I was hoping that Zuko's scar would look more disabling than it is. I liked how in the cartoon they make it clear that Zuko's ability to blink and cry has been permanently compromised due to the burn his father gave him. This looks like the makeup department didn't get the memo that this is a SCAR and not just some red highlighter.

The actress who plays Azula, has the best acting role. Being able to switch from unassuming and almost innocent looking to manic and bloodthirsty. Had chills imagining her final battle with Zuko and Katara. CAN'T WAIT!!!
Yup. Ozai and Azula arent supposed to have any meaningful screen time until season 2. Since the live-action seasons are much shorter than the original, its safe to assume a lot of stuff will be cut to cater to their extra screen time.
@Jenema2 The live-action season has something like 20 extra minutes (a whole episode's worth) as opposed to the cartoon, and episodes are double-length meaning time won't be eaten up by credits/'previously on' sequences. I'm sure they'll manage.
While I agree about Ozai being shown too early, we have to take into account that we already know what the actor looks like, so a reveal wouldn't have had as much impact anyways. I think as long as they don't overshow him or introduce him too casually (like the movie we dont speak of) it can still work.
Well this show isn't gonna be a one to one adaptation to the cartoon. Each episode is an hour instead of 30 minutes. Also instead of episodic storytelling it's mostly gonna be storyline driven
Actually I remember when he played a character somewhere (the Tv show Lost? I think I’m not sure) when I was kid and at the time I was also watching the cartoon, and I literally thought that’s Ozai in real life. Glad I’m not the only one who thought that. He even sounds fitting to be Ozai if you look up some of his acting roles. He is fluent in Korean and English and acts really well in Korean films and American films. This guy is expensive to have as part of the cast actually. Finding another Asian actor that can embody the character acting wise, is fluent in English, is experienced in acting in the US AND still resemble the character would be difficult to find if this guy did not exist.
One thing I would love to see is a dynamic between Zuko and Lu Ten. Seeing that on screen would be awesome, and it would also make his death carry more weight.
Lu Ten's death doesn't need to carry weight. The audience doesn't need to get choked up over Lu Ten's death, we need to get choked up over Iroh's reaction to it. We care about Iroh and that's all that really needs to be there. Trying to flesh out every detail is how you get the Cowboy Bebop clusterfuck.
The thing with Azula and Ozai in the show-and this is just simple animation logic-is that they have sharper looking faces then someone with rounded features like Iroh which is why Azula's actor looks so innocent. Though if she can act mean then I hope her innocent look will add a new layer of scary to the character. Like don't let the cute face deceive you because she could and will burn your head off

As someone who teaches middle schoolers, you’d be surprised at how mean a baby faced teen can be ! I think Azula’s casting is even better because of how cute she is !

