Good advice. But what about solo paddlers? 2:00 -- You must be able to self rescue under any conditions that you might paddle in. That means practicing until you can always get back into the boat, regardless of whether there's another kayaker to help. Before you go on the water you need to know how to get back in unassisted. If you can't self rescue, then yes, stay close to shore. But even then beware of an offshore wind and currents that might push you beyond swim range in a short time. Read the Deep Trouble series of kayak books and internalize the lessons. Happy Paddling!

    Thank you very much.
This is as good a presentation as I have seen on anything - clear, articulate, and informative.
You do a great job of highlighting the dangers and prevention - I will be sticking to where I can swim to shore!

Hot tip: you can do a 100% sucessful wet entry roll using a paddle float ( see vids). In the water , put float on paddle, setup paddle parallel to kayak. Hold breath, enter kayak and seat, use paddle to roll up.
Next,... skirt on, pump out using paddle as safety. Last, float off. Ive done it in small surf.
I do.lots of solo trips, mostly in tropical Queensland. I have a Plb in my lifejkt pocket, gps with maps , emergency drybag to rip.off on top of rear...

@@happydogg312 I have only fell out once. And that was beaching where there were high breaking waves, from coming in from a distance I couldn’t tell they were breaking waves. So I came back a few weeks later after watching some RUclips videos, this time I managed to surf my way in. The amount pressure I had to push with with the paddle to keep me from going sideways was crazy. Probably won’t do that again was very close to hitting huge rocks and I don’t wear a helmet

@@happydogg312 It's off the coast of Skye, waves can be huge and can change very quickly. I do need to do more rescue stuff just to be on the safe side.

You should have a bullet proof roll if you venture out to sea. rescues are fine but should not be needed. Rescues in my opinion are still beginner level. Nothing wrong with that level just know your limitations.

@@trickyricky9953 When a steep 7 foot wave hits you NO brace will help you. I have a picture of exactly that hitting me. Right here. www.dc9mm.x10.mx/wave2.jpg A roll is the only thing that will save you. I have a full video of this as I was wearing a helmet cam. I of course rolled up. ruclips.net/video/LSvNuzkTP94/видео.html

My problem will be that I am a great swimmer cuz of boycotting and the trips we took, I have not been in the water for over 15 years. Yeah that's going to be a big deal.
