  • South Africa's ICJ case of genocide against Israel for its war with Hamas in Palestine has shaken up the international world order.

Nelson Mandela stated after South Africa attained democratic rule that “we South Africans cannot feel free until the Palestinians are free.”
In this episode we give you the full tea on the war in Gaza, Palestine, the ICJ genocide case and it's connection to the complex South Africa-Israel situationship.
From some shared origins back in 1948, South African apartheid and Israel share a lot in common. On the other hand, the South African ANC government post-1994 has expressed a lot of support for the Palestinian people's quest for self-determination.
Join comedians KG Mokgadi and Céline Tshika and the award-winning Politically Aweh team as we explain the conflict and the reason South Africa got involved. We speak to experts including researcher Vanessa Farr, who has lived for many years in Palestine and grew up under South Africa's apartheid system, and Zeenat Adam, the Deputy Executive-Director at the Afro-Middle East Centre. We also reached out to Jamie Rosengarten from South African Jews for a Free Palestine to find out what makes this issue so personal for many South African jews.

NO you are MISREPRESENTING the issue, post-World War Two there was no Israel state and the international community was posing ideas how to crave up the ancient Israel kingdom into three parts, they gave all the lands east of the Jordan river to a new state they had created in 1922, and were now deciding how to crave up the lands east of the river. On 29 Nov' 1947 the UN decided how it wanted to crave up the reminder between two states, the Jews celebrated and the Arab / Muslim population declared war on religious lines (well there had also been increased in that violence since 1936). Because the Muslim population had regional support and what the called an army they expected to win, they surrounded and besieged Jerusalem to starve that population while combating the rest elsewhere; however in an unexpected twist the Jews managed to liberate their brethren in Jerusalem and were winning instead of loosing ground. The Arab population then agreed and signed a truce, after which the Jewish population declared independence as a state they called Israel.

One should have mentioned though that after the attacks in October 2023, Israel although killing 25k civilians, was still exposed to constant rocket attacks from within Gaza which led to further bombing and the eventual ground attack to stop Hamas killing Israeli. In the clip it sounded like a lopsided tit for tat while actually the aggression from Hamas was ongoing.

Great explanation. I think the analysis that SA lodged the ICJ case because of historic geopolitical reasons is a good one. It certainly can't be for moral, ethical or reasons of principle given South Africa's hypocritical actions protecting genocidal Sudanese leaders and its defacto support for Russia's imperialist invasion of Ukraine.

There are some major historic omissions, lacking context... demonstrating bias. "the reading from the same script" line goes both ways. The reality is that SA has been silent on other cases of actual genocide happening elsewhere in the world. The vid is not objective(if that was the aim)

You are correct in your statement and what put me off the whole video was the greeting of comrades...which clearly I am not one. Lots of cherry picking and too much bias to communisim and Marxism. No mention of course of who funded the ANC out of bankruptcy and who paid for the ANC yearly buffet and election campaigns this year. The ANC is clearly in the black now and after the SONA and Ramapbosa's reference to OUR people and only mentioning Black business, projects, etc...and no mention of minorities plus EWC and NHI and BEE, BBBEE one wonders "what next"?

Arafat made it clear that the goal was not the land, but the destruction of Israel. the whole "occupation, genocide, apartheid Israel" is a script