she does look kind of sweet and innocent and i don’t think her outfit helps either. it looks like just some other armor but in the cartoon, azulas outfits give powerful leader vibe and they seem kinda sharp if that makes sense. not literally but sharp is the word that comes to mind😭
One thing that I miss it's the makeup. In the show Azula wears makeup and it makes her look older and more intimidating in a way (just google "Azula no makeup" you'll get what I mean) I always interpreted that as a deliberate choice of hers, because she is literally a 14 year old leading armies, she doesn't want people to see her as a teenager, she wants people to look at her in awe and respect. Perhaps if they used a more dark makeup palette she would look "meaner". Also Azula in the show has shaper features while this actress have a more round face, but I truly don't think that it's so important. As long as she can deliver a good and convincing performance.
Finally. They actually chose fitting actors and aren’t changing up the names to “sound more realistic”. 100% more promising than the live action Last Airbender movie that came out years ago
My best guess for where the character image is pulled from Ozai probably the war meeting that Zuko interrupted. Would make sense that he's looking over a map for battle strategies. Iroh hard to say could be any scene but my best guess is that he's talking with Zuko right before his Agni Kai with Zhao. Azula pretty much impossible since she only had 2 scenes in Season 1 and she didn't even speak. Pretty obvious they plan to expand on her character so she'll be in more scenes in S1 still don't think she'll be a major character til S2. Zhao I agree it's pretty obvious during the Blue Spirit episode probably telling his guards not to kill the Avatar while the Blue Spirit has swords to Aangs throat. Zuko hard to tell my best guess is that it's either when he's fighting Aang in his room on the ship or when he's alone on the ship right before the pirate assassination attempt.
@@Shazoo1997 they haven't filmed Season 2. It wouldn't make any sense for them to do that yet. My best guess is the 2 background characters are Mai and Ty Lee. Hard to say since background is so blurry but the profile fits.
I have to disagree on the scar. It was probably a lot worse when Ozai actually did it. Over time it healed but not completely as it's a scar. Not to mention that it looks pretty accurate to the animation. We see the very dark part of the scar on just a tiny bit of his face, but then the lighter burn marks on the surrounding tissue. Personally, I think this is you misinterpreting the scar in the cartoon to be something bigger and more animated than it would look when depicted realistically
It's a lot easier to see the different coloring of the scar on an animated Zuko than it is on a real face where it isn't just one color that has a solid line where it changes color.
I mostly wish it was bigger, extending from his ear and bellow the cheek bone to over his ear with more of a disfigurement of his face. Its an important feature of his identity he has to overcome and represents everything he needs to win back early on in the show (regain his honour and all that jazz), this one just looks like a black eye.

I actually like that Azula doesn't look evil right away, she's a 14 year old girl who's really manipulative. People don't see her being a maniac at first glance, she acts calm mostly and only loses it a couple of times. And for the eye color, I usually would mind that character have their respective eye color in adaptations but here you can clearly tell who's from the fire nation and Ozai's really pulling off that look, I don't really mind if they don't give them golden contacts (but it'd be definitely bonus points if they do, or even have them change eye color with light or when they firebend from a darker to lighter shade)
Azula is supposed to exude authority. She's always been like that. She is like her father, athletic and well-built. Wants to show everyone that she's perfect, and expects others to submit to her. Her sharp features add to that aura that is always around her. She is not supposed to be subtly manipulative. She is the crown princess, ofcourse she has gotten away with being manipulative overtly. It is the people around her who had to be subtly manipulative, so as not to incur her wrath. A lot of the fans are supposed to forget that she's just a child coz she puts on this air of superiority and maturity. But when u see her take her makeup off and when you see glimpses of her vulnerability, u realize that she is just a child groomed to be this way.

Zhao was a commander back then, the cape must be given only when he's promoted to admiral, he'll be leading the navy to attack the Water Tribe, so that's maybe to add status.
I would have liked to see Azula's face be more angular, it would have just made more sense for her character. Having a rounder and softer face subconsciously makes her look less malicious. I'm sure the casting director took that into account seeing that they are professionals, so there is probably a very good reason why they went with her instead of someone else that physically fits Azula's character more. But again, it's going to be her performance that is really going to make or break it for the audience. EDIT: A lot of people are saying that the actress is 14 but she's really 21 years old
Was thinking the same thing. Azusa has a much more angular face with sharp features... this actress is a little too soft if you get whatci mean. And I see the same thing with Zuko.
I really feel the lack of contacts is a miss. It’s one of the core things that signifies the nations in a way that makes you understand *this is a different world* and it’s those unique little touches that build up the world of atla.
For me personally contacts always makes the actors look more 'other-worldly' and harder to empathise with. I've never seen it done in a subtle way, if it was something they could correct with CGI I'd be all for it.
Using contacts can cause a lot of issues if someone has allergies (daniel radcliffe had this problem filming harry potter, meaning the character's signature green eyes had to be scrapped for the movies); they can also create issues with visibility for actors with vision impairments (see david tennant and his issues filming Good Omens, where the contacts were the correct prescription but so opaque they were difficult to see through). While it can be done, insisting that it *should* be done just because it'd look nicer is unrealistic. Maybe they'll use contacts, maybe not, but ultimately it matters less than telling the story and suiting the needs of the actors. For me, fantasy eye colors can work in a cartoon but kind of tend to take me out of immersion in live-action.

