alone, and in one simple line he helped me learn more about mental health than I ever did in years of therapy. And so, for that, I must thank you for bringing his work to your channel. One of the reasons I love watching reaction videos to music, like this, is because that first experience of watching it yourself is like opening a surprise gift that you didn’t expect, but is soooo good. Then you can’t help but tell others and give them the gift and hope they are surprised in a similar vein to you. But also, the joy of giving the gift or seeing how someone reacts to it, is you learn something too. So there’s both this shared experience and growing happening at the same time which is so satisfying and human. I’ve learnt so much from watching your videos, and been introduced to many styles and genres of music I never would of listened to otherwise. Thankyou for sharing your insights and experience. Some of my friends think I'm a little odd that I can listen to Aphex Twin, and jump right into Boccherini. They don't seem to understand the overlap, but that is what it is. I can deeply enjoy some 2004 Tim Hecker - Mirages, and easily vibe right over to some Max Richter.
