I didn't expect shinri to get one of his degree from ligma(g) university
Prof Lando is proud
Ha! ... Aww...
Prof should definitely do a lecture on this topic
He's probably magni kum laude
AJAJAJAJAJ
Magni dezmond would be proud
Prof Magni would be so proud of Prof Shinri
Remembers that Shinri has two post graduate degrees.
OH MY
One of them must be from LIGMA university
wait TWO? man got through undergrad and grad school and decided “nah, again”?
He's also a lawyer.
@@theratifier7669 his poor cousins must be so stressed by his resume…
"When I say Astolfo, what is the character that appears in your mind instantly?"
Me: Monster Can
Norse mythology is probably a big victim of this, too. Theoretically, future generations may not know any other version of Thor that isn't the superhero. I'm not saying that WILL happen, but it's not impossible?
The Marvel Thor also made the idea that he and Loki are brothers very prevalent too, when in the original myth the latter was an Oath brother to Odin, so that makes him an "Oath uncle" to Thor I suppose.
@acedias12 The vikings are turning over in their graves, smh.
Lol. I'm just realizing I myself experienced this phenomenon with Greek mythology. My first exposure to it was Disney's Hercules, and for years it was the only the only thing I knew about them. Of course now I know just how very very very "Astolfo'd" that turned out to be... o_o
@@acedias12 I don't know if being blood brothers is anything like being family. I do know that it is why Loki gets away with his shenanigans, though. Because being blood brothers meant that they could only do to Loki what they would do to Odin. But yes, I see people all the time say that Thor and Loki are brothers, which is just plain wrong.
and then there's Disney, which changes the stories a ton to make a "happy ending"
I really liked the manga and anime of Matantei Loki Ragnarok in the day, so my perception of all the greek gods is .... different (and cuter) from most XD .
3:45 that is actually happening to Florence Nightingale's great grandchild; she found out about fate and her fictional great grandmother's thirsty fans. Look it up she did like an ama or something
Interestingly, I recall him mentioning that FGO's depiction of Nightingale being a cold, almost emotionless, and quite ruthless person is pretty close to what he was told about the real Florence Nightingale.
@@jack90054Nasu has been quite good at keeping the core of each characters when adapting them to the Fate universe
@@okinainu yeah, like Jalter seems to embody Jeanne's recorded personality while Jeanne is a mix of public opinions.
@@jack90054people always quote me on that but I thought it was pretty obvious I was joking lmao.
@@jack90054 People forget that Florence Nightingale served a war. She had to pass basic training as a soldier at the very least if she had to serve as a medic.
I think the earliest iteration of the Astolfo Phenomenon was in the 1600s. Don Juan was so much of a charismatic womanizer that his name later turned into the meaning of someone who could make a woman fall for him easily. Originally, people would usually refer Don Juan as the character. It wasn't until the Poem "Don Juan" made by Lord George Gordon Byron 200 years later did the name Don Juan turned into the term Don Juan.
Reminds me of a certain professor.
I knew Shinri has 2 degrees, didn't know at least one was from Ligma University
you mean lando and his lesson being the guy in dress is not gay?
@@FausFaustiusNo no no. I guess it's the liking femboy isn't gay class.
That Buggs bunny/nimrod story is fascinating
This reminds me of that time Chuck Yeager found out about his Strike Witches version, Charlotte Yeager. It was pretty hilarious thing to happen to someone who was still alive at the time. He apparently took it in good humor.
Him mentioning Nimrod reminds me of the X-Men sentinel Nimrod. Before, I thought Nimrod also meant stupid/idiot so when I first came across the character, I was surprised that the writers would name such a terrifying character an idiot. After i learnt the actual meaning, it made sense as to why it was given that name since its a robot that HUNTS mutants.
Nimrod was and always has been an insult. The name "Nimrod" comes from the King who created the Tower of Babel, a tower so high that humanity would reach heaven. For his, and by extension out hubris, God made every worker speak in tongues as to sabotage it. That's why it's call the Tower of Babel
Btw, the thing of being a descendant of a Fate character and seeing their fanart has happened! It's Florence Nightingale's grand nephew and he is aware of the... Cultured art that people make of her.