As portrayed in the series. So no, the gaang blending in fire nation territory would not be stupid with the actors wearing contacts.

It’s always been crazy to me that some ATLA fans act like Azula wasn’t only 14. Granted, that’s not as young Aang or Toph. However, she would still only be in middle school. I like that the actress looks young and has softer features. When Azula wasn’t being…well Azula 😂. She looked soft and kind. That can be scene in the episode “The Beach”. Azula always appeared tender at first, then she talked hahaha. It’s also shown in her interactions with Ty Lee and Mai.

I agree that zuko's scar could be a bit better and his ear could be burned but at the same time, burn scars fade a bit overtime when they heal, but yes the ear could be burned. Also, acting with characters like these, especially Azula, is more important because the performance needs to be not too over the top with characters that could easily be over the top not casted correctly. I understand being upset initially but they probably casted her for a reason, especially since she doesn't look exactly like the original (the cartoon character). Also, her looking younger fits her being 14 and will make the contrast even more effective if she pulls it off with her acting. If you think she looks like she could play ty lee then I suggest you look up who is actually playing Ty lee because she fits even more.
Everyone looks so amazing!! I was ready to be so judgy after the disaster that was the Avatar TLA movie, but everyone looks so GOOD!!!!!! The detail is incredible, the outfits are just 😍beautiful and spot on to me, the character justice is wonderful, and I truly appreciate the attention to detail in everything. I love Iroh's beard that way, I mean the man looks like someone I want to hug. He's got a teddy bear vibe to him like the cartoon Iroh. Perfect💗 Zuko's head is shaved and looks just as awkward as the cartoon. I love it! So well done. Azula looks great, idk what y'all are talking about. Considering how high the bar is for her character, I'd say the actor did a phenomenal job pulling her off. Don't hate on her when she's doing her best for us to give us an incredible and scary character. Give the woman some love, guys!! And Firelord Ozai!!!! OMG I really like that actor because every character he's ever played is done to perfection!! I'm looking forward to seeing him go off like Ozai does. I know he'll do amazing and respect the character for us fans. I can't wait to see this show and watch the world we all love come to life!! I'm happy that this fandom is finally getting the live action show we deserved and that this show deserved YEARS ago. Give the actors some love everyone!!! They deserve it so much for everything they've been doing for us.
On the topic of somewhat anticipated live action Netflix shows, One Piece was honestly pretty good, so after that and these sneak peaks I'm even more excited for the ATLA live action.
I'm glad that people are confident in this because of the OPLA, but it kinda bums me out how that is the reason people opened their minds, as someone who has been following the show for such a long time and knows what good work they've been doing bts/secrets. What I mean is that almost the entire time, people have complained about past LA projects (Netflix and in general) saying "netflix messed this up" "netflix that" when netflix, in almost every case, has been the distributor, not the production company. I know most people don't know there's a difference and not saying I know how it all works either, but I feel like all the apprehension towards netflix SPECIFCALLY was not a completely valid reason to be as extremely skeptical as some people were/are about this. Not saying that people cant or shouldn't be but it is just disappointing that people took it being from Netflix as something against it when it's all about what production company/companies are behind it and their past projects. I'm not sure if i explained this well enough. Essentially people are just looking at the Netflix name when anyone could have put this show out if the details were in order and they got ownership. I personally have been confident for a while because I've done my own research and found some really lesser known things.
I knew what One Piece was as an anime but never saw it. So, it could be me being bias that I think they made the live action really good. Cause I haven’t seen the anime yet. It does give me hope that ATLA live action could deliver the same kind of quality which can win over a lot of casual viewers. I feel like as long as they’re true to the source material and adding some small twist to it without completely changing the story, it would be another success. I just hope that if this trend keeps going, there will be more anime adaptations and I hope they don’t lose the quality and passion of making it and not all just about making money like most movie companies are nowadays and forget about the quality of it
Since I don't see anyone else mentioning it I'll point out that zuko has his ponytail in that picture. It's dark and blend into the background pretty well BUT if you notice the pattern the background makes you can see that the ponytail breaks that consistency and also you can see the light just barely reflect of the little ring that holds it in place

