One of my favorite things from the old Battlefront 2 game was discovering that Jedi could redirect rocket launcher missiles. I knew they could reflect blaster bolts, but I remember my friend and I playing and my friend was playing as Luke and I was a rocket stormtrooper and I figured since Jedi can’t block explosions a direct hit would blow up in his face and then my glee quickly fading into horror as I saw the missile coming directly back at me. That moment made me realize just how horrifying it would be if you were a regular trooper and someone like Luke or Darth Vader showed up on the battle field and having seemingly fool-proof strategies/tactics just get tossed out the window at unstoppable forces of nature walking at you
That's how it felt at the end of Jedi Fallen order you get stronger throughout the game and start thinking man I'm pretty tough then vader comes through like a raging flood
Y'know, thinking on the whole "why not just turn it off then back on" thing for lightsabers, there's a really obvious answer that they absolutely could've gone for but just... Didn't. Power cycling bs. If they really needed a reason, they could just say "Oh, due to power cycling oddities in the crystalline matrix, rapidly activating and deactivating a lightsaber causes fluctuations in the [technobabble bullshit] which causes the matrix to fracture and the lightsaber to, at best, break, or at worst explode". Then they could even utilize it as a gimmick- a last ditch effort technique against a far stronger opponent, say that it's, like, a 20% chance it works or something and every other time it's going to end in being weaponless or dead. Have some desperate villain go for it and blow himself up. Have a jedi do it mid-order-66 and take out a whole troop of clones in a particularly potent matrix destabilization (and, in the process, they die anyway, but at least they took some out in the process). So many options with that.
I think in cannon the reason Jedi don’t do it is because it isn’t honorable and sith don’t do it because it is too cowardly. Honesty I like your idea better
I'll never forget the feeling the first time I jumped into a ship, flew out the hanger seeing shit blow up around me as I heard towards the enemy base, land inside then proceed to blow up their control room. The scale of that kind of combat experience was second to none on consoles back then. I still managed to find some enjoyment out of the modern releases, especially once they gave up trying to shake people down and just pretty much gave everything to players for free, but never had that feeling of "holy shit I can do that?" like I did with the original BF2
I would have loved if they steered into the characterization of Kylo Ren as "Darth Vader fanboy with inferiority complex". There's some interesting commentary that can be made there.
My favourite bit of character for the droids in clone wars will always be when a squad finds a group of older models and has a little exchange like: "These are old models, they don't have individuality like us!" que a chorus of 'Roger rogers' from the rest. It's just kinda cute. I think the game you're thinking of with the lightsaber duels is: SW Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. Brilliant mess of a game! Edit - Edit: I paused to fast to update, please continue. The Age of Empires reskin one did make Gungans the strongest faction.
Cool moments in games were mentioned... One of the coolest moments ever for gaming for me was my first time playing Just Cause 2 In the intro mission you are on top of a car shooting at cars chasing you During the intro mission I used the grappling hook to hook a car to the road which caused it to drive in a semi circle and crash into a gas station that then exploded
I actually spent a good amount of time modding the original Star Wars Battlefront game. A few fun facts. 1) When Pandemic released the dev kit and assets, the Hoth map crashed because they included spawn points for the probe droids. But since there as no programming nor assets, the game would crash when loading the map. Which means, that, at one point, they intended to include probe droids into that map but it didn't make the final cut. This also means that, when you mod the Hoth map, the first thing you needed to do was remove those droids. 2) The Jedi's/Sith's were only invincible because their lightsaber blocked all damage. And I mean ALL damage. If you gave yourself their lightsaber, it will auto block even other lightsabers. This is why the only way, pretty much, to kill any of the heroes is to eject/push them into a hole or have a vehicle land on them. With that said, the block all damage was a flag that could be turned off. It was literally a 0 or 1 value. Integer too so no 0.5. This is also why droidekas in the game would eventually lose to a jedi. 3) All explosions/force had a push value. It determines how far to push something. This also does no damage. As such (my small contribution to the SW: BF modding community) you can set the push value to a negative value and create a suction beam. Another way I ended up killing jedi's/sith's was creating a weapon that does no damage but has a push force of, like, 100, and pushes directly up. 4) Sticks/spears (from ewoks) were the only weapons that the "sticky" flag. But those could be applied to anything ordinance that's not a beam. Thus creating sticky grenades that you can throw on people and run. Or place on top of door ways. 5) The orbital strikes were just normal lasers made slower, larger and pointed down. They also had a homing flag. Which, when modded properly can give you a kamehameha type effect, of, if you do multiple of them, something similar to Piccolo's Hellzone Grenade (魔空包囲弾 Makūhōidan). With that said, I tried to balance the jedi's versus the droidekas. Didn't have much success. I tried to make it so that they had 2 light sabers. One for damage (which, they insta killed.) and one for deflecting shots only. While this might work for a player, the CPU won't know to switch between the two. Oh, also, I once modded the game to give ewoks the force. If nothing else, that was hilarious to watch. They approach the enemy. They start throwing sticks and then force pushing the empire. That game was fun as f*ck. And I'm with them on this one. I tried playing as a Jedi and it gets old fast. I liked being the sniper not just because of the sniping, but also calling in the orbital strikes. And, after that, the pilots to repair and heal people.
