I love this song because it perfectly captures the essence, the feeling of what it is to truly fall in love and have the realization that you are willing to risk almost anything for one person. The song starts out by saying "Are you ready? Ready for this life?", meaning the singer has realized she has reached a deep level of attachment in her relationship, maybe she's thinking about children, or marriage .But at the same time, she knows what she's feeling isn't permanent, and it could very well go the other way. She's "tracing figure eights", or writing infinity signs, "on ice in skates". In other words, she's confident in saying her love is eternal, yet is keenly aware that her relationship has the inevitability of falling apart someday. She's skating on thin ice. It's almost like marriage, in the way we make our vows saying we'll spend our lives with another being, all the while we know we're taking a risk, because it will end one day.
And yet, we still fall hard, knowing fully that there is an expiration date to love, "It won't last forever/ Or maybe it will" whether it be a break-up, seperation, divorce, or death, we are so frail to this inevitable truth. Love dies, but we still let it consume us.
The song is called PPP because of the nature of love, the "Piss Poor Planning" aspect of it. We never expect to fall in love, but when it does, it is so strong, and so many of us are not ready for it.
I just adore the ending of the song because it's such a cathartic embodiment of how exactly this feels, the madness of spending your life with one person, the craziness, the melancholia of possibly leaving them, and the never- ending joy of having another soul love you as much as you love them.

What you said resonated with me in a crazy way because I found out about this song through my friend , and when she played it I immediately knew that I was in love with her , but could never say anything because of various reasons, but I fell in love with beach house and always think about her when I hear the record , especially this song . The other day I asked her what she thought about when she heard this song ? And she smiled , and said a lot of things . Then she said that she thinks about me when she hears it , and I was stoked cause I do too, but I feel like a big part of falling in love had to do with this song and I've just been trying to find the meaning in it , because it feels like something really deep and I think you're the closest explanation i could find ! Proud to say that this song was playing when I first realized I was falling in love with my boyfriend. He had never heard of Beach House before, but the song struck an emotional cord with him and he actually asked me later on in our relationship if this could be the song we play if we ever get married. So thank you Beach House, for writing the soundtrack to my life in my 20s.

This was me and my husbands first dance song at our wedding. It was a beautiful outdoor wedding, and it was a truly magical moment dancing to this song while it started lightly raining. Our 1 year anniversary is only 2 weeks away and I plan to dance to this song with him again.

i went to a beach house concert two days ago and i can’t even explain how this song broke me when they played it, i cried like haven’t cried in such a long time, it was so intimate and comforting, it felt like everything around me was holding me so tenderly. I felt so small in the universe but not alone. Truly one of the best experiences i’ve ever lived and provably the best night of my life.

people keep talking about how this is about falling in love. i keep thinking how its about the hardship of mental health. it makes me think that a nurturing mother like figure is caring for me and telling me that challenges and dark times happen in life, and there are some hard truths that i must face but she knows i can get through it. it feels like shes a nurturing goddess with infinite knowledge i guess.
To me this song is about falling in love with a very special person and starting to have a beautiful relationship.

The protagonist gives himself the guilt of wanting an everlasting relationship. The figure eights metaphorically mean like longing for eternity or at least something that lasts a long time. He wants it so badly and has hopes in his heart: "It won't last forever
Or maybe it will". He learnt in his life that this kind of love is something one needs to desire. Like a very high goal. : " Someone once told me

But the other person is not able to reflect the same feelings the protagonist has. In his heart

The melody of the song really transmits this battle between having hopes and simply breaking inside because of the feeling that it is not working the way the protagonist is longing for. He always asks himself: "Do I want it too much? Is it my fault".
