  • Show date 10th April 2017. Not the full concert sadly, but three tunes and two clips is better than nowt.
    00:04 Texas
    08:08 Proto Cosmos
    17:52 Red Alert
29:17 Devil Take The Hindmost (part)
31:29 Devil... again - different angle
You probably know who the chaps are, but the not so well-known Mahesh Balasooriya on keyboards here was (I believe) a first-time collaboration.

People complain about Allan not being recognized. To me he got a perfect score in life as a musician. A hundred percent original, got better and better even as he got older. Afforded a home for his family. Sure he had hardships as well but who doesn't? What he didn't do is get a gig in a cha cha band in the Caribbean somewhere. He played what he wanted to, and never gave up learning. These last solos are so focused and articulate. He did his last gig, played his ass off, and left. If only most of us could be so lucky.

Only a few days left to live and he sounds great. His legend will only continue to grow. As long as rock and roll exists, there will always be guitar players. And as long as there are guitar players, there are people who will discover Allan Holdsworth.

I saw Allan at least 10 times between the late 70's and 2008...he was just so far ahead of everything else, a beautiful musician and mild mannered man.

What an absolute diamond of a musician. It's always eerie to watch legends like this playing just days before their death.

Saw Allan over 20 times from 84 till he last past through northeast… talked to him every time, had dinner with him and the band several times, had beers at the bar… I’m shocked people are talking while he’s playing!

He clearly loved music and performing right to the end, still playing with his incredible technique even at 70 years of age. What a remarkable person and musician.

Such a damn monster of a player. It’s one thing to grow up listening to his albums, but in a live context (and to pile-on the context of his age/health), it’s just jaw-dropping. I miss him greatly.

A unique and colossal talent. His work will be studied for decades, a la Charlie Parker.

Clearly he had so much more to give to both life and to music. It’s tragic he was taken so soon. It’s amazing to see him guns blazing until the end. I might add that seeing him shrouded in silhouette in this footage gives a poignancy to the fact that he would be gone not too long after. Thank you for posting and RIP Allan

I only got to see him twice. The Secrets tour and once with Chad Wackerman on drums in the early to mid 200s.. Having never heard Vinnie Colaiuta before, I was dumbfounded. He was reading a few of the tunes as well and playing out of his mind! It took me the better part of a song and a half to even figure out where "ONE" was!
Virgil was leaving Allan a bit in the dust here, but the bassist kept it together and was cueing Allan to keep him on track.
Allan Holdsworth and many of his bandmates come along once in a lifetime. We are so fortunate to have heard his music.

I remember back in the 90's I saw him play. opening bill was Ronnie Montrose. After Ronnie did his set, he walked up to the sidebar where I was ordering a frosty one. I Did the fan thing, (awesome) Ronnie. Then I asked if I could buy him a drink, and he said sure. While waiting I asked him what he though about Holdsworth's playing, and he gave me this weird, sincere look and said his playing gave him nightmares and is truly amazing cat. WOW

Was lucky enough to see him 3 times during his prime years. What a genius. No doubt that when he died, he went back to the unique planet he came from, because he's beyond human on guitar. Love him, will miss him. Took guts to do this gig knowing his condition at the time. He sounds like he's low on energy/form here, understandably so. What an amazing talent. They WILL be studying him for decades to come, no doubt. Rightfully so.

Allan Holdsworth is in the same sentence as Leonardo DaVinci, Albert Einstein, William Shakespeare, Steven Spielberg, etc. Once every 500 years someone comes along who pushes us forward into a new age of thinking and seeing the world.