A few comments on the video :
2:23 : "post world war 2, the 1948 establishment of israel displaced palestinians". Putting it that way makes it sound like the land was a sovereign state populated by palestinians only. In reality, the land had been a british mandate for the previous 30 years, prior to which it was part of the ottoman empire. Moreover, while the population was predominantly muslim, there had always been a jewish minority on the land. For obvious reasons, that minority was largely inflated by european jews fleeing Europe throughout the first half of the century. So in 1948, palestine was a land under british control, populated by jews and muslims. The UN decided to split the land between the two populations. The jews accepted and were ready to share the land with the palestinians, while the arabs categorically refused to recognize the state of israel. This is what lead to the first israeli arab war, during which the palestinians were displaced. The video conveniently ignores all that nuance...
2:38 : "An increasingly repressive, right wing israeli gouvernement has made life for palestinians very difficult. Especially those living here, in the Gaza strip". Interesting how the video forgets to tell how in 2005, israel actually decided unilaterally to leave the Gaza strip (that is, to remove all the israeli citizens living in the Gaza strip), and to grant the palestinians total control over the territory. Perhaps even more interestingly, the video fails to mention how within a year, the palestinians organized their first democratic election, which Hamas won (I would assume that Hamas doesn't need to be presented, but it seems important to remind that it is widely recognized as a terrorist organisation, and their charter explicitely states their objective of destroying Israel). Hamas then proceeded to violently get rid of all elements of the palestinian authority in the Gaza strip, and subsequently started firing rockets into Israel, which lead the latter to enforce a blockade on the Gaza strip. In particular, since Israel has no control over the governance of the strip after 2005, bringing up the right wing government as the reason for the harsh living conditions in the Gaza strip is anachronistic, since that government was only elected in 2022. By that time, the Gaza strip had been autonomous for over 15 years, so the right wing government actually had no impact at all on the lives of the gazans.
2:58 : "Under the worsening conditions, it was only a matter of time before a retaliation of Hamas". As mentionned before, the blockade on the strip came as a reaction to the agression of Hamas.
3:38 : the casualities count shown is not only misleading, but actually false. First, Hamas inflicted over 1400 casualities on israel. Yes, some of them were soldiers, but similarly, it is estimated that about a third of the palestinian casualities are Hamas militants. Why would you remove the israeli soldiers from the israeli death count, but not the Hamas militants from the palestinian death count ? In addition, you are clearly misinformed about the number of hostages taken on October 7th : 136 hostages is the number that remained after the prisonners exchange that occured by the end of november. Hamas actually took more than 240 hostages. Moreover, if israel decided to inflict exactly as many victims on the palestinian side as were inflicted on Israel on the October 7th massacre, then this would be an act of revenge. The objective of israel is not to take revenge, but to eliminate Hamas. The latter is firmly entrenched within Gaza, and is known to use human shields tactics, which lead to huge casualities on the palestinian side.
4:33 : it is written explicitely that the meaning of genocide is any act committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, racial, ethnical or religious group. As said earlier, the objective of the israeli operation is to eliminate hamas. Of course, you could argue that the stated objective is a lie. Let's hear your arguments.
4:43 : " the deputy speaker of israel's parliament has called for the erasure of the Gaza strip from the face of the earth." Some context would be very welcome here. This announcment came at the very beginning of the ground invasion of the Gaza strip, when the israeli army was still adjusting to the situation. In particular, one of the major dilemmas that they were facing was, to what extent should tsahal endanger the lives of israeli soldiers in order to avoid civilian casualities. If a building was known to house hamas operations, but civilians might also live in there, should tsahal send in a group of soldiers to clear the building and try to spare the civilians, thereby endangering their soldiers (which are all conscripts), or should they just call an air strike on the building ? These concerns are more than valid, given that hamas openly bragged about inflicting casualities on tsahal by booby trapping large portions of the residential areas of the Gaza strip. At what point does israel say "enough soldiers were lost by trying to clear buildings rather than just bombing them" ? These moral dilemmas are imposed to tsahal by hamas, and the deputy speaker of the knesset was adressing them. One can argue about whether the tactics applied by tsahal are justified, but allegations of genocide cannot be infered from this declaration.
7:32 : "there's a whole different set of rules that applies to them [the palestinians]." After 1948, while some of the palestinian population that lived in Israel were displaced, a large portion of that population stayed in Israel, and recieved the israeli citizenship. Their descendents (which are now called the israeli arabs) now have full israeli citizenship, are represented in the israeli parliament, and the only difference in the ruled they have to follow is that they are not required to serve in the army. On the other hand, let's consider the palestinian population that lives in the West bank and the Gaza strip. Both territoires were annexed during the six days war (which was started by Egypt and Syria), and the population did not receive the israeli citizenship, since the long term objective was to create a palestinian state that would cover both territories. Consequently, these populations do not fall under israeli law. However, the discrepancy in the set of rules that apply to both cannot be attributed to racism or some sort of apartheid, as shown by the mere existence of the israeli arabs.
8:02 : "during 1967, Israel annexed even further land". The video completely fails to tell how the land was annexed after the six days war, which was declared after Egyptian president Nasser announced his plan to destroy Israel and closed the strait of Tiran, a vital economic corridor, to israeli ships. Moreover, the lands annexed during that war were not palestinian, but egyptian, jordanian and syrian.

And the jews that lived there before 1948 had no issues with Palestinians. They never kicked them from their homes and land. The British had no business there, they were colonialists. So the 1948 settlers were the main problem as they still are today.

@@helenduplessis4166 Look, let me make an analogy that illustrates my point. 3 criminals rob a bank, one of them is caught and 2 get away. The one that got caught cannot claim that he can’t be prosecuted because he didn’t commit the crime alone. In like manner holding the Israeli government accountable for their wrongs is not disingenuous just because there are other evils being committed else where.
