i love how he fights between accepting the end of their love and being haunted by the memoriess!!!! all the verses are about the narrator reminiscing these moments that are long gone and he just can’t seem to put behind him, and in the chorus he acknowledges how the person simply didn’t understand him any more than sensationalist headlines do - but he still finishes the song with a really quiet “every now and then, the first thing i do in the morning is wish you were here” ☹️!
It is just me or at 2:41, when he sings "Sometimes I wake up and I wish you were beside me", it gives me Something great vibes? It reminds me so much of the ending of Something great, where he sings "You're all I want, so much it's hurting". Both of this situations seem so similar to me, both are endings that kinda sound the same and give the same overwhelming feeling of sadness.
When I first heard the lyric "you used to read me like a headline" l thought it's like they were closer like the person depicted here easily understand what's going on in his mind. But now I realised it's about misunderstanding in any relationships that tear people apart . Like headlines are often misleading or just baits. Without understanding context we jump into conclusion. Its like you were not able to realise the truth that's why we are not together
I can imagine the whole scenario for this song. The vintage aesthetic of how this would be shot in a movie, the 80's clothes, hiding their forbidden love. There are flashbacks of happy moments, stupid jokes, silly pranks and i can see them in a speeding car, with the sunroof open as they feel the owner of the world and the coconut trees pass by them, i can imagine them stopping the car and they are sitting on the beach, looking out at the vastness of the sea and the beautiful sunset with the sky taken by shades of red and orange and they know that this is their last moment together.