I’m still so terrified. Not every great cartoon needs a live action remake. There are so many things you can’t get away with in a cartoon visually that just don’t transfer to live action well at all, I don’t care how “well” it’s done. In all honesty I would’ve been much happier making a new cartoon bringing back all of the original cast to pretty much continue kinda close to where they left off. I would love to see the world building between ATLA and Korra, show me how they got to where they were while still having that vibe of best pals just trying to fix and rebuild the world
Great news, Avatar Studios IS coming out with a movie set a handful of years after the end of the show, and there are graphic novels that fill the gaps between the end of the show and that movie, setting up some plot points for Legend of Korra. A lot of them are available free online if you know where to look. So there's still plenty of other stuff to delve into if you're dead-set on not watching the live action.

I wish they picked someone with sharper features for Azula, I feel like a lot of characters they chose were for their race and not their look, like sokka looks perfect but everyone else could have used a little swap for people that fit the features a little better but I hope the show proves me wrong
I couldn't figure out what was off with Zuko's scar, but then I realized its his eyebrow, he doesn't have an eyebrow in the original which makes the scar stand out, it could also be bigger too. Just a nitpick though, what's important is what the scar means, not the look of it.

Just from looking at the first looks of Iroh, Ozai, Azula, Zhao and Zuko for the live action adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” it looks like we’re in for a real treat.

I think that the scar on Zuko is bigger than it seemed in that picture. If you look at that side of his face you can see a lot more scar tissue. It's just obscured by the lighting
I remember thinking that Daniel Dae Kim wouldn't or couldn't pull of a Firelord Ozai since he's played such great n positive roles in the past. But now that I see the pic of him as the infamous Fire Lord. I can now see him pulling off the role. I wish him the best of luck.

With Zuko’s scar they can always enhance it when the show airs. I think this is why they release photos of the cast so early for feedback. Also, Zuko looks like a kid and I am not sure if they can apply the makeup necessary to make it standout, so they could fix it with special effects or whatever.

They all look great but Im nervous about Zuko's scar. You can clearly see there is something wrong with his eye. You just can't tell what. The scar doesn't seem as prominent or as obvious as in the cartoon. But everyone else, especially Daniel Dae Kim and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Iroh respectively look perfect!
You're wrong. The animation is exaggerated because it's difficult to show the extreme levels of detail that live action can. If you look at his main scar, it's actually pretty small. The larger parts are the rough textured skin which they have added if you look closely. They did a very faithful job at recreating what the kind of scar would look like in real life.

Hot take - Zuko's scar is perfect, let me explain... if you were to check out how burnt victims' skin looks after they have healed, you'd see skin distortion and possible darkening of the skin; something like what Zuko has. Even though the photo shown here 4:58 distorts the majority of the scar's image because of a glare. In turn, making half of the scar that occupies the cup of his eye look darker and the other major half meld to the color of his skin and light source. AKA Bad angle bro trust.
i agree. Personally I just spent 30 seconds looking up pictures of people with 3rd degree burns that healed on their face and it looks pretty similar to the Zuko actor's scar. Animation always has the ability to "exaggerate" certain features of things that would not look realistic in live action. Also if Ozai literally went full strength on a fire punch, Zuko would most likely be dead, (at least blind in that eye), not just a scar. So looking like Ozai just wanted to disrespect Zuko with a "lighter to the face" is actually realistic

Zuko's scar is bigger than what it looks - you can see "scaring" in the side of his head by the eye as well. Also, Zuko is not completely bald here, he obviously has hair on the top - you can see it.
Honestly, that Azula doesn't look mean is pretty accurate to me. If you'd see a picture of Azula just chilling, you wouldn't say necessarily that she's as mean as she is, until she starts acting like it.

