  • Every Wednesday night at 7pm PST I critique my students work and give tips on how to get better at art and portraiture. In this 2 hour session as I go over students drawings I cover possible motivations for why we draw portraits, value structure, planes of the face, edges, halftones and design strategies. Thank you!
On U-Draw fb group, I have noticed lack of friendly critique among students posting their work(s), only WoW great and so on... Tried to provoke them, to write something other than "Like-Love" as "Caravaggio" user name - nope. I even wrote an "essay" by lengthy paragraphs - what to do or avoid doing, light, squint, angles, layers and how to see. All from my amateur point of view and limited knowledge bits picked up here and there, from various teachers and sources.
THAT failed as well, for I become "smart ass, "know-a-lot" untouchable - and nobody critiques my work again. Are they afraid to insult, politically correct hand brake in action, or whatever I don't know...
SO GREATFULL, and so happy to see a teacher who can take the time to help us “art birds” take off and show our artistic spirit, but not to fly to fast and high too close to the Sun.
Thank you again Chris for sharing your huge knowledge with us and fixing us from fundamentals to details.

I would only disagree on light direction @ 1:02:55. Because daylight comes from right side window - more sideways than overhead. Because of child's head slightly tilted and turned to the right (window) , we don't see darkness under the nose, shadows over and under the lips, or upper lip completely dark, no chin shadow t-shirt collar "rim" projecting a shadow to the left - NOT UPPER LIGHT head shadow. But side window light, that is towering above this child and reflected light from the ceiling for mid tones. I am getting the LIGHT source trajectory from right eye iris reflection (brightest patch). That patch can be extended as tangent line - which with right angle line is pointing toward brightest light source. The same way as squinting shows darker elliptical masses, right angled line to the "shadow mass central axis" points again toward window - low upper position, not high as Bunny right ear, in my humble opinion but that could be wrong. Am I reading light sources wrong way, or is that "diffuse light" so complicated to decode as one major source?