Tbf, pink hair astolfo is the same character as the one of the 12 knights of Charlemagne. It's just that the internet's knowledge of Astolfo broke beyond the Fate franchise. In fact, Astolfo also plays a part in the latest story chapter of the Fate Grand Order NA server.
Not only that but I feel like Agartha also destroyed Astolfo (and Chevalier d’eon)’s character writing and its been messed up ever since so Astolfo got Astolfo’d by Agartha version.
that specific NA update, Traum, did justice on Astolfo's image as a proper knight, imo. both Astolfo and Roland showed their more serious side instead of just overusing their "meme" side. I really appreciate Traum for that.
Florence Nightingale has a living descendant as a great grand nephew and has discovered said fan art of her, so there's that one example. Oh, and Van Gogh has a living descendant as well, but I'm unsure if he knows about FGO's depiction...
Yeah but Van Gogh is a weird one because they are only like 5% Van Gogh, they are mostly a nymph
She also seemed to like biting as a kink
@@DarkhalfBreedcan u explain why Van Gogh's feet in FGO looks horrifying?
Basically every Fate character.
Reminds me of Gaijin Goombah's "Naruto-ification" of Japanese historical/folklore figures.
That name is a flashbang of old memories
@@redline841 I mean, he's still around, y’know...
@@shakachoarroyo
I know, but I haven't heard his name dropped at all these days.
@redline841 feels bad, that's literally "fell off" status.
@@shakachoarroyo not really, he has always been pretty niche even during the height of Game Theory. Audience has changed and GG does his own thing now. Rather have my creators fall off and be happy making content than seeing them lose touch
I wonder how many people know the correlation between Son Goku and Sun Wukong.
You know, I did a presentation about this in class
I have nothing but pog for this man.
Same with Hetalia, the characters pop up in my brain alongside a general history of the country's in question. Its really a problem lol
I have this issue often when I’m looking into an old philosophical or religious term and all the results are about marvel comics and anime. The worst is when I could search the term perfectly fine before but some time later all the legitimate results get buried under the weight of people discussing the popular media using its name. Genshin has probably done this to me the most recently but it can be from all kinds of things
If you play or watch Fate you know these are historical figures. You wouldn't not know unless you don't actually watch Fate.
1:48 Not surprising, especially since Shinri works in an agency where a part of its surge of popularity was because of being involved with such media.
Astolfo wasn't a real person, but yes, he is a fictional character from history. He was actually very masculine, if I recall.
The cross dressing in Fate is a reference to a time he crossdressed to cheer up Charlemagne while he was depressed. Of course in the original it was probably supposed to cheer him up by looking funny, having this big strong masculine knight cross dressing. In Fate I guess he cheered him up by being cute and silly, or something.
Uma Musume
Their names are irl horses too
That is a double-edged sword for sure
The Astolfo effect is a pretty interesting phenomenom, idk how much is the searcher's fault and how much is the product's. But that's life ig
Irrc, the round table Knights weren't originally in the legent but I'm still not sure if that's right
at least in Uma Musume's case the horse owner has the rights to dictate and even vetoed the characters. like, the characters won't come out unless it got an ok from the owner(s). I believe some owners cancelled their green light on a few horses because the initial concept didn't sit well with them.
I think Astolfo phenomenon is good overall, since, alot of the knowledge behind the characters would have stayed completely hidden in the bookshelves away from the minds of the public if not for the Authors creatively making their characters inspired off of them.
As I said, it's a double-egded sword for sure
But tbh Fate sure inspires me to research more about some stuff. Specially prehispanic stuff
"It also happens to various gunships and warships--"
And guns. See M4 SOPMOD II.
I think Lando needs to invite Shinri as a substitute teacher
Damn I was not expecting to be educated by shinri today. But actually interesting though, I always thought nimrod was an insult.
First thing that comes to my head is Monster Energy.
I don't even play FGO why did I ever think of that Astolfo... oh
Would definitely enroll in his school if he ever decided to build one! xD
Because once your warned about a trap, you will always remember its a trap.
Ok so the Astolfo phenomenon is fine. BUT actually Nimrod is a real person too!! A god of the hunt?! Wait a minute my mind is blown..
Nimrod in Fate when?
Isn't Nimrod the guy who built the Tower of Babel?
@@squashn.695he's in the arcade game isn't he? As like, a gilface.