Looking at other photos of the actress, she actually does have sharper features, but given she’s 21 playing a 14 year old, a bit of that roundness actually helps young her down. Especially given there’s not an insignificant chance that this shot of Azula is from a flashback and this is younger, I doubt this is her getting assigned her mission from Ozai
The speaker in this video missed one thing about Zuko. He does have a ponytail like he did in the original series. It's just a little more obscured unless you look a lot more closely. Although he did make a good point about the guy's scar.
I think the actors are spot on. The next breaking point for this show to be really good comes with the way they show the bending, but considering how well the actors are and fit the characters, I think we don't have to worry about it.
I hope they can use CGI or some other technique to make zuko's ear look burned and scarred as well. One thing that really always communicated to me the savagery of his injury was his scar running down the side of his head, and even over his ear. He had like a smaller, melted looking ear on one side of his face. Which really drove home how hot and how brutal the fire was that scarred him.
Algo the ligth on the zuko picture is coming from his left side shining the scar, we have to see another angle, it looks amazing. This whole thing looks amazing.

If you look more closely at the photo with zuko in the ship you can see that he has hair, you can slightly make out what looks like the rings at that base of a ponytail, a slight bit of light is reflecting off the curves of the rings...
Just an addendum. That Admiral Zhao photo is indeed the last episode, check behind him, you can clearly see a "flaming ball" in the back, representing the eclipse of the moon :)

I think as long as they don't overshow him or introduce him too casually (like the movie we dont speak of) it can still work.
Well this show isn't gonna be a one to one adaptation to the cartoon. Each episode is an hour instead of 30 minutes. Also instead of episodic storytelling it's mostly gonna be storyline driven
I think it would've been better if they kept Ozai's actor a secret until the premiere.

Actually I remember when he played a character somewhere (the Tv show Lost? I think I’m not sure) when I was kid and at the time I was also watching the cartoon, and I literally thought that’s Ozai in real life. Glad I’m not the only one who thought that. He even sounds fitting to be Ozai if you look up some of his acting roles. He is fluent in Korean and English and acts really well in Korean films and American films. This guy is expensive to have as part of the cast actually. Finding another Asian actor that can embody the character acting wise, is fluent in English, is experienced in acting in the US AND still resemble the character would be difficult to find if this guy did not exist.

One thing I would love to see is a dynamic between Zuko and Lu Ten. Seeing that on screen would be awesome, and it would also make his death carry more weight.
Lu Ten's death doesn't need to carry weight. The audience doesn't need to get choked up over Lu Ten's death, we need to get choked up over Iroh's reaction to it. We care about Iroh and that's all that really needs to be there. Trying to flesh out every detail is how you get the Cowboy Bebop clusterfuck.

The thing with Azula and Ozai in the show-and this is just simple animation logic-is that they have sharper looking faces then someone with rounded features like Iroh which is why Azula's actor looks so innocent. Though if she can act mean then I hope her innocent look will add a new layer of scary to the character. Like don't let the cute face deceive you because she could and will burn your head off

she does look kind of sweet and innocent and i don’t think her outfit helps either. it looks like just some other armor but in the cartoon, azulas outfits give powerful leader vibe and they seem kinda sharp if that makes sense. not literally but sharp is the word that comes to mind😭
One thing that I miss it's the makeup. In the show Azula wears makeup and it makes her look older and more intimidating in a way (just google "Azula no makeup" you'll get what I mean) I always interpreted that as a deliberate choice of hers, because she is literally a 14 year old leading armies, she doesn't want people to see her as a teenager, she wants people to look at her in awe and respect. Perhaps if they used a more dark makeup palette she would look "meaner". Also Azula in the show has shaper features while this actress have a more round face, but I truly don't think that it's so important. As long as she can deliver a good and convincing performance.
Finally. They actually chose fitting actors and aren’t changing up the names to “sound more realistic”. 100% more promising than the live action Last Airbender movie that came out years ago

