To be fair, in silent film era they did use white paints or even asbestos/talcum powders on their faces, because it made their faces more distinct and would correct the white balance on film.
So not how they did it then, but there are stage productions that do this now, and it’s SO COOL. I believe there’s a theatre company in Dallas that calls it “living black and white”. Getting to meet the actors and see the makeup up close and personal after a show is just mind boggling.
My late husband was Mexican and he was the sweetest most well tempered person I have ever met. Much like Adrian. I think part of the reason I enjoy watching Adrian is because my husband would have the same look when he was angry with my shenanigans.
Funnily enough, Chaplin was an extreme perfectionist and he once made an actress do a scene over 100+ times (think of the film cost). So I can’t imagine how hard he was on the set of the few talkies he did. 😂 I think there was a reason he tried to keep silent film alive for so long.
This is levels of genius I can’t even describe. Just chef’s kiss on the implications that black and white silent films were done that way for creative reasons. I love it
Fun fact, they would often have a band come play while filming silent movies because the sound of trucks moving and carpenters working on other sets just off camera were a distraction for the actors.
Hilarious idea that they would be recording sound and would have to artificially keep it silent. You are so creative - this is much better content than most of the movies out there.

During the silent era, music was not recorded on the film... Instead it was provided by each individual theater, either by phonograph or as performed live on site by musicians. 🤦🏻♀️
@@themaggattack Not exactly. In the silent film era, there were no sound effects at all because there was no sound track. In many theaters, someone would play a piano or organ live to create tension while the silent film was shown to an audience.
For those of you who actually wonder how the music in silent movies works, it's awesome. There used to be organs at the center of movie theaters. The organist would PLAY THE SOUNDTRACK IN REAL TIME
If only you could just fire the sound guy. But he's way too important!
