Daisuke, this October project is such an act of generosity. Three days in and I already have a completely different outlook on the month. Thank you so much! So excited to see what other favorites we share.

Daisuike, I just have to say.... you spoke SO well with this. I know you don't deem yourself a scholar or academic vis-a-vie the film world but your comments on this, I just can't imagine anything better. And as I was pondering this, I said to myself that, this is no different than any of Daisuke's other comments regarding any film he talks about. Your comments on Lair of the White Worm-just nothing could be more precise and on point. And as I say, this is with ALL of your movie comments. Daisuke, you are so....SO valuable to the film community. I, and all of us who watch your channel are so grateful for you imput. And I love that you are highlighting one horror film per day for the month of October. It's really a lot of fun! I learned how to correctly pronounce the word Jigoku with the accent on the first syllable. Previously, I was always pronouncing the word Ji GO ku. I have the dvd of that and could not begin to appreciate it on first viewing but with your detailed analysis, I can not revisit this piece of cinema with new ammunition. Thank you Daisuke for your thoughs on White Worm and for ALL of your never ending contribution to cinema appreciation.

Hell yes! Oh man I love Ken Russell. You should do a series on his films. He is such an interesting director and deserves to be talked about more.

I mentioned him on another channel a while back and the person didn't know Ken at all. It's remarkable to me how far his rep had fallen. But he really was remarkable as a film maker - maybe not always in a good way mind you but certainly somebody whose work people should be aware of.

Thank you Philip. In fact, doing something on his films has been on my mind since a year or so ago. I would love to try it one day if possible.

I have seen bits and pieces of this film on television from time to time via the Sci-Fi Channel! This is certainly a film that falls under the radar a bit when it comes to horror films. It also should be mentioned that this picture was loosely based off of the final novel from Bram Stoker of the same name published in 1911 which in turn was inspired by the urban legend of the Lambton Worm from the UK.
I knew that Hugh Grant was in the film but as you mentioned Peter Capaldi is in there as well. And as far as Ken Russell's work I have seen a little bit with films like Tommy and Altered States (the later being the best film I've seen from him). I would like to see this film though the challenge is getting around to finding a copy or watching it online if a streaming service has it. There are plenty of copies for sale on Ebay (with varying cover art I might add!) but alas no Blu-Ray release yet. Still it's out there!

He i just watched this earlier this year! Hadn't seen it since I was maybe 15.
Man I loved it, without expecting to! Donohoe's physical acting especially is so damn brilliant.
    SPOILER:
I only wish Hugh Grant's character's actions with his team at the end in the cave had more directly to do with victory.

I remember when Lair of the White Worm first came out it was such a different type of horror film, a real tongue and cheek type of horror film its probably not everyone's taste though especially in the states where we are used to more gore type films but its good to see a film that makes u think once in a while.

Saw it for first time a few weeks ago on one of my Roku apps, free, forget which app. All I can say is that is was very fun to watch, well made, erotic, scary, vile, all the points you brought out spot on, thanks.

That is a great coincidence and I am so happy to hear your reaction to the film.

I don't know. As a lover of TV, film, interviews and autobiography of a certain age I grew up with a certain view of Ken Russell as an increasingly idiosyncratic and indeed eccentric genius who veered, often within the same film, between inspired inspiration and sheer silliness and or excess. But he was always interesting - even if I was occasionally appalled by his vision. So where the heck do I place this? Well to be honest somewhere on the daft as a brush campy end of the spectrum But perhaps I am wrong - maybe I should give it more credit for both serious intent and it's sense of sheer fun. It is perhaps a sign of how difficult and puzzling I find Russell and why I continue to be fascinated by the undoubtedly charismatic and difficult old geezer. I suspect I will now have to revisit this work in the light of your comments - and some of any resulting enlightenment or frustration I will of course be placing at your door. Well done!

Agreed this is a great film..it can nake you laugh and then scream at the same time..this was based on Bram Stoker's last novel..and what a great job Ken Russell did with it...superb movie!

Another one to add to the list! I've been meaning to see a number of Ken Russell movies ever since I was absolutely blown away by The Devils but unfortunately many of them are difficult to get a hold of so I've been putting it off. Luckily this one is available on Amazon so that isn't too bad. Keep up the good work! I can't wait to see what other films you highlight this month