Daniel Dae Kim is such an amazing actor, that I believe he will be a great Firelord Ozai.
The Firelord Ozai consume design is one of the best costume designs I’ve ever seen! Hands down. So good.
My best guess for where the character image is pulled from
Ozai probably the war meeting that Zuko interrupted. Would make sense that he's looking over a map for battle strategies.
Iroh hard to say could be any scene but my best guess is that he's talking with Zuko right before his Agni Kai with Zhao.
Azula pretty much impossible since she only had 2 scenes in Season 1 and she didn't even speak. Pretty obvious they plan to expand on her character so she'll be in more scenes in S1 still don't think she'll be a major character til S2.
Zhao I agree it's pretty obvious during the Blue Spirit episode probably telling his guards not to kill the Avatar while the Blue Spirit has swords to Aangs throat.
Zuko hard to tell my best guess is that it's either when he's fighting Aang in his room on the ship or when he's alone on the ship right before the pirate assassination attempt.

I have to disagree on the scar. It was probably a lot worse when Ozai actually did it. Over time it healed but not completely as it's a scar. Not to mention that it looks pretty accurate to the animation. We see the very dark part of the scar on just a tiny bit of his face, but then the lighter burn marks on the surrounding tissue. Personally, I think this is you misinterpreting the scar in the cartoon to be something bigger and more animated than it would look when depicted realistically

It's a lot easier to see the different coloring of the scar on an animated Zuko than it is on a real face where it isn't just one color that has a solid line where it changes color.
I mostly wish it was bigger, extending from his ear and bellow the cheek bone to over his ear with more of a disfigurement of his face. Its an important feature of his identity he has to overcome and represents everything he needs to win back early on in the show (regain his honour and all that jazz), this one just looks like a black eye.

What do you mean that he's misinterpreting the scar in the cartoon, it goes all the way to his ear. The entire scar is a sixth of his entire face, thats a significantly large scar.
I actually like that Azula doesn't look evil right away, she's a 14 year old girl who's really manipulative. People don't see her being a maniac at first glance, she acts calm mostly and only loses it a couple of times. And for the eye color, I usually would mind that character have their respective eye color in adaptations but here you can clearly tell who's from the fire nation and Ozai's really pulling off that look, I don't really mind if they don't give them golden contacts (but it'd be definitely bonus points if they do, or even have them change eye color with light or when they firebend from a darker to lighter shade)
Azula is supposed to exude authority. She's always been like that. She is like her father, athletic and well-built. Wants to show everyone that she's perfect, and expects others to submit to her. Her sharp features add to that aura that is always around her. She is not supposed to be subtly manipulative. She is the crown princess, ofcourse she has gotten away with being manipulative overtly. It is the people around her who had to be subtly manipulative, so as not to incur her wrath.
A lot of the fans are supposed to forget that she's just a child coz she puts on this air of superiority and maturity. But when u see her take her makeup off and when you see glimpses of her vulnerability, u realize that she is just a child groomed to be this way.
Her mom literally called her a monster as a kid. She even accepted and agrees with it later on.

I would have liked to see Azula's face be more angular, it would have just made more sense for her character. Having a rounder and softer face subconsciously makes her look less malicious. I'm sure the casting director took that into account seeing that they are professionals, so there is probably a very good reason why they went with her instead of someone else that physically fits Azula's character more. But again, it's going to be her performance that is really going to make or break it for the audience.

I really feel the lack of contacts is a miss. It’s one of the core things that signifies the nations in a way that makes you understand *this is a different world* and it’s those unique little touches that build up the world of atla.

logically, that would make pretending or blending with other nation kind of stupid.
For me personally contacts always makes the actors look more 'other-worldly' and harder to empathise with. I've never seen it done in a subtle way, if it was something they could correct with CGI I'd be all for it.
Using contacts can cause a lot of issues if someone has allergies (daniel radcliffe had this problem filming harry potter, meaning the character's signature green eyes had to be scrapped for the movies); they can also create issues with visibility for actors with vision impairments (see david tennant and his issues filming Good Omens, where the contacts were the correct prescription but so opaque they were difficult to see through). While it can be done, insisting that it *should* be done just because it'd look nicer is unrealistic. Maybe they'll use contacts, maybe not, but ultimately it matters less than telling the story and suiting the needs of the actors. For me, fantasy eye colors can work in a cartoon but kind of tend to take me out of immersion in live-action.

