Especially when she learns she could have left day one. There's another show called Futurama, in case you haven't heard of it, it's an animated show about a delivery boy in the future. They also do a spoof and one of the main characters, Leela, wishes to be a witch instead of going home. Cinematic gold, pure fantasy come true, type viewings.

Dorothy’s wish wasn’t just to go home, it was to go back to her home exactly the way it was. If her aunt and uncle knew that she and the house had been gone, they would be dealing with loads of trauma, thinking she was dead. It’d be a while before things could settle back to normal for them. So I think it’s likely that the slippers sent her and the house back, and then altered the memories of her aunt, uncle, and farmhands so that they’d think she’d been there all along, unconscious. Of course that likely wasn’t the intent of the filmmakers, but it’s fun to realize that the movie’s presentation can still be interpreted that way, if one chooses to.
No, it was definitely a dream. Why else would they create five characters who weren't in the book? The book had no farm hands, no Miss Gulch, and no Professor Marvel. Producer Mervyn LeRoy was under orders to keep the fantasy a fantasy and not a reality, so those characters were created to be the templates of the characters Dorothy met in Oz, and the events of the day set up the events in the dream.
The house was a wash. Uncle Henry borrowed funds to build a new one. Then took Dorothy to Australia with him for a rest and she fell off the boat during a storm. That leads us to book 3. Ozma of Oz
I think part of Dorothy wanted to go home, and part of her wanted to stay in Oz. I know she loves ❤️ and dreams to be the land of Oz, but she doesn't want to leave behind her family, her farm, and everything she holds, dear. She didn't want to hurt her family. I think that was the point of her character arc.
What I suggest is that they could have kept the color in the ending because I believe its more symbolic as that not only did she learnt the lesson of "There's no place like Home" but also revealed that she now has a true color in herself as she finally a new girl, not from Oz, but from Kansas

I think I would rather have stayed in OZ with Glinda. Living in Munchkin Land. Returning back to this world would be like if you had a taste of the spiritual world with it's many realms, and then sent back here. It would be back to humdrum black and white in terms of this life.

In the MGM movie, Dorothy dreamed her whole Oz adventure. In _Return to Oz,_ as in the book, Oz is real, and at the end we see the completed replacement house that Uncle Henry built. It's only in the MGM movie that the Wicked Witch says the shoes won't come off as long as Dorothy's alive, though she's probably mistaken. In the book, Dorothy is able to take the shoes off any time she bathes or goes to sleep. They fall off of her feet as she's transported back to Kansas and are never seen again in the 40-book Oz canon.