For reference to anyone interested in the swordfighter, I believe they are talking about Sellsword Arts. They did disprove the turning off method (as there wouldn't be a way to turn it off without putting yourself in danger, atleast using traditional longsword/katanga techniques) but they did prove that it should be used like a fencing sword/laser pointer.
@@alfsleftnut9224 Yeah, it makes sense why you would think turning it off would work in traditional combat, but it seems to only work if you are an individual with 2 sabers fighting someone with 1. In traditional swordfighting if you could turn off your sword, it would just be removing your only defensive option.
I had a go at that recently, i started messing around with the cheat menu after a couple of hours... you can turn it into the fastest racing game you've ever played, it's incredible how customisable it is under the hood
It was so good. the wipe was cool I loved the retractable knife was also very cool. It's also the reason why Bad Batch makes me so sad because they heavily use commandos but they are the bad guys now. in general, i hate games that make me fight the Clones they are my brothers.
For a different take on battlefront, there's the clone wars mod on the VR shooter Contractors. It's such a fun experience being able to mess around as a clone or a droid in VR and physically interact with these awesome star wars weapons. Getting to experience maps from battlefront in VR is a trip honestly, especially the Umbara map.
One of the best things to experience in DICE’s Battlefront 2 is being in a corridor with 4-7 people as the Heavy class and all unload the Z-6/Sentry ability like Dutch’s team in Predator
I am convinced the gaming community needs splitscreen back. I would have ended friendships over the nonsense people get up to on online games, and some of it would have started fights, which is why it rarely happened. Having a living Human being next to you reminds you that your opponent is also Human, and we all need that.
About a decade ago, i was in a shared house with 3 other people. The first one to get home in the evening would turn on Mario Cart double dash, and wait. As soon as the last person arrived and sat down, they had 20 seconds to choose whoever was left, and then it was go time. I really miss that.
39:04 star wars empire at war is a great RTS game, it's also one of the few RTSes with a growing player count due to great mod support, the game's 10-15 years old by now and still gets updates to make moding easier
for mod recommendations AOTR (awakening of the rebellion) is a fantastic one for a grand strategy galactic civil war story, there are also fantastic mods like Fall of the republic, which take it into the clone wars era
In the first Battlefront, I would always play as either the droideka, heavy trooper, dark trooper, and rebel sharpshooter. The droidekas were OP as hell, but the recon droid's orbital strike was very satisfying. While in Battlefront 2 I would play as Super Battledroid, base Clone Trooper, Dark Trooper again, Wookie, and literally any space marine leading a boarding party.
The practical reason for not switching the sword off/on is because when the blades clash, they are both swinging towards the other's bodies, not their swords, so if you switch yours off, their blade will just continue forward and cut you. This would be different if everyone used . . . I think Makashi is the fencing form (which is specifically used to duel those with lightsabers), since fencing parries would be exploitable with the switch off/on trick.
I know star wars says Jedi and Sith don't turn their lightsabers off for their own personal reasons, but the more logical reason I've seen is that it's just ineffective. If someone swings a laser blade at you that only your own laser blade can block, turning off your blade would just let their blade pass through and hit you, so it would be a more niche option that's only usable in certain scenarios otherwise you're just getting slapped by the other persons laser.