As portrayed in the series. So no, the gaang blending in fire nation territory would not be stupid with the actors wearing contacts.

It’s always been crazy to me that some ATLA fans act like Azula wasn’t only 14. Granted, that’s not as young Aang or Toph. However, she would still only be in middle school. I like that the actress looks young and has softer features. When Azula wasn’t being…well Azula 😂. She looked soft and kind. That can be scene in the episode “The Beach”. Azula always appeared tender at first, then she talked hahaha. It’s also shown in her interactions with Ty Lee and Mai.

I agree that zuko's scar could be a bit better and his ear could be burned but at the same time, burn scars fade a bit overtime when they heal, but yes the ear could be burned. Also, acting with characters like these, especially Azula, is more important because the performance needs to be not too over the top with characters that could easily be over the top not casted correctly. I understand being upset initially but they probably casted her for a reason, especially since she doesn't look exactly like the original (the cartoon character). Also, her looking younger fits her being 14 and will make the contrast even more effective if she pulls it off with her acting. If you think she looks like she could play ty lee then I suggest you look up who is actually playing Ty lee because she fits even more.

Everyone looks so amazing!! I was ready to be so judgy after the disaster that was the Avatar TLA movie, but everyone looks so GOOD!!!!!! The detail is incredible, the outfits are just 😍beautiful and spot on to me, the character justice is wonderful, and I truly appreciate the attention to detail in everything.
I love Iroh's beard that way, I mean the man looks like someone I want to hug. He's got a teddy bear vibe to him like the cartoon Iroh. Perfect💗

On the topic of somewhat anticipated live action Netflix shows, One Piece was honestly pretty good, so after that and these sneak peaks I'm even more excited for the ATLA live action.
I'm glad that people are confident in this because of the OPLA, but it kinda bums me out how that is the reason people opened their minds, as someone who has been following the show for such a long time and knows what good work they've been doing bts/secrets. What I mean is that almost the entire time, people have complained about past LA projects (Netflix and in general) saying "netflix messed this up" "netflix that" when netflix, in almost every case, has been the distributor, not the production company. I know most people don't know there's a difference and not saying I know how it all works either, but I feel like all the apprehension towards netflix SPECIFCALLY was not a completely valid reason to be as extremely skeptical as some people were/are about this. Not saying that people cant or shouldn't be but it is just disappointing that people took it being from Netflix as something against it when it's all about what production company/companies are behind it and their past projects. I'm not sure if i explained this well enough. Essentially people are just looking at the Netflix name when anyone could have put this show out if the details were in order and they got ownership. I personally have been confident for a while because I've done my own research and found some really lesser known things.
I knew what One Piece was as an anime but never saw it. So, it could be me being bias that I think they made the live action really good. Cause I haven’t seen the anime yet.
It does give me hope that ATLA live action could deliver the same kind of quality which can win over a lot of casual viewers. I feel like as long as they’re true to the source material and adding some small twist to it without completely changing the story, it would be another success.
I just hope that if this trend keeps going, there will be more anime adaptations and I hope they don’t lose the quality and passion of making it and not all just about making money like most movie companies are nowadays and forget about the quality of it

Since I don't see anyone else mentioning it I'll point out that zuko has his ponytail in that picture. It's dark and blend into the background pretty well BUT if you notice the pattern the background makes you can see that the ponytail breaks that consistency and also you can see the light just barely reflect of the little ring that holds it in place

I’m still so terrified. Not every great cartoon needs a live action remake. There are so many things you can’t get away with in a cartoon visually that just don’t transfer to live action well at all, I don’t care how “well” it’s done. In all honesty I would’ve been much happier making a new cartoon bringing back all of the original cast to pretty much continue kinda close to where they left off. I would love to see the world building between ATLA and Korra, show me how they got to where they were while still having that vibe of best pals just trying to fix and rebuild the world
Great news, Avatar Studios IS coming out with a movie set a handful of years after the end of the show, and there are graphic novels that fill the gaps between the end of the show and that movie, setting up some plot points for Legend of Korra. A lot of them are available free online if you know where to look. So there's still plenty of other stuff to delve into if you're dead-set on not watching the live action.

