This is very helpful! I need to repaint a 1/16 Tamiya Full Option Tiger I, that I stripped the old paint off of over 11 years ago. The tank was originally painted by the previous owner 15 years ago. After stripping the paint using Super Clean Degreaser, then storing it away, many years later I’m getting back into modeling again.

Definitely the more traditional camo approach VS the pop art F13 of our favorite Uncle- but I did appreciate all his color research and his explanations made perfect sense. I can't speak from an accuracy perspective, but the process of late war, poorly applied zimmerit over a grey tank at worst makes for a pretty sweet, unique "what if" concept. Your chipping fluid micro chips look amazing, nicely done, in scale as you said, and in logical places. Really cool to see you paint the whole thing as it would have looked at the factory and then camo it all up for chipping with in scale, 1/35 man sized airbrush strokes. Again- makes perfect sense to me and really helps build the effects early on 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 looking forward to Friday! Stay safe

Hamilkar Barkas At what stage do you apply the gloss varnish please? I am starting with weathering and so any tips will be appreciated.
I have stepped back from using glossy varnishes a while ago, at best i use it only in the spots where i want to apply a decal, not over the entire model.

@@theenigmaticgamer first off I'm not that experienced in weathering, but I would say to apply your paint job, add decals, then do a coat of satin or gloss varnish. Then weather, then put some matte varnish
Das werks just brought out an ex Dragon tiger with the Zimmerit so hopefully we get that soon! Still not seen the brukenlager m46 yet I've been building that Bordor model's luchs in-between shifts at work just now, it's a nightmare of a kit tracks done all backwards and there link n length so there the wrong way if you followed instructions that's just one thing there's a few on the fix list to the tracks and the backs of the sprockets not lining up till you go to fit tracks and they sit offski lol between that and working at the hospital just now my heads bursting! I think we're gonna get really over run again very soon with covid yet again!

Thank you :) It wouldn't have been visible through if I had picked that colour...so I had to pick something a little more pale so it would stand out. With oils and stuff it's toned down more anyways.

This cool camoflauge vs night shifts "art peice"
Uncle Nightshift says the red oxide was sprayed over the top of the zim. You indicate that there was no primer on the zim. I had always assumed (and painted) that the primer was applied over the zim. On the Tank Encylopedia page, they say the red oxide was applied to all bare metal areas and then the zim over the top of the primer. Looks like I gotta go repaint all those models! 😳🤪🤪🤪

Yes, red oxide was applied before zimmerit. It's a metal primer so I'm not even sure it would adhere well to zimmerit.

Just a question: I think the chipping on the second paint layer (red brown colour) is hard to chip; or maybe harder compared to the base yellow colour. Haven’t you tried to spray the chipping fluid also between the two colour layers? What do you think?
Micro set is used before the decal is set down, then micro sol after. When it comes to decals on tanks, micro sol will do the trick, however if you go to aircraft models the small stencil decals will start to fall off, at least they did for me. The micro set improves adhesion to the model surface. The gloss coat really helps the large decals on aircraft models too. Mr color gloss coats are dry in the same ammount of time as their paints and are really hard wearing
I use plenty of small stencils on modern armour and they don't fall off. Besides, micro sol is solvent. It should melt down the decal film into the surface. You also definitely do not need gloss for larger decals....just a smooth surface which you can get through smooth paint application and sanding. Decal size is irrelevant. Surface finish is all that matters.

Microsol is hot on some decals. Bandai especially. Microset before Microsol after. "Solvent" is in the name.
Love your vids and ive dug this one of yours up to copy on a Panther. I have a Badger airbrush and I used that MIG primer @22 psi, worst experience with a primer after Vallejos surface primer. Maybe mine was a bad batch or something but I have basically the same airbrush as you and used same product like you. About a few sprays and I would have to stop to clean the needle. About 3/4 way through the entire airbrush clogged and had to be stripped down in cleaning solution.. after that I switched to good ol trusty Tamiya. I give up on primers except cans I suppose....
You're using Mig AMMO "One Shot" primer? They also make a standard Mig primer which is garbage.
Now, this One Shot primer is rebranded Badger Stynylrez primer. I know Badger had to change the formula during COVID due to material shortages. It's possible you have one of these new mixes, under the Mig AMMO brand. I have not tried the new mix but people are not impressed. Apparently Badger is now back to their original mix.
Sorry I can't give you a definite answer here, but my experience with this primer (original formula) is very good so I suspect you have the bad COVID-era mixture.