It does feel like with the lightsabers turning on and off thing that it would be a better explanation to say that they take time to turn back on after turning off, because then it would be a fun gambit to use it as a technique where you have to go without a sword for like 5 seconds in a fight, which is a LONG time, if you've ever been in a sword fight.
I remember playing the galactic conquest mode (didn't have friends for multiplayer) and thinking "damn I'm so good at this" Wasn't until years later I figured out that I'd played so often for so long that I'd racked up insane buffs from all the medals I'd got over the years. Basically I was an average player, but whatever soldier or hero I was playing was essentially a living god relative to everyone else.
Tie fighter cd is still my favorite. It did a good job of letting you play as the empire but (at least at the start) making the empire sympathetic. Star Wars for me was always about the space fighting
My personal favorite Star Wars game was probably "Star Wars: Bounty Hunter." The gameplay always had given me a satisfaction that I never knew I needed.
All about the Nintendo consoles and their Rogue Squadron games. Especially the third, Rebel Strike if memory serves, which included a co-op version of the original.
Masters of Teras Kasi was a great drunk night game, my rpg group while i was in uni would play it semi regularly, and the final few fights of the evening always had to be darth vader with lightsaber vs luke without lightsaber. Fun times!
I loved playing as the droids in galactic conquest. They just kind of felt more interesting. I honestly don't need to be a mythic jedi. The droids in general feel like underdogs in Star Wars, and thus interesting.
A call of duty style (single player mode) Star Wars game where you get to pick the era and the faction that you can play and you get a story where you play as a “grunt”
I am probably alone in this but I really liked the Star Wars: the Old Republic MMO. The story was really interesting and the fact that each class had a really good unique story line was awesome in my opinion
to first Battlefront 2 was so good i loved that game. Star wars had several RTS games Force Comander and it was shit and Empire at War from 2006 which is still very popular it even got an update last year.
Kotor was really good. I was bummed that they weren't making anymore kotor games. Then i thought mass effect would scratch that itch. It did not really but i did love those games. I just kind of thought this gameplay is pretty damn good. I wish i could use a lightsaber, though. I liked the driving around in the mako though which a lot of people could have done without. I liked it but it could have been better. I just drove around looking for stuff and getting cool pictures with cool suns and moons in the sky on the side of a sick ass mountain spike.
what is crazy abouut battlefront is that paladins made the same mistake when introducing the cards in the game, and fixed it with cards unbound, so just having the character unlocked all cards, so all players had access to all cards and there is no optimal build you can have 3 loadouts and you choose after the game beggins and you know who you are playing against
Turning off your lightsaber during combat is stupid. If you are locked together and you turn your lightsaber off. The enemy is going to just continue their cut before you can turn your sword back on. He's already in motion and you're taking your fingers off the strongest grip you could have to turn your lightsaber off. Even if you get your saber back on and get your opponent guarantee you still are getting tagged and dying too.
So gonna kinda argue against the turning off and on again, because I can think of a legit reason why the Sith would not turn it off and on again, if you turn it off while swinging and the other person is swinging, you lost your defense when the lightsaber is off, so if the other person swinging is faster than you can hit that button again and get to the kill shot you'd be dead because they didn't turn off their lightsaber. However I haven't seen that argument made by anyone associated with star wars but that's my only head cannon as to why they don't do that.
Why do people think Rey cared about her parents being “somebody” ? She just wanted her family. It’s always weird hearing people say “oh they retconned Rey” they already did that.
I don't know what you're talking about because I never had the face Darth Vader in Star Wars Battlefront 2 but instead I had to face against Bosque or Boack or whatever the hell that guy was pretty much getting snapped across the whole entire f****** map constantly because of that thing and no matter how many times I pushed forward would just get killed by either gas or buy another bullet. Yeah there was the Yoda players and they were extremely annoying because Yoda is a small ass character so you couldn't just fire from the hip . You had to aim down. But yes you are right that the new Battlefront games literally just relied on Heroes and everybody else in the background is just there in the background if you weren't a hero you were just not f****** important and you just did Jack all on the battlefield especially when you had a hero that just never f****** died. Oh my God they were just being matches upon matches where the person would just instantly get the hero and would just never die and would rack up a 1000 kill streak. And then here I am when I finally get to play a General Grievous I instantly get killed by like a f****** clone trooper with a rocket and then get told that General Grievous is the weakest hero you need to be playing all the other Heroes when I want to play General Grievous because I actually like General Grievous! And now the new collection which is just the old collection that they tried to revamp is absolutely terrible from lag being one of the main issues that people are having issues with their bullets going through enemies and a lot of the online features that we were hoping to get back or just not there and people really wanted there Galactic Conquest online but yet they refused to give it to us because reasons.