@@redline841 Yes. He built the Tower of Babel because he believed the Babylonians were the superior tribe and built a tower to equal that of the gods.
I thought this about how the astolfo the fgo character making people fall in love with beautiful boys
3:45 This reminded me of that one descendant of Nightingale who found out about the FGO character and...well, the rule34 of her.
Just think of it as Fate universe is an alternate universe different from ours. All is solved! *With fate verse being the right proper timeline when ours is a lostbelt/wrong timeline that needs to be destroyed*

The KanColle phenomenon is similar to TouRabu then lol. Except it's actual Japanese historical weapons becoming anime husbandos or cuties XD
Before astolfo Ive also experience the same thing with star trek spaceship i think its called enterprise little did i know its actually a real ship name.
Magni, at his part-time alchemy professor job: "You were well trained my young apprentice... Alright class! Today we're gonna learn about...
*taps on board* the Magnussy"
I remember the memes about getting pics of the red "umu" saber waifu whenever you google "Nero Claudius"...
But I also just remembered that for some reason my country has adapted the tv show "Monk" as a slang term to insult someone because it lost almost all of its original meaning (being a neat freak since the main character was one).
Imagine people thinking of dragon ball when son goku is mentioned, not knowing that son goku originates from the ancient chinese myth 'A journey to the west'. Also that original was named wukong, son goku is the name in the japanese adaption of the original tale.
The worst thing about it is that the Fate series is FAR from the only franchise to have this effect. Like for example, if I mention the names “Dante” or “Virgil”, there’s a 9/10 chance of you’d immediately think of Devil May Cry, rather than the Divine Comedy, which is what DMC is (loosely) inspired by.
There are plenty of other examples I could’ve given, such as the Persona series, or Megami Tensei in general (and don’t even get me started on Disney), but I don’t wanna be here all day.
well, i mean.. if my teacher look like him, i'll gladly sit and hear him talk for hours, i don't mind :"D
It's a bit sad when the more recent version of a name or word supercedes the oroginal meaning. But hopefully at least in regards to the Astolfo phenomenon, where real world things are turned into anime characters, people might become inspired to find and learn about origin of the person or thing who the character is named after!
That is actually a rather common phenomenon in Japan. Like when Antonio Salieri (Mozart's friend/rival) became a popular FGO servant, his autobiography became a best-seller in Japan for a few weeks.
So much so that publishers have printed FGO chars on autobiography advertisements to help sales.
@@jack90054 Haiyore! Nyaruko-san was the reason HP Lovecraft's novels became best-sellers in Japan.
Happened to alot of Fate/ character actually.
Someone who actually a great great great grandnephew of Florence Nightingale also once commented that he was very baffled with many "good" fanart and how Fate potray his great great aunt lmao.
thinking about all the conversations i've wanted to have about osamu dazai over the years because "no longer human" is such an interesting book, but all anyone wants to talk about that guy from bungou stray dogs 😔
Kancolle taught me about World War II better and FGO taught me about mythology and history better.
I think there's a way to rehabilitate Nimrod: Make him a Fate character! (Apparently he does appear in a Fate fan story though not in official material, at least not based on short googling.)
Nimrod is pretty much Fate material.
He's a Babylonian King, God of Hunters, and the ancestor of Uruk nobility, including Nebuchadnezzar and Gilgamesh.
The Tower of Babel would suit him as a Noble Phantasm, but he was actually recorded to have been gifted the Sharur, a powerful mace that belonged to the Sumerian God of Hunting Ninurta, and was stolen by Ishtar as a trophy, and eventually returned to its "rightful place" beside Nimrod, making him the new God of Hunters.
The Tower of Babel is an interesting broken Aesop. Nimrod believed Babylonians were the superior tribe, so he built the titular tower to become the academic, economic and bureaucratic center of his kingdom - a testament to Babylonia being the center of civilization and unifier of past kingdoms. God struck his tower down for his hubris and collectively punished humanity by taking away all of our common language, dividing us.
@@thetravellerx5676 In the Bible, he's also the great-grandson of Noah.
How many people know anything about Raphael or Donatello, renaissance artists?
Prof Mag would be pround
given that the only astolfo i knew are from anime, i don't really think it is that "something" of an "effect".
and most people probably won't knew the name crassus except historian or some geek
