We were lucky he spent 15 full minutes with us since we upgraded an old Indian army armoured recovery vehicle completely with Indian systems.
I am a retired Col from the Army and have barely managed to buy a three bedroom apartment in Army Welfare Housing society in Panchkula where few Generals are also staying. We live a simple but dignified life. Carrying no baggage of huge property or wealth. Just enjoying our sunset years with nominal government pension.

Also being the son of an Ex Serviceman ....i can relate to what you are trying to convey sir ...Gen.Rawat sir is truly an inspiration to people both within and outside the forces and no less than a legacy......and i can definitely say that there are many such stories across lengths of the forces.....i have my personal experience with my father.....of how they make it look very very normal by their undeterred honesty, humbleness and above all patriotism....a small example of it being ....My father excluded me from the ex-servicemen medical coverage of dependants on the day of my employment.....and later after few years even for my sister who is younger to me he had disenrolled her from the medical coverage provided to the ex-servicemen no sooner she had secured an employment.....and he takes pride in it ...he just said that now you are no more a dependent.....many such things in many aspects in the lives of every soldier are common in India......and like you say it quite often ....ONCE A SOLDIER....ALWAYS A SOLDIER...these things might appear as trivial or silly things for the rest of the world....but not to him...or them i am sure.....that is the level of a patriot who is committed to his country....

Well said, the Indian army is the most humble, honest and decorated army, my Dad was in the 1971 war (Assam Regt) to liberate Bangladesh from West pakistan.
Many of my villagers served in the Indian army and after retirement they live a very simple life and the best part is that they stand united and help each other and the most amazing part is that they have a football team (Fauji team) it consists of all the Indian army, no matter which Regiment or unit you served young or old, because every year there is a sport event in our Village and half of the fund is sponsor by the army. We are lucky to have such a great army.

Audit ke time darr lga rehta tha , kahin koi galti na nikal jaye , Quarter master ki saans sukhi rehti thi .DIG Saab ka 10,000 monthly GPF cut hota tha , DG Headquarters me ( CGO complex ) DIG tk officers ko Car ke liye wait bhi krna parta tha .Jai hind .

My relative Lieutenant General Kaiwalya Trivikram Parnaik, who was commanding northern command and is now governor of Arunachal pradesh lives in simple 2 bedroom flat. He also joined a corporate after his retirement and working till his appointment as the Governer.