I couldn't figure out what was off with Zuko's scar, but then I realized its his eyebrow, he doesn't have an eyebrow in the original which makes the scar stand out, it could also be bigger too. Just a nitpick though, what's important is what the scar means, not the look of it.
I was thinking the same thing. If he didn't want to shave it, I completely understand, but there are ways of concealing it under makeup. Maybe they'll remove it in post production ;)

I remember thinking that Daniel Dae Kim wouldn't or couldn't pull of a Firelord Ozai since he's played such great n positive roles in the past. But now that I see the pic of him as the infamous Fire Lord. I can now see him pulling off the role. I wish him the best of luck.

With Zuko’s scar they can always enhance it when the show airs. I think this is why they release photos of the cast so early for feedback. Also, Zuko looks like a kid and I am not sure if they can apply the makeup necessary to make it standout, so they could fix it with special effects or whatever.

They all look great but Im nervous about Zuko's scar. You can clearly see there is something wrong with his eye. You just can't tell what. The scar doesn't seem as prominent or as obvious as in the cartoon. But everyone else, especially Daniel Dae Kim and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Iroh respectively look perfect!
You're wrong. The animation is exaggerated because it's difficult to show the extreme levels of detail that live action can. If you look at his main scar, it's actually pretty small. The larger parts are the rough textured skin which they have added if you look closely. They did a very faithful job at recreating what the kind of scar would look like in real life.

Hot take - Zuko's scar is perfect, let me explain... if you were to check out how burnt victims' skin looks after they have healed, you'd see skin distortion and possible darkening of the skin; something like what Zuko has. Even though the photo shown here 4:58 distorts the majority of the scar's image because of a glare. In turn, making half of the scar that occupies the cup of his eye look darker and the other major half meld to the color of his skin and light source. AKA Bad angle bro trust.
The scar and the outer scar area look really good in color/texture here- should have just made the whole scar a bit bigger, in my opinion
i agree. Personally I just spent 30 seconds looking up pictures of people with 3rd degree burns that healed on their face and it looks pretty similar to the Zuko actor's scar. Animation always has the ability to "exaggerate" certain features of things that would not look realistic in live action.
Also if Ozai literally went full strength on a fire punch, Zuko would most likely be dead, (at least blind in that eye), not just a scar. So looking like Ozai just wanted to disrespect Zuko with a "lighter to the face" is actually realistic

I have to confess that growing up Ozai was kinda my guilty pleasure of ATLA and I‘m very happy with the cast! 😄🙊
I think the actors are spot on. The next breaking point for this show to be really good comes with the way they show the bending, but considering how well the actors are and fit the characters, I think we don't have to worry about it.
I hope they can use CGI or some other technique to make zuko's ear look burned and scarred as well. One thing that really always communicated to me the savagery of his injury was his scar running down the side of his head, and even over his ear.
He had like a smaller, melted looking ear on one side of his face. Which really drove home how hot and how brutal the fire was that scarred him.
With all this going on I think I'll have to go watch the show again to get into the vibe once more before the live action release

i honestly have no issue with how azula looks, she's technically 14 so I don't need her to look menacing I want her to BE and ACT menacing, if the actress is good at giving us that feeling then idc how she looks tbh

If you look more closely at the photo with zuko in the ship you can see that he has hair, you can slightly make out what looks like the rings at that base of a ponytail, a slight bit of light is reflecting off the curves of the rings...

Just an addendum. That Admiral Zhao photo is indeed the last episode, check behind him, you can clearly see a "flaming ball" in the back, representing the eclipse of the moon :)