German tanks were finished in one of five colors Eikenbein (ivory white), Primer red, Olivegrun, Dunklegelb (in two shades one before August 44 the other after), and early war Feldgrau.
Not exactly.
Pre-war you have the Buntfarbenanstrich three-colour camouflage scheme, consisting of RAL N.17 Erdgelb, RAL N.18 Braun, and RAL N.28 Grün. This looks a lot like late-war three colour camouflage.
From 1937 to June 1940, tanks were painted a base of RAL N.46 Grau with 1/3rd of the vehicle covered by RAL N.45 Dunkelbraun. Note that this includes and battles of France and Poland. It's tricky to see this camouflage in photos since brown and grey appear the same in black and white photos, but there are tons of original colour photos from this period too.
From June 1940 to February 9th 1943, RAL7021 Dunkelgrau was the standard base colour for armored vehicles.
In 1941 the first tropentarn (tropical) camouflage pattern was introduced for vehicles serving in North Africa and Greece. It is a base of RAL8000 Gelbraun with camouflage of RAL7008 Graugrün.
In 1942 the second tropentarn pattern was introduced which is a base of RAL8020 Braun with RAL7027 Grau. By this time these tropical camouflage schemes were also approved to use in Russia. You can see vehicles in the winter 1942-43 battle of Kharkov painted in tropical camouflage operating in the snow, which is very unique.
Now in early February 1943, RAL7028 Dunkelgelb was the new standard base colour. Units were supplied with RAL8017 Rotbraun and RAL6003 Olivgrün to apply their own camouflage patterns over the yellow base.
In August 1944, the order was changed so that vehicles were painted with Olivgrün and Rotbraun camouflage over the base yellow at the factory. This was done so that the vehicles would be camouflaged for rail transport. This order was maintained until war's end, though in early 1945 some factories started using Olivgrün as the base over which was applied the yellow and red-brown.

Cool video Evan, those in scale chipping effect do the right job. I have one question: how long after applaying chipping fluid you start to remove the next paint coats? How long I can wait until I start chipping process?
Hmm, I usually wait no more than 10 minutes before I chip. But this time I had to apply the brown camouflage as well after the yellow, so it was probably more like an hour. It still chipped pretty easily though. Just don't wait super long for the paint to set...chip pretty much ASAP after it's dry to the touch.
The Tiger came out looking fantastic! Have you tried that crazy 5-part unit mask on a paint mule just to see if you can pull it off?

New to the game of using a sprayer for modeling. Looking to paint several tigers and panthers. Wondering what I need to purchase in the way of a gun air compressor ?? Needle spray tips ?? Great video, looking forward to the weathering. Re Alliance Modelworks masks, like you say most of their items are out of stock on the official AM website and have been for some time. However, their stencils can be found on Ali Express. I presume AM used a Chinese manufacturer to make their their sets, as the stencils on Ali Express come in original AM packaging. I ordered a few of them from the Ali Express seller (based in China) several months ago and was impressed by the quality.

Great paint job! One question for you and others: how is chipping solution superior to dabbing with a sponge?
I find it is much faster as you're just spraying an extra coat of paint (15 minutes) and the chipping is super fast. No worries about thinning your chipping colour properly or applying it with enough wiped off the sponge...you just use a damp brush and the chips naturally form when youre doing HS chipping. The sponge chipping takes much longer in my experience as you have to be conscious and careful about so many more factors. But still, sponge chipping itself is so much faster than painting each chip with a tiny paintbrush.

I generally have used hairspray because in the past I found it produced finer chips. However I seem to be getting pretty fine stuff with chipping fluid now. Still I prefer not having to clean my airbrush when I just spray on the hairspray from a can.

You could spray on hairspray from a can instead of airbrushing on chipping fluid (yes it works the same), but your brush painting you'll have to keep your top paint layers thin for the chipping to work well. But it might be possible.

I know this is an old video but I’m just now seeing it. Every time I use a chipping fluid, it doesn’t spray evenly with my airbrush. It always comes out unevenly and then it clogs my airbrush is it because I’m spraying it on to low of air pressure?
You could have used One-shot primer in Red Oxide colour?

They are attached using some very fine brass wire. You'll be able to see that more clearly once I do the detail painting in an upcoming video :)

Anyhow, that's a great looking Tiger so far, sure it'll only get better. You don't do chipping effects on the wheels? Would have thought they would have suffered most from stones (etc) flying up and chipping the paint there.

Thank you! I actually did do some chipping on the wheels in some areas, but I didn't film that part, sorry. You'll be able to see it clearly in 2 weeks when I put up the detail painting video on this Tiger, since I paint the steel edges of the wheels there.
Also, the chipping will mostly be hidden by the mud and dust I apply to the wheels eventually. That's also why I never apply the pinwash to the wheels either...it's pointless since it gets hidden by mud and dust passes.

