When it's summer in our Northern Hemisphere and winter in the Southern Hemisphere one would expect the same winter as we get here in the North with snow and extreme cold yet, that does not seem the case. In Aus/NZ for example they get mild winters. I don't even think they see snow except maybe on mountains. There's other forces at play besides tilting towards or away from the sun.

I've often wondered what is the "true" orientation of the earth's axis. Here at 5:04 it is shown as NW to SE, or "tilted to the left." However, when you buy globes at a book or toy store, see other charts in books, or see similar demonstrations elsewhere, half the time the earth's axis is shown as NE to SW, or "tilted to the right" as shown at 26:40. So which way is the earth tilted? It seems it is 50-50 either way! Even in this easy-to-understand video lecture (great job) there is an inconsistency in which way the earth is tilted, or perhaps it is my lack of understanding visuals in space or something. I know as far as understanding what causes the changing seasons the tilt (is all that counts), and WHICH way the tilt is going doesn't matter as long as the oval orbit is consistent in making the explanation. Thus you can flip-flop the solar orbital path depending on which way the tilt is leaning. I get that. For example, if you use an axis tilted-to-the-left model of earth (5:04) where the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun then we say the orbit about the sun (though farthest away) is summer. However, if you exchange the earth model with a tilted-to-the-right style (used later in the lecture @ 27:46) then you would have to put the oval orbit about the sun on the OPPOSITE side of the the sun. The orbital positions about the sun it seems would depend on which tilt orientation (NW-SE or NE-SW) you are using if you're demonstrating summer/winter. Isn't the orbital path fixed? Is earth's northern hemisphere summer "east" of the sun or "west"of the sun in its orbit? I've seen pics of the earth from space, but I can't determine which way the tilt is leaning, left or right. Yes, I know the axis is fixed as explained above, which is why I ask is one model accurate and the other not? I think it may be one reason why some people may think the changing seasons are due to a "shifting axis", because you see half the earth models going in one direction and half going in the opposite! There are two axis to consider. There is the axis of the earth's orbit around the sun. There is also the axis of the rotation of the earth with runs between the two poles. Take stick and hold it straight up to represent the axis of the orbit of the earth around the sun. Now take something smaller like a pen and hold it up at an angle offset from the axis of orbit. Now maintaining the same pointing directions of both the pen and the sun, move the pen around the stick. The rotation of the sun is a whole different matter. From Wikipedia, "en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_rotation "Solar rotation varies with latitude. The Sun is not a solid body, but is composed of a gaseous plasma. Different latitudes rotate at different periods. The source of this differential rotation is an area of current research in solar astronomy.[1] The rate of surface rotation is observed to be the fastest at the equator (latitude φ = 0°) and to decrease as latitude increases. The solar rotation period is 24.47 days at the equator and almost 38 days at the poles. The average rotation is 28 days."

When I was a kid you could buy a yo yo or a top for a nickel. When I got a haircut the barber gave me a nickel and when I bought a top you wound the string and spun it! It spun pretty straight on a good pull until it ran low on energy. Then it began to wobble. This very slight effect could explain why the seasons seem mingled these days. Probably not but I have to believe things are constantly changing all around us!

Why would the earth not be closer to the sun in April and October? The orbit you drew showing that the sun is closer to the earth in January than July shows this.
All I see from flat earthers is personal incredulity. Things like “it looks flat to me” and not being able to accept that the down direction is toward the center of the earth and not an absolute direction. There are videos of people pouring water on a desktop globe and thinking they proved a point.
I disagree with your explanation. The sun emits lights and HEAT, the amount of heat we receive from the sun is directly proportional to the distance, the further we are from the sun the less heat we receive and the closer we are from the sun the more heat we receive, just like when you cook barbecue. Distance is the reason why we have seasons!
