Here we have the other Macross VFX game for PS1. I was very surprised at just how different this game is from the original or rather how similar this game is to every Macross game that came after this one. The base of the gameplay is largely similar, you can change between 3 forms: fighter jet, robot and an inbetween form and each one has it's own niche and somewhat different control scheme. Just as in the first game they're implemented really well making all of them usable. Where this game differs heavily from the original is how the stages are structured. while the first game would drop you in a huge map where you had to cross huge distances yourself to get to enemies, this game went with a more arcade like structure where after an encounter is cleared you're cutscened away to the next fight. There's nothing inherently wrong with the approach from the first game but this change seems to have resonated with the players as every Macross game since used this exact formula. It also allowed for a more cinematic presentation within the stages which is very nice as well. One major difference is that the analogue sticks work now. The music is great, there's lots of original pieces made for this game and the intro was even done by the fictional band from Macross 7. The overall vibe of the story is heavily inspired by Macross + as opposed to SDF Macross like in original which I also really liked. Overall the game is excellent and despite its age and platform it aged like fine wine. If you enjoyed the PSP and PS2 Macross outings you'll feel right at home with VFX 2
yeah there's not that much coverage for the first and second game, likely because of all the copyrighted material and the lawsuit which actually finally got resolved after nearly 40 years
