What a video. You wrapped the whole picture, with a smart sense of humor. The approach, the story was excellent and you closed it to perfection. Amazing. Bravo!!!
Love these tippet rings! Tying a dropper directly to the tippet ring works great! I was slaying trout this past weekend. Got two trout on one line for the first time! Loads of fun!
Changed my life. With my eyes, tying a surgeon's knot feels like I'm trying to braid a lanyard out of spiderweb. Clinch knots is more my speed, especially when working with variegated background, like water and vegetation. In addition, the easier it is to change tippet, the less likely you are be tolerant of wind knots, and other issues that could come back to haunt you. Don't know how I lived without them.
Bang on video! Found these this last summer and knew immediately how I could use 'em like this but never did. A good reminder to follow through on great ideas. Hat's off to everyone else who did!
I'm just getting into fly fishing and really appreciate the knowledge shared. I also appreciate your creativity of using Barbie to help with the presentation. Much more enjoyable than many DIY show and tells. Thank you.
Your model is gorgeous!! Lol. Thanks for the tips-I think I'm convinced to use them now, especially when kids keep cutting back my leader to about 2 feet!!
Although I've used rings while dry fly fishing and liked them, I do primarily use them for nymphing and streamer fishing. Most of the time I fish with my own hand tied 9 foot leaders that have a built in sighter. They also have a fairly substantial butt section for casting larger streamers. In just a few hours of fishing I may change tippet sizes 5 or 6 times so the rings really help to speed the process and keep the full length of those leaders intact.
Very informative since I had no idea either tippet rings, or tiny swivels existed. I learned to tie flies as a hobby last February. Never have learned to fly fish. I have a sick wife and am caring for her at home. God willing I will learn about the other 2/3 of the sport sometime soon. Thanks for sharing I learn a lot from your video's. All the best to you, Sean
or simply attach a tippet ring ring to a 9ft 3x leader to start with..like i do..i use them 100% of the time now..no more guessing what size my tippet section is anymore after numerous fly changes..ive gone from 3x rite to 6x tippet for dry flies with no issue at all....and you can always tie a dropper off the ring at anytime..great item for sure.
Ha ha this video is perfect, made my day. Thanks for the helpful advice! Very informative, and will add a whole new exciting element to my fishing and casting
One tippet ring tip I only recently thought about after using tippet rings for a long time. When I use furled leaders on western rods, I join tippet to the leader with an improved clinch knot. And for the last few years I've used tippet rings to join tippet to Tenkara fluorocarbon level lines. For both I would also use an improved clinch to tie on the fly. But when I'd snag an overhead or underwater branch all too often I was losing my up to three feet of tippet along with the fly. Recently I began using the slightly weaker Orvis knot to tie on my fly. Since starting that I haven't lost any tippet to a snag or had a fish break off the fly.
Switched over to tippet rings and haven't regretted it since. They reduce the frustration level, calms the cussing, and get's me back to fishing faster. What's not to like about that?
So I asked this question on a different forum, but do you feel like these rings affect your presentation at all? I mean would you use these if you're fishing a super clear spring creek where the slightest irregularity in presentation can ruin a good day? These really intrigue me. I've always built my own leaders, just connecting 3 sections of tippet together with a knot, but not only is it a pain in the butt having to do this on the river but I don't like the fact that it crests 3 areas where a knot can break if I have a slab fish on. I've always wanted to switch to pre-made leaders and this may help enforce that. Also, don't hate, educate, I'm still fairly new to fly fishing and a lot of things still confuse me a bit. I appreciate any advice I can get, thanks folks!
Not to brag, but I use tiny rings as soon as I had enough of buying new knotless leaders. As they quickly became shorter after every new tippet attache. I used to clip every sort of small and tiny rings from swivels and such. Now-a-days you can buy them luckely special for this. Only on some holidays in countries with such clear water and spooky fish I sometimes like to "offer" a clean tapered knotles leader attached to a nice dry. But for the mayority, these rings are super practical in every way.
Haha this was so awesome. Love your videos man. Very helpful too. I had no idea what a tippet ring was before this. I'll have to try that, I change my tippet all the time so this seems like it would be helpful. Thanks.
I had no idea that these existed! I tried doing something like this with little o-rings off of crank baits, but those were to big. I will really have to get some of these.
