You got a great deal on the wrecker. Those 90’s fuel injected 460’s weren’t very powerful but they were very reliable. Good thing is they can be made into torque monsters fairly easily. The fact that everything still works after sitting outside for 7 years is pretty amazing.
Must not have too much faith in the towing ability of that shiny new Duramax since you brought the Trekker along to tow the new tow truck back to the shop. 😇 Love the new Purchase!

Guys...and The Boss of course...thanks for letting us know that the old 1920's Off-Road Tow Truck project Rory was going to do for you is still in the works...we can't wait to see it, see it work and see what it can do.
I've restored 9 of those F250/F350 trucks over the last 20 years. I highly recommend a Saginaw power steering pump conversion, no more whine, way more reliable. The third brake light wasn't a thing until '94. On the '92 and '93, it's only a cargo light. In '94 is when Ford added the 3rd brake light/cargo light combo. I'd also do a ZF-5 speed manual transmission swap. It's literally bolt in. Rory's truck is a ZF-5 speed. Far far more reliable than that E4OD automatic. That's what makes Fords so fun, is their interchangeability!
What interchangabilty? Back in the day you had to figure out if it had a Cleveland, Windsor, or an M. One wouldn't bolt to the others transmission, components wouldn't interchange. At least with Chevrolet a small block would bolt to anything else. That's why most people that do mods always goes with Chevrolet, easier to work on, actual TRUE interchangabilty. When i was going to automotive school, we always had a motto. If a manufacturer could find a way to screw something up, it would be Ford.
@timothygeiger8271 Tim, this isn't back then. The 9th generation F-Series trucks. 1992-1997 (F-250/F-350/F-Superduty) were all very interchangeable. I wouldn't post a comment like that, wasting my time if it wasn't. The 9th gens are extremely plug-and-play. I've worked on them for 20+ years now.
Absolutely!! 100% agree that this rig need the Saginaw power steering conversion. I have done this twice myself and the difference is incredible, and cheap!
You will not go wrong with your new to you OBS Ford. I have a 1993 with a 300 line six with 220,000 miles still my daily work truck. Look forward to you building it out.
Interesting acquisition. You and Rory can have a ford wrecker pull off. That winch will pull a mountain over. Speed can be had with a few parts changes. High speed isn't all it's cracked up to be. It's a single line, but it'll get some work done. Get the wiring right so you're not chasing gremlins all the time. It'll be fun to see where this goes.
Very cool purchase, Robby! I think your shop is a great new home for that wrecker! So sorry the former operator has passed on, but I'm sure his sister is happy to see it used as intended and not as a home for bees and/or wasps.

Usually when a wrecker starts winching the RPM raises to like 3000 RPM. At that RPM the winch will be fast. So that feature does not seem to work.. I assume a lever on the back can controll the RPM of the engine. A hydraulic winch is way way stronger then electric ones. And should be as fast.
@@Stratos53100 Yes. It either has a mechanical lever connection to the crane levers that is in operable or another way it can raise the RPM of the engine so it can power the hydraulics. When that is done the crane should be fast and very very powerfull. Stronger than electric powered by a battery.
I like Hillbilly's suggestion - put in a 12 valve Cummins and that will make that little Ford wrecker a real gem! And installing 5 winches from Harbor Tools will make it very useful for off road and sketchy recoveries! That Ford wrecker was a really good buy!
You got a steal on that OBS Ford wrecker. Cant wait to see you do some upgrades and put it to work. I would keep the hydraulic winch and just add some additional electric winches.
Congrats on the addition to your fleet, Robby! You should consider reaching out to Casey Ladell…. He’s got a similar rig and might be able to give you some ideas.
Y'all definitely need an off-road wrecker.., just in case Matt does the Off-Road Wrecker Games again - lol. Nah, you definitely need a dedicated off-road recovery vehicle. This will be a great build, can't wait to see it in action.