If you play on PC? Get the original Battlefront 1 & 2 and not the £60 remaster collection, as the original runs better, takes up less drive space, and looks better, not to mention being much much cheaper! As for my Favorite Star Wars Game, it was Shadows of the Empire on the N64!
21:24 "There is never a moment in any piece of Star Wars media that is Canon where [a droideka] loses." Has Karl not seen the animated shows, or does he think they're non-canonical?
I always joke that the movies are the worst part of starwars. So many interesting themes to explore and stories to tell? But instead they just focus on this one family over a 50 year period, in a universe where there has been millenia long space faring empires.
By far, the most frustrating episode you've ever made. Lol. There are plenty of Canon novels. The droidekas get beat in Clone Wars, which is Canon. And Empire at War is the current definitive Star Wars RTS and is kept alive by the modding community. It would be great to get a new RTS at some point though. And Karl, can we not enjoy Star Wars because it's fun? Most of us know that it's not perfect and you yourself say you watch trash TV. I'm frustrated by Star Wars too, but you can find interesting concepts in many many places.
True, but why should someone have to scour through hours of media just to find something they'd like somewhere else that's more readily accessible. Just saying
Star Wars is frustrating because it's the ultimate wasted opportunity universe. When it was just the original movie trilogy, some novels and a handful of video games, it was great. Very little chaff. Then the prequels happened and it all went to shit; even the few good bits that came along were massively outweighed by the trash.
One of my favorite things from the old Battlefront 2 game was discovering that Jedi could redirect rocket launcher missiles. Power cycling bs.

Then they could even utilize it as a gimmick- a last ditch effort technique against a far stronger opponent, say that it's, like, a 20% chance it works or something and every other time it's going to end in being weaponless or dead. Galactic battlefields was pretty great. Slightly better graphics than a war craft 2, but much more complex with 10 or 12 playable races.
Ps2 battlefront 2 was my favorite. I still have it.
Am I the only one who read the title as if they were afraid of wiki weekends?😂
I'd love to have Chirrut Îmwe! (Donnie Yen from Rogue One)
Starwars RTS was basically a reskin of Aoe2
I dont suggest playing the new "STAR WARS™: Battlefront Classic Collection" They turned a 3gb game into a 73gb game without adding new content.
That's the least of the issues
I'm pressing play on this vid expecting the answer to be "sex".
Masters of teras-kasi was the GOAT
Master is my friends and I favorite
No mention of the force unleashed? Im shocked
If you play on PC? Get the original Battlefront 1 & 2 and not the £60 remaster collection, as the original runs better, takes up less drive space, and looks better, not to mention being much much cheaper!
As for my Favorite Star Wars Game, it was Shadows of the Empire on the N64!
Im interested to see what all those games are behind lucas
Star wars Empire at is a great game give it a try
21:24 "There is never a moment in any piece of Star Wars media that is Canon where [a droideka] loses."
Has Karl not seen the animated shows, or does he think they're non-canonical?
My favorite Star Wars game is Fortnite. 😂
The newer comics and novels are cannon.
Allo!
I always joke that the movies are the worst part of starwars.
So many interesting themes to explore and stories to tell? But instead they just focus on this one family over a 50 year period, in a universe where there has been millenia long space faring empires.
Empire at war wasn't bad...very similar to battle for moddle.earth..
Just saying
Sweatlords FTW!!!!!
To me the thing about star wars content is its just so much mid content that is trying to capture the magic of the original series.
not liking voice acting in lego games makes you two sound very old
Okay.
Older Lego games had more charm to them because of the lack of voice acting
