I just learned that New Orleans has dance parades most of the year, not just Mardi Gras. I'm not really interested in the commercialized fiasco that Mardi Gras likely is, but some lesser known parades sound like a blast. I want to do a loosey-goosey dance down the street, forget my troubles, and have a GOOD time.
Yep! We don’t classify them as parades though. What you’re likely referring to are second lines. They typically occur throughout the year on Sundays. Mardi Gras is simply a period of festivities while second lines are more continuous. Mardi Gras parades are organized by different crews (or “krewes”), such as the Krewe of Zulu or Endymion, while second lines are organized by certain neighborhood clubs, like the “six ward steppers”-wherein most of its members have roots from the six ward of New Orleans.

My Nola people been doing this before the Louisiana purchase. I came with us from the shores of Africa via the bottom of the slave ship. It lived on in the Congo square every Sunday the only day the slaves were allowed to gather. At that gathering they danced on the Congo Square. This history is older than the 19th century

I think we do. I've seen some of the videos from Chi and they are good but the New Orleans second line is different. We dance to brass bands, Chi sounds like they're dancing to Electronica music. Second lines in New Orleans stems from Bamboula music from Africa where only the drums were played. It has more soul to the movements.
