      @@GojuRyuKarateCentre I appreciate your video and your style.
      I come from a Mostly, Chinese Martial Arts background. With that being said, I do not understand why your style concentrates on striking with the first two knuckles.
      It SEEMS to Not make sense.
      What seems to make sense is striking with the last three knuckles. The reason being, is there is a lot less chance of jamming your wrist. Keeping the fist in line with the line of the forearm keeps from breaking or spraining your wrist.
      Doing it this way has kept my wrist safe while striking Makiwara boards, boards, Heavy bags and even in those times of combat.
      I noticed that even in The Karate Kid movies they mention this.
      And I do not understand it.
      Don't get me wrong, I have broken my knuckle twice, but that was because I did not stick to the rule of hitting something hard with soft and hitting something soft with a something hard.
      Even Mike Tyson broke his hand in a street brawl. But that is understandable because he trains striking with big gloves and with his hands wrapped.
      I am just interested in Your art and the differences in them and that is why I ask.
      Thank you very much.

      @@whitespacemarines4308 Thank you so much for taking the time to watch, and to write this thoughtful, curious comment.
      We focus on the front two knuckles (seiken, which means literally 'correct punch') because when aligned correctly, the bones of the forearm line up behind those knuckles, adding some serious stopping power while also creating a structure to protect the hands. A lot of people break their hands because their fists aren't tight enough on impact, which causes distortion of the hand and wrist, and therefore unhappy broken bones. I wince when I see someone punching with a bent wrist or a thumb sticking out. If that's one thing we can teach, is how to punch properly, that's a lot of work done!
      However, in our later kata (the ones with the closest ties to our kung fu heritage), there are strikes using all other parts of the hand, including the 3 smaller knuckles, like in Seiyunchin. It tends to follow the rule of the best weapon for the target. A smaller area requires a smaller weapon, so there are times when we use the side of the hand, or the pinky knuckle, to get in somewhere. Our style has origins in white crane kung fu and monk fist boxing, and this becomes clearer in our much higher katas.
      Thank you so much for sharing, and we are delighted to have friends from other martial arts stop by. Sharing our commonalities, and our differences, makes the martial arts world far more interesting :)
      Best.
      Zoe

      @@GojuRyuKarateCentre Thank you for your response. I very much appreciate it and admire your style of Karate.
      I have a lifetime interest in the Martial Arts, and am always interesting in learning more.
      I see so much of the fighting arts spiraling off into hybrid arts that it is nice to see someone carry on longtime traditions. I feel that keeping in tradition is a Very important thing.
      It is NOT that cross-training is wrong,...IMHO; but that it seems like everyone is looking for the next, new, best thing. And they look to the UFC to gauge what is effective in a street fight and what is not.
      I believe this to be a wrong way of thinking. Mostly because the people in the UFC are Ultra High Level athletes and are fighting for a living and not fighting on the streets.
      I believe that ALL fighting styles and systems have value. And we can learn from them all.
      Please keep up what you are doing. It IS Very important!
      Peace to you.

    being a black belt means that the person has mastered the basics of the form that he practices
    for beginners, they should at least watch this video once every day and practice the moves and techniques he is showing
    also you should write that Japanese words he is using and try to remember them
    the video is amazing and teaches the basics in detail

      You are 100% right - the black belt means a mastery of basics, not of all karate, and beginners should strive for that, so that they can have a strong foundation for their later karate.

Each style has its own utility though and if I'm going to focus on pure power strikes it would be a boxing, karate muay thai hybrid (out of the styles I know). • @GojuRyuKarateCentre
      @GojuRyuKarateCentre  4 года назад +3

      Great question!
      We believe there is grappling and submission holds/locks implied in Goju Ryu kata. It is absolutely a great idea to add it to your skill set, and you can do it while staying true to the spirit of karate. Unfortunately, bunkai gets neglected, so all the depth and knowledge contained within kata gets lost as well.
      We have built it in to our dojo kumite, and we teach 'safe' grappling to kids so that they have a good foundation to build on.

      Ideally, it is best if you can find a good dojo to help you learn, as a qualified instructor can help you diagnose and solve problems in your stance, posture, technique etc. Try a few free classes at a dojo near you until you find a good one :)

    Osu Sensei! Would you please clarify - as I see from execution of the blocks, it looks like in all of them you are using round movements, the hands move by semi-circle or at least on some curve (for example gedan-barai). In other styles as I see and practice like for example kyokushin the movement is more straight, and in gedan barai the fist, for example, basically follows the line of the arm.
    Is it (circular movement) something specific to Goju Ryu only and if yes - is there any explanation why this way of doing the technique is more preferrable than another? As I understand it's because it is more oriented on grabbing the opponent's arm after the block (so you follow the opponent's arm with yours after the block) rather than just pushing it away, but I'm not sure if this assumption is correct.
    Thank you!

    How long does it take to get proficiency with these techniques? How many hours practice?

    • @GojuRyuKarateCentre
      @GojuRyuKarateCentre  Год назад

      Hello!
      An excellent question, though hard to give a precise value, because everyone has different abilities and goals. The grading system does help with some guidance - black belt suggests proficiency, and that can take 5-8 years, depending on which school you are in.
      I hope you can find a good dojo and a good instructor to help you find guidance on your progress!

      This playlist has the kata in the order in which you would learn them up to brown belt: ruclips.net/video/0RAYao3dLJA/видео.html
      Geki Sai Dai Ichi is our white and yellow belt kata, and it contains the basics we would expect white and yellow belts to know. Hope this helps!

      It is indeed! The author of the original books trained in Goju Ryu, though the karate in the movies (and in Cobra Kai) doesn't look as much like Goju Ryu as it should. It is a challenging art that takes time to learn, which isn't easy for actors to do with limited time.
      We hope you enjoy our videos, and we hope to be part of your karate journey and success 🥋

    I'm training in Muay Thai and I really hate it... Is Goju Ryu karate effective in a street fight?

    • @GojuRyuKarateCentre
      @GojuRyuKarateCentre  2 года назад

      Hi Chris!
      Muay Thai is a brutally effective art when taught well - it is more the teacher than the style which makes it effective. We try to teach effective Goju Ryu to the best of our abilities, by including groundwork, sparring, locks and throws in our teaching. Maybe these videos we've done will help answer your question:
      ruclips.net/video/8lfhcJ1WaYE/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/wB2R54ZNRxQ/видео.html
      And our many, many bunkai videos on the applications of kata:

    Sensei but in the face block u raise your hands and if someone tried to punch you in the face it would go straight through your block.

    • @GojuRyuKarateCentre
      @GojuRyuKarateCentre  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for contributing,
      "Basics" or fundemental techniques are composites, in a real fight, nobody uses the complete block.
      In kihon drills like sandangi or sanbon kumite, we work on a prearranged drill for muscle and movement development. Its how we make the block better.
      If you block a different way, and it works, and its what your sensei asks, then do as your sensei says.
      Thanks again
      Train hard

      Always a pleasure!
      You would use the part of the block you need depending on the angle and kind of attack. We did a video on all the composite parts of a face block - please check it out here: ruclips.net/video/nc1aa905Z00/видео.html

    This stuff does not work in the street. Let's be real 100% real. Goju does not have boxing type offence or defence it's supposed to be close quarter fighting but these type of blocks and punching ask anyone you want on the street this is not in any way useful. Why don't you show Goju Ryu combinations hand combos kick combos doesn't goju have any fighting strategies