Knew a guy who served from 1939 to 1945 in german tanks and he said "the road wheels on the tigers and panthers were your best friend until you changed them and thats why we would drink so heavily aftwrwards"
fantastic skill,but can I ask why is the reddish brown camo colour sprayed on,when in the field this was painted by the soldiers by brush
Because German camouflage patterns were sprayed on at repair facilities when the units received the tanks from the factory. Brush applied camouflage is not as common as people think on German tanks. Also, there are tons of photos of the unit I am modelling and their camouflage was clearly sprayed on.

I have a question about your airbrush. What size of needle are you using in it to paint the brown stripes and what air preasure do you use.

What tiger 1 model model is that????
im currently building a tiger 1 i wanted to do a whitewash effect but i don't know what camouflage to paint under it are there any rules as to what camo usually was on the tank before the tank would be sploshed in white paint?
It would depend on the unit and time period. A Tiger 1 would most likely have a base colour of yellow, and then green and/or brown camouflage applied over that.
Do you prefer the chip effect fluid or the hairspray?
Honestly hairspray works better, but I didn't have any at the time due to the covid lockdown. So I used chipping fluid in this video.

I don't wait at all. The faster you start chipping, the easier and more in-scale the chips are. I basically just go clean my airbrush and come back and start chipping. 10 minutes maybe.

I noticed with Tamiya paints that no matter how much you thin them once they dry they sort of have a dusty feel to them... do you have the same issue I noticed that you sanded the back of the tool bin
If that happens you're spraying at too high of a pressure and the paint is drying before is hits the surface. I don't have that issue at the pressures I spray at; the finish is matte but still smooth. I just did the sanding to get an even more smooth surface for the decal since gloss varnishes are a waste of time and money.
I am currently building a Panzer IV in a "panzer grey" colour scheme. I am about to paint it. Should I glue on the tools and paint over them, and then leave them painted? Or should I paint the tools separately in different colours? In this video, the tools on your tank are painted over. Thank you for your help.
The video I will be uploading Friday covers tool painting. I paint them on the tank, but you can paint them off the model and glue them after.

Do you find that AK's chipping fluid really blocks up your airbrush? I've tried using it a few times but it always comes out in huge droplets and leaves a really rough surface even after washing it off, and it always gunks up my airbrush afterwards.
No, I have not found that out. It's water soluble so it also it should be very easy to clean.
@@Panzermeister36 Oh fluff, maybe it's the tamiya thinners and airbrush cleaners I've been using to clean it up then. I need to experiment on scrap bits of plastic I guess. Thanks for responding.
So instead of the heavy chipping fluid I could just use some hairspray?
Yes. I usually use HS as I find it easier to use. I just didn't have any on hand for this video.

Question on PSI. I assume the more the paint is thinned then, the lower PSI used, if so, why is that please?
At high pressure, very thinned paint will dry in the air before hitting the model or it will not spray nicely and run all over the place.

Can you tell me your timeline between spraying the chipping fluid....the painting....then chipping? Basically if I put on the chipping fluid and paint do I have to chip soon after or can I wait a day?
You want to chip it before too long. I usually wait 10 minutes...no more than an hour.

Gotta ask, why do advanced modelers like yourself not use the RBmodel muzzle brakes and instead seem to use the kit plastic muzzle brakes. Thanks
Oh, I would have used the muzzle brake that came with the barrel. However, this "Late" Tiger I am modelling had an "Early" muzzle brake which I did not realize when I bought the metal barrel....I just bought a "Late" barrel and brake set since I figured it was meant for all "Late" Tigers.

No, this Tiger is later than the ones if Africa. A good way to tell is that Zimmerit was only introduced after the Germans were defeated in Africa, so no tanks there ever had Zimmerit. This is an Eastern Front unit that fought around Ukraine I believe.

If you don't have a psi gauge on your air source you can buy one at a local hardware store or canadian tire for $20. Attach it with proper connectors to your hose. They may not be included.

Team hairspray all the way. It gives finer chips and has a longer working period.

They would be red primer under the grey. Germans always used red primer except for 1945 when some heavy armour plates were given a grey phosphate primer instead.

That's actual model primer. Then I painted with red oxide for the hairspray chipping.
It would be ideal to have a model primer that is already the right red colour but there aren't any options where I live.

Why do you always paint the tools as part of the tank?
It makes them look like a part of the tank rather than something that is put on it after it was painted.
I mean sure they were all painted the same color but they wouldnt have been on the tank at the time it was painted
I haven't painted the details yet. I'm going to look at that after I apply a wash. Detail painting will involve the tools, wheels, machine guns, rear light, periscopes, etc.

The speeded-up footage is disconcerting. It would have been if you used a time lapse instead.
Time laspe and sped up footage are the same thing. Time lapse photography involves taking a bunch of spread-out pictures so when played together makes time appear to be going faster.