That old Ford will run for a hundred years if you take care of it. I do highly recommend that you pay attention to the transmission. I had a 95 F150 that was a fantastic truck, the only issues I ever had was the transmission. I come from Ford country, I grew up just 20 miles away from the Ford Truck plant in Norfolk Virginia back before it closed.
Hydraulic winches speed is dependent on where the PTO is installed on the Transmission. If it’s installed in a constant speed licit will be slow. Since that truck is setup on a hydraulic pump run off the engine itself the speed will vary depending on the engine RPM. I’ve installed tons of PTO’s and winches of all sizes up to 120 ton on trucks with my dads company and I’ve seen and ran hydraulic winches that are much faster than electric. The only winches I’ve ever ran that are faster are chain driven that are connected via a splitter/transfer case as you can use the transmission gears and engine speed to spin them faster.
Robbie, proud that you gave Hillbilly a little victory! He had the same smile (you know what I mean) he had when working on his Harley. It's a smile I don't notice with other projects.
11:18 I use those electrical connectors for my winch on a cradle on the front of my '03 Rubicon. It has a 2nd battery for the winch in the trunk and I used #2 welding cable for the plugs from the battery. I have plugs front and rear so I can use the winch either front or back. I also made up a jumper cable like this one to use the winch battery for starting vehicles so that there is no danger of wiping out the $700 PCM. Warn 9000# winch and cradle is 110#. The welding cable insulation is very durable and the fine strands of wire makes it flexible. All electrical connections/lugs are both crimped and soldered. I use the marine battery switch to tie the batteries together so that I can jump start the Jeep easily. I can also carry the winch, battery, and chain to where I cannot get the Jeep to assist someone.
Excited to see that you are finally getting a piece of equipment that is made for the jobs you are doing. There are suggestions in the comments on how to make the hydraulic winch faster. Start there and add electric winches on the back and front. Fix the things that need fixing to make it really dependable and put it to work.
Great video guy's, love the new wrecker. First thing I would do is make sure it runs dependably, put a lift on it ,and really good tires and you'll be able to go most anywhere.
I’m excited about this one! I’m Ford through and through but if you do a engine swap a 12 valve would definitely be the way to go especially since you live so close to *Industrial Injection.* 😬 ❤
Eric with BSF has a hydraulic winch on his wrecker. Awhile back he showed up for a recovery, but there was already a wrecker with an electric winch hooked up. The e winch did not have the power to bring the stuck rig over the hill. It could be that it was an older or cheap e winch, I'm not sure, but Eric wound up having to hook up his hydraulic winch to pull the guy out. It's just something to think about.
I think I would build the roll cage in the laymo before i put the roof back on. It would be easier to weld the top. You could just clamp the roof in place when you need to check for clearance.
$2800 for a 1-ton 4X4 truck is a screaming deal. I sold a 1985 Chevy K30 single cab rust free Las Vegas dually with a 454/T400/NP205/Dana 60 front/Dana 70 rear a few years ago that ran and drove, but was still wore out from one end to the other for $7500.

Those old Ford push rod engines were just better. If you're going to rebuild everything, this is a great place to start. It has the potential to better than anything you could buy new. Especially with these folks doing it.
I have used the solder sticks in the past and they are great, but i can 100% tell you that they do not like gas. After putting an in tank fuel pump in a jeep i did an ls swap on, i started having isues and had to drop the tank, the rubber was super soft and the solder crumbled.

90s ford 460 7.5 L engine by the look at the top of that. Top notch engine, all the power you could want, but better have a good card since it loves to drink gas :p Favorite memories of my childhood were made in a 91 F350 with that same engine, as a tow truck. Great truck, almost 300k miles before the output shaft in the transmission let go. Still have the truck, hoping I can make it go again someday.
