- Welcome to #Drama! A Greek surprise city! In today's episode we will discover a green and welcoming corner of #Greece. Virgin forests, lakes and rivers, vineyards, cities with centuries of history and tradition, impressive #Christmas villages.
Drama is an important city in Eastern #Macedonia. Built at the foot of Mount #Falakro or mountain of flowers as the locals call it - in a wooded area. It lies 146 km from #Thessaloniki and 223 km from #Plovdiv, #Bulgaria. It has a population of 46,000 inhabitants and is an ideal #destination for #excursions any time of year!
One of the most popular #international words of the #Greek #language is the word drama, deriving from the verb dro which means to #act. It means the poetic genre of the ancient Greek #literature and as a result it came to describe the misery, the passions of a person or a group of people.
In northern Greece, and specifically in the land of Macedonia, lies a beautiful #city which is not at all #dramatic.

Its name comes from the word #Hydrama, due to the abundance of water gushing in the area. Characteristic is the park of the springs of Agia #Varvara. An idyllic location in the city center with ponds and #waterfalls, taverns and recreation areas. #Ducks and geese swim in the cool waters, while fog is often formed, making the #landscape even more #special. The impressive building of the old #Spierer warehouses, which is now a #hotel, is mirrored in the waters of the lake and the snapshot is breathtaking.
Every year is set up in the city a beautiful Christmas #village, unique in all of Greece! It is the Dream City of Drama or Oniroupoli, colorful and festive, attracting young and adults!
At the #Archaeological #Museum of Drama you can admire findings from the #Roman and #Byzantine past of the area, while it is worth visiting the castle and the city walls as well as the #temples of Hagia Sophia of the 10th century and Pammegisti Taxiarches of the 14th century.
The "Drama Short #Film #Festival" is a leading event of its kind, with international recognition.
Drama is a city that knows how to party and have fun. Dozens of #taverns and #restaurants for all tastes and budgets serve traditional meats, cold cuts and dairy, accompanied by the always excellent, award-winning Drama #wine, and also grappa from local producers.
The #Prefecture of Drama is famous for the quality wines it produces. In the Wineries of the area you will enjoy a special tour of the secrets of #Dionysus, an ancient god that was once honored by the inhabitants and protected the vine, while blessing the process of wine production!
In the riverside #Nestos Forest, #Paranesti and the hinterland of the Paranestian land you will find images of an authentic and untouched Greece. The wider area is characterized by natural beauty, with great and rare vegetation, rich flora and fauna, streams with old arched bridges and beautiful waterfalls, while scattered ruins and churches testify to the human presence in previous decades. In the place where ancient tribes of Thrace lived and the Dionysian cult was widespread, you can do #rafting and countless nature-loving and #sports #activities!
When the landscape and the surrounding nature manage to captivate us, we set ourselves free again! In the pristine forests of Drama there is so much energy that your batteries will be fully charged. And you will breathe free, without stress, sorrows and thoughts.

You may have heard a lot about the drama in the news regarding the Greek economy in the recent years. But have you ever heard about Drama as a travel destination? It’s certainly the type of city in northern Greece that remains unaffected by massive tourism, yet it offers plenty of opportunities for visitors to enjoy a relaxing and different weekend. A stroll down Drama’s Old Town is going to intrigue you with its genuine and interesting mix of old and new. If you love the outdoors, you are going to need at least a few more days to explore the many treats of the Rodopi Mountains. Designated as a national park in 2009, it covers almost 70% of the region of Drama, offering many opportunities for hiking - notably through part of the European E6 trail - or just simply enjoying the birch trees and the waterfalls in the many different forests. Also, during the snowy season, the Falakro #Ski #Centre (1720 meters) awaits you to ski, snowboard or sleigh your way down the magnificent, wooded slopes.
All of the natural wonders, as well as its fine wineries, are best explored by car, as they are quite spread around the area.

Πολύ όμορφο. Πολύ Όμορφος Χριστουγεννιάτικος προορισμός η Δράμα και η γύρω περιφέρειά της! Όπως και για όλες τις 4 εποχές (χειμωνιάτικος, ανοιξιάτικος, καλοκαιρινός και φθινοπωρινός όμορφος προορισμός)! Επιπλέον, ας επισημανθεί ότι: Για τους φυσιολάτρες επισκέπτες, που αγαπούν συνήθως και τον Σιδηρόδρομο (και τον συνδυάζουν στις εκδρομές τους με τα φυσιολατρικά τοπία και τις πόλεις), και που θα ήθελαν να έρθουν από πολύ μακριά, από Αθήνα (και νοτίως Αθήνας), Λαμία, Λάρισα, Θεσσαλονίκη, καθώς επίσης και από Θράκη/ Έβρο, θα βοήθαγε πολύ να ασκηθεί πίεση (από τοπικούς και αυτοδιοικητικούς φορείς) ώστε να ξαναξεκινήσουν τα δρομολόγια επιβατικών τραίνων (με τουλάχιστον δύο (2) ζευγη δρομολογίων ανά ημέρα) από Θεσσαλονίκη (με ανταποκρίσεις εκεί και από την Αθήνα) , καθώς και από Αλεξανδούπολη προς: Ξάνθη, Νέστο, Σταυρούπολη, Παρανέστι, Δράμα, Λευκοθέα-Αγγίστα, Αλιστράτη, Σέρρες, Σιδηρόκαστρο, Ροδόπολη, Καστανούσα, Κιλκίς. Δηλαδή σε όλη την όμορφη (αλλά και εξυπηρετική για την συγκοινωνία των οικισμών, κωμοπόλεων, πόλεων και αστικών κέντρων από όπου διέρχεται και τα εξυπηρετεί) σιδηροδρομική γραμμή Θεσσαλονίκης, Νέας Φιλαδέλφειας, Κιλκίς, Καστανούσσας, Βυρώνειας, Κερκίνης, Ροδόπολης, Στρυμώνα, Σιδηροκάστρου, Σερρών, Λευκοθέας/ Αγγίστας, Αλιστράτης, Δράμας, Σταυρούπολης, Παρανεστίου, Θρακικών Τεμπών του Νέστου (στάσεις Λιβερών & Κρωμνικού), Τοξοτών, Ξάνθης, Κομοτηνής, Αλεξανδρούπολης και Αλεξανδρούπολης, Σουφλίου, Διδυμοτείχου, Νέας Ορεστιάδας, Δικαίων, Ορμενίου (και εκεί παρομοίως με ζεύγη δρομολογίων επιβατικών τραίνων). Επίσης, η Δράμα διαθέτει ένα πολύ όμορφο Σιδηροδρομικό Μουσείο (το οποίο φτιάχθηκε αποκλέιστικά με πολύχρονη, εργασία και οικονομική εισφορά εθελοντών, και περιέχει όμορφες παλιές ατμομηχανές και βαγόνια και σιδηροδρομικά οχήματα, που αξίζουν να τα επισκεφθεί κανείς) μεσα στις εγκαταστάσεις του Σιδηροδρομικού Σταθμού της, καθώς και έναν πολύ όμορφο (από πλευράς αρχιτεκτονικής, σιδηροδρομικής και βιομηχανικής κληρονομιάς) και λειτουργικό μεγάλο Σιδηροδρομικό Σταθμό, ο οποίος έρχεται από το ιστορικό παρελθόν (με μεγάλη προσφορά συγκοινωνιακού, εθνικού και εμπορευματικού έργου) και παραμένει Σύγχρονος και λειτουργικός μέχρι σήμερα.
