About univerisities. I think everyone can assume it's, at least, weird that there are more universities in Germany or in Russia that have Catalan language and literature as a subject to study than in Spain. When I studied philology I was amazed at that phenomenon. But I've always thought it would be interesting to learn all languages spoken in the Spain, also Galician and Basque. They are a treasure to be taken care. I usually don't feel this "appreciation" from the Spanish side. IMHO.
Catalan is a language studied in universities all over the world. One of its particular qualities is that it was the first language in which prose was written in the Medieval Age by Ramon Llull when all was written in Latin. It's older than Spanish and its first writings date from the Xth century. It's spoken by 10 million people nowadays.

Reading some commentaries made by Spanish I understand why more and more people in Catalonia are asking for independence. So sad to see how people show disrespect towards a nation if it's supposed to be part of their state. NOthing like that would ever happen to Scotland by UK.
@Rivvil @Rivvil @Rivvil I am a philologist and I can tell you when we are talking about bilingual societies, like ours, speakers count as speakers of both languages, a different situation would be that lived in Belgium where who speaks French normally doesn't speak Dutch and the other way round.

I think our bilingual status is a richness not an inconvenience and I would never say I am not a speaker of Spanish or to be discounted of the "speakers' census" because my mother tongue is Catalan. I command perfectly both languages.

En serio, si quieres te lo traduzco. Con la practica de escuchar y leer la traduccion te darias cuenta de que los dos idiomas son bastante parecidos, seguramente mas de lo que pensabas.

That number is incorrect, since it's 10 millions who CAN speak it, but that doesn't mean they speak it. It takes into account the population of the regions where it's spoken (including outside Spain), but that doesn't mean each speaks it. I'm from Mallorca, I CAN speak it, but I don't do it since I'm Castillian speaker. So that's minus one speaker to that list. Also, Catalan is offered in a very reduced amount of universities, "all over the world" is an exaggeration. Don't be demagogic.