Casey LaDelle will be proud of you 😊 C & C Equipment has some nice older Ford's ,but they also have some Hetts and one set up with a JeerDan wrecker unit ,imagine Robby and Hillbilly in one of them
👍 Thx for info on solder wires & gas tanks! Also the “McDonalds is always out of ice cream” I’ve experienced in UT, OR, VA, MD, & now Kentucky where I live. Quit your complaining, Robby! Here in San Jose, California... $5.90 a gal. at the station down the street from me. And my 24 gal. tank is below 1/4, dammit! I've been watching in hope the price would go down a little... but it only seems to go up. It was around $5.60 a week ago.
Finally a nice Ford on your channel.
Doesn't Hillbilly get a Harley whenever he Sings Little Teapot, of course if Robby puts a LS in Wrecker Hillbilly would have his Motor for Broncstar
Just one Harley! That was the deal!!
Don't give him any ideas!
Broncstar need an ls swap too 😂
Great addition.... Hope we still get to see the treker and skid steer...
I can't wait for the Body and Paint video on this Gem!
Oh and a name for it lol Tow-Laytonator
Robby Layton and friends are joining the Wrecker Club! This will be a nice project! 😃
Did Robby do acting school in a past life? He's got better camera presence and timing than many real actors. Fun video as usual.
Thanks Robbie. SOLDER STICKS it is. Well done fella. Regards from down under mate.
Last 15 secs told perfectly.. keep it up you guys
Nice project ya bought there! "Madagascar" that was funny!
This truck was affectionately named Charlie
It lived its life in larkspur Colorado
And Castle Rock
There's a lot of off-camber roads that it worked best on !
That was around 2000
Truck worked pretty good !
See you at John Wayne Cancer foundation
Ridgeway Colorado September 23rd
the obs gassers that era are extremely reliable and very easy to work on, great trucks
Great addition to your fleet.
Those old Ford push rod engines were just better. If you're going to rebuild everything, this is a great place to start. It has the potential to better than anything you could buy new. Especially with these folks doing it.
Lol. "mad at cas car" 😂Love Adley! As always, thank you for sharing!
You the man Hillbilly!! Trecker looks mint with the new top you put on 👌👌
I have used the solder sticks in the past and they are great, but i can 100% tell you that they do not like gas. After putting an in tank fuel pump in a jeep i did an ls swap on, i started having isues and had to drop the tank, the rubber was super soft and the solder crumbled.
"What we have behind us is a diamond ne the rough" and there stands Hillbilly behind you. I know that is not what you meant but it made me smile.
Love the topper on Hillbilly's trekker. Looks badass.
Really like your wrecker. About time.😊
ending was best with u and wife talking about projects lol
Congratulations I guess. Can't wait to see more updates an projects and many more videos soon my friends. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friends. Fab On. Weld On. Keep recovering. Keep Making. God bless.
Im super excited that yous got a wrecker because now you can be in the Wrecker Games this year. Yes it is going to be Awesome. Im a Chevy Guy also but a Wrecker is a Wrecker as long as you can Tow Vehicles with it im Stoked.
Casey LaDelle will be proud of you 😊
C & C Equipment has some nice older Ford's ,but they also have some Hetts and one set up with a JeerDan wrecker unit ,imagine Robby and Hillbilly in one of them
👍 Thx for info on solder wires & gas tanks! Also the “McDonalds is always out of ice cream” I’ve experienced in UT, OR, VA, MD, & now Kentucky where I live. I saw somewhere on y-tube many locations do this on purpose because to save overhead $. Electricity to run the machine & labor to clean and maintain it. (since they use powder, there is no refrigeration of ice cream involved).
I used to live in Castle Rock CO. Love that place.
Great Ending!!!! If you have plenty of projects, you'll always have something to do. 👍🏻 Can't wait to watch all the winches going on.
The owners were so nice! And Demri looks 21 and be nice to her. Hillbilly is always awesome too. Robby doesn’t look much older then 21 himself. Nice ford truck.
I love the topper on the Treker! Excellent idea!
That "blue oval vs bowtie" banter is just hilarious! 😁😁😁
That’s an awesome truck. I agree that truck would look great in blue. Can’t beat an old Ford
