From Brig to Heidadorf-Vispterterminen. (Driving in Switzerland part 11)
    VALAIS / WALLIS
Valais is a southern Swiss canton home to the pyramid-shaped Matterhorn, luxurious alpine resorts, and world-class Rhone Valley wineries. The holiday resort of Zermatt at the foot of the Matterhorn offers numerous ski slopes and the opportunity to hike on the old routes used by mule traders. It is also the starting point for the Glacier Express. To the east lies the huge Aletsch Glacier.
    HEIDADORF VISPERTERMINEN
Below the village of Visperterminen lies Europe's highest contiguous vineyard, at an altitude of between 650 and 1,150 meters. In short terraces with high dry stone walls, the vineyard, called "Rieben", overcomes 500 meters in altitude in a very small space.
Hundreds of these retaining walls turn the steep slopes into small vineyards, which are often no larger than two sheets of linen. The southern exposure of the slope, in one of the driest areas of Switzerland, and the large stone surfaces of these dry stone walls make the "Rieben" a warm chamber until late autumn, which - together with a few blows of the foehn - gives the grapes the necessary ripeness.
    Winery in Valais
With 5,259 hectares, Valais now has the largest wine-growing area in Switzerland. While the extreme points stretch from the end of Lake Geneva to Visperterminen, the Valais vineyard stretches almost 120 kilometers between Martigny and Visperterminen, over the right bank of the Rhone. The vines in Valais usually thrive at an altitude of between 450 and 800 meters, with one notable exception: the Visperterminen vineyards. The entire wine-growing area in Valais is spread over around 119,500 plots, with almost 23,000 owners, of whom less than 20% are full-time winemakers.
The weather is an important factor: Valais has a continental climate. The influence of the Alps predominates. The winters are cold, with the occasional risk of frost, while the summers are hot. Annual precipitation is low (about 600 mm). Autumn is often mild and sunny, with the foehn wind favoring the ripening of the late specialities.