I liked the idea so much I ran right out and bought some. Now if only the ice was off the water... Anyway, I found out the hard way that you should do some online price comparisons before buying these things. I bought some at a local retailer (was a regional chain) for $9.99 only to discover shortly thereafter that you can get 2-3 times as many for just a few dollars more on either Amazon or eBay. You live, you learn, I guess :)
You can also use the ring to attach a dropper fly or maybe an indicator that is sort of auxillery, or attached by its own length of Tippet to get a more natural action of the fly. Make sure to use coarse line to attach the indicator, so it won't tangle while casting.
I like to use those swivels for my streamer fishing and I found them useful under some windy conditions casting large bushy dry flies. Twisted leaders- drive me nuts. Since I started using the 3mm rings, some 10 years ago - there is a knotless leader on my 4wt that I is going on its 8 season. I figure that leader seen 400 days of fishing and a lot of trout.
I just noticed that this was made in 2013 so I forgive you for using a tool, one of which I once had, which apparently no longer is available on planet earth, the Mike-rite gage. I realized, after watching this, that mine has gone missing and spent a couple hours online trying to find one...Mike-Rite, the Orvis one, the Fishpond one...zip. If you know of a secret stash of them somewhere, put me first in line to get one, please!
Yes they're great especially if your fishing near brush and need to tear off it breaks cleanly at the ring. Tie on new tippet and a fly and you're good to go.
TRICK: I take my hackle plier (E-Z Hook style) and place it around the snap between the ring I want to use and the remainder of the rings. I haven't tied a knot around the snap, tied the wrong ring or lost a tippet ring since I started doing that. I'm sure I'm the only one that has ever struggled with any of the former, but; just in case.
Im just starting to use tippet rings. Just like to know why you snip off two feet from the tapered leader? Is this just a general measurement or can this vary?
Tim, I see one person commented below that tippet rings even work when changing to dry flies. Have you had any personal experience with these rings and dry fly fishing? I don't know their effect but it appears they might create micro drag. I'm considering using them as it seems like an on stream time saver and my youngest son will be more efficient changing Tippett material on stream. He hasn't perfected the blood knot yet.
Switch to a double surgeons... much faster than a double blood. admittedly it does not have quite the same strength. Great option for quick changes though
I give the knot and the leader just above it a check every time I change the tippet that attaches to the other side of the ring. I can't recall ever having that knot (the one that attaches the leader to the ring) break.
I'm weird. I'll tie on a tippet ring then I put the tipped through the ring and tie a clinch around the butt section. Basically turning the tippet ring into a loop knot. This transfers the cast power through more directly reduces the hinge but still let's me swap tippet at a set point. I can withdraw the clinch knot and tie another every 4 or 5 new tippers I cut off the ring and slip all the clinch knots off then redo the butt tippet connection
A very instructive video, so well done that I chose to embed it in our web site: FlyFishUSA in our Fly Fishing Leader Accessories section, hope you don't mind, and hope it gets you a few more hits. Thanks, Mark
Can you not just tie the ring to whatever the size of your leader is and match the tippet to it on the other end of the ring. Or start with a larger leader size and use a smaller size tippet for the end so it tapers? Do u cut it back so the line is thicker and will float the ring easier? I would love to try it using dry flies just to see if it stays floating. Good for break offs too. I know small swivels work well too under an indicator or for wet use. A smaller ring would be nice.
You can place the ring just about anywhere on the leader you want. You just don't want too much of a step down in size from one side of the ring to the other. Rarely do I jump down more than one size. The large majority of my trout leaders taper from the butt down to 4x, then the ring, then 2 to 3 feet of 5x tippet. I've never had a problem with the rings shown in the video sinking dry flies even very small ones like 22's.
Those are so awesome. I have never seen them before. I am going to get me some. Haha. Thanks man, I subscribed to your channel, lots of good stuff on there.
tightlinevideo thanks to this video I have started using tippet rings and think they are great. They float on the surface and even on occasion attract fish to strike.
Mitchell Bandy this is typically used for nymphing only, mostly euro nymphing. You would not want to use this for dry flys it would pull the fly down which you don't want
Fun video...At 0:38, "And whenever you're messing around with leaders, a leader gauge is a wonderful tool to have."Why? Man, I've been in fly fishing for tens of years, built gobs of light and heavy duty leaders, and I'm not sure that I ever missed out by not having or using a leader gauge.
What a video.
You wrapped the whole picture, with a smart sense of humor.
The approach, the story was excellent and you closed it to perfection. Amazing.

