At the beginning of the interview Spalding Gray makes a very telling remark: to make fun of himself before anyone else does. A coping mechanism to hide insecurity, something many comedians use. A brilliant writer and a deeply depressed man who tragically chose the path his mother did.

I think it was a different circumstance. His brain wasn't functioning well after a car wreck. He jumped off the Staten Island Ferry. He did seem to reincarnate as a bird, though.