Love these tippet rings! Tying a dropper directly to the tippet ring works great! I was slaying trout this past weekend. Got two trout on one line for the first time! Loads of fun!
The part about uncoiling a leader is one of the most useful tips I ever heard.

I laughed so hard at this. Outstanding delivery. I do wish I had started using tippet rings earlier.

Doesn't that affect your roll while casting?
Putting the tippet ring on at home is a great tip! Love your videos!
Ha ha this video is perfect, made my day. Thanks for the helpful advice! Very informative, and will add a whole new exciting element to my fishing and casting
The doll was a great model to show scale. Great idea and she really rocked it.
attach while still on the swivel- now that's a pro tip!
wow, i thought the same thing... I've lost so many of those darn things
@@ModernWoodShop 😂😂😂😂😂
No telling how many I have dropped into rivers until this tip.
Ain't that the truth. Would of just try to tie straight on in the air and lose it 🤣🤣

This was a legitimately educational video that had me dying. Great comedic delivery of some issues I can relate to.
questo video è veramente chiaro e preciso! real good job!
Great video. I’ve never heard of these but it’s similar to tying a swivel on a leader for bass fishing or panfish with a spinning rod.
Switched over to tippet rings and haven't regretted it since. They reduce the frustration level, calms the cussing, and get's me back to fishing faster. What's not to like about that?
Great job~ fresh, lively and upbeat, seriously appreciate the know how.

The Barbie dolls made this amusing 😂
thank you I've been using the tippet ring since i watched this video a few months ago and they work great

great video, great tip, thanks. Just getting back into fly fishing and the new stuff out there, as well as knot tips, making it easier!
Man.. what a great fly fishing gear video.. thanks for this
This was both funny and instructive! Thanks for this!
Creative video! I didn't know Morgan Fairchild was still working in the business.
I had no idea that these existed! I tried doing something like this with little o-rings off of crank baits, but those were to big. I will really have to get some of these.

mind blown. need to cop some asap!
you can also just tie a loop knot and connect your tippet to the loop, plus it will float higher..
Good information; hysterical presentation!
Like it, gonna try it! If you don't mind me asking, would you use the same leader (9' - 12') for lakes and reservoirs on streams and rivers please?
VERY GOOD VIDEO. WELL PRESENTED - CONGRATS.
love that hand model lol
Match made in heaven I’d say so....... by the way, props to the little lady, what a visual helper🤣🤙
Brilliant! It's about time some puts her to work! Clinch knot work on this?
Good job; keep them coming and thank you

Thanks, now I can afford to use those braided leaders without going bankrupt!
What brand of tippet rings do you use?
Never heard of these! I want to try them soon!

Good video. Barbie was a nice touch. :)
Great video!
Great video with barbie :-)
I love using tippet rings. I really hate the fact that they are forbidden by Fips Mouche regulations.
Hi Mike what is Fips Mouche ?
Paul Kasputis it is the organization that controles the rules for flyfishing competition. You can google it to see the rules..
Thanks.

@@tightlinevideo great to hear. Thanks for the quick reply!
Beautiful fish. Where can I get that tippet disposal thingie?
Preferably, would you recommend that I use this set-up for dry fly fishing or nymphing?
Hilariously informative tutorial.
You should just do a general fishing tips and tricks video along with more fishing action. I love all your work though. Keep it up.
is this a new line dispenser you used and can you show how you made this many thanks john uk
What knot would you suggest? I love the davy knot. Would that work?
I use a grinner knot to do mine.
Dude, the Barbie...Hilarious!!

Could the ring also be a good idea to attach a dropper fly??
yes it can

do those tear us your guides on the rod if the leader comes on to your reel?
love the barbie!
New toy that I wouldn't mind trying
Do you add a second fly from that ring.
i have been told to do this while fishing a still water
Now is the time to rebroadcast this video.
So can u use a tippet ring for dries or only nymphs and streamers

Question why are there dolls and where did you get them
what knot were you tying for the connections?
Uni knot.
thanks for the video.....uber
I originally thought the Barbie was creepy, but, like a new pair of underwear, it has grown on me!
Erotica and fishing, two of my favorite hobbies in one video
Barbie was a nice touch
Huh so tippets float I didn’t know that I’ve just been using micro split rings that fit through my rod eyes without any trouble usually
Great use of dolls.
what size on the ring do you use? 3mm?
yes 3 mm
What knot did you tie
TheSPminnow Sluggo uni-knot
tightlinevideo I normally use improved clinch
I use an Orvis knot myself.
velojayf thanks
@@velojayf Rio would not approve! The Orvis is great though.
I like the barby
This method well I also fish in Egypt

I just attach my tippet with a perfection loop
