Definitely self fit, got quoted £12K for all the windows and 2 doors in a small 3 bed semi, bought the windows myself from the same local manufacturer they use and only paid £3200 plus the fee to get the local authority to sign it off, did it all in a week too.

With the packers, as you wont need them to keep the glazing units above any water ingress line, the packers really are there so that the sight lines of the spacer bars of the glazing units are equidistant on each side in respect of the glazing beads. You probably won't have issues with UV damage but, generally, it's always advisable to keep the glazing primary seals away from sunlight too.
With heel and toe, set the bottom packers to get the sight lines correct (as above) and then place corresponding packers in the top corner as well. Again, it's all about getting the glazing unit to sit square in the frame and be well supported and right for the sight lines. If the door does not shut properly at the bottom (and assuming the door frame is not strengthened with steel), you can pack the top of the frame slightly upwards so that the frame becomes a slight parallelogram. This causes the bottom corner to rise and gives you clearance, always trying to preserve the sight lines as much as possible. If it sticks at the top, remove packers from the top so that the top of the frame drops. You may need to pack the top side out slightly to keep the glass well held. Remember, the glass is the stronger structure (up to a point), the frames are relatively floppy.
When putting in the beads, start at the top and get the centre inserted, gradually working toward each corner. Use you body to keep the glass in position. On the sides, spring top and bottom into place and accept that there is a slight bow in the middle. Locate now the centre, and work toward the edges equally with your glazing mallet. If the beads are stubborn you can use something like uPVC cleaner or Brite to act as a temporary lubricant. Best not to hammer the beads too furiously as they get damaged if forced too much.
All of this said - excellent job and well done.

I'm really glad you attempted fitting it yourself and covered the process in this video. I am looking forward to the next video covering fitting the other french doors. Over a few years we had various companies fit double glazed windows and doors, when it come to doing our final one which were the patio doors we fitted them ourselves we felt we had fitted them far better and wish we had fitted all of our other windows and doors, and that is what we would certainly do in the future. I think your video shows how possible it is to do it yourself

Well done and a great saving in cash. I used that brand of expanding foam recently around window frames and it was a similar nightmare to dispense without it expanding everywhere it shouldn't. I found out the hard way that if you wipe it off plaster and let it dry you can't paint over it with emulsion (similar to sealant). Had to sand it off the plaster in the end.

Being honest if you can do it your self then do it, you can save a lot of money. I fitted window in my porch about a month ago, my windows are reclaimed but look good for the porch. I did buy new sills and fascia boards and they are made by Liniar, Quanex. I used 125mm concrete and wood screws and expanding foam. Your video footage is fine, as always a great video take care

  • @Iamthesheese

a tip for the expanding foam is to put the straw into a silicone nozzle, reduces the output and the rigidity makes it easier to control.

And if you have to do a lot, get yourself a foamgun, its much easier to control and the screw-on cans tend to be a bit cheaper, they also keep longer as long as you keep the gun on the can and its nozzle clear (a spray-on foam cleaner is golden as are some of the wipes)

I honestly wouldn't worry about the certificates, I asked about them for the electrics and gas in my house everyone shrugged and it came down to do yo want to buy the house or not. If enough time passes by the time a house is up for sale they don't seem to mean much, you certainly wont find any for the practically full rewire and log burner install that I did 😂

I think you'd be better to install the next set of doors to the outside opening outwards. You'll lose a lot of floor space otherwise and, as someone else says below, if it's been raining and you open your doors, the water on the doors will run off onto your floor. Nice job on these doors, it's always easier with a bit of swearing!

Maybe. months later and it still should work even if it's got foam inside it .If it does happen to block you can buy foam cleaner as well. Sorry I don't remember the exact names for these products. but I bought mine from Screwfix. And remember, the cans have a different connector on the top than the one you were using. But they're no different price.

If you ever need to redo the heel & toe packers, buy yourself a Purdy decorator tool, they have a narrow knife edge, strike-through handle and are stiff enough to safely use as a lever to get the glass beads out. I second the ‘choking the hammer’ comment, hammers strike much better when swung from the end of the handle. I’d also suggest making some folding wooden wedges to help when fitting the next set with a pair of wedges located directly under each post, that way, the door frame will be held solidly up against the lintel and they are infinitely adjustable. I made a jig for my table saw for thick and thin wedges.

You can simply pay your local building control to sign off the windows if you do fit yourself. In my area it’s around 200- 300 plus vat for up to 8 windows. Building control checked the windows before installation. Having the energy rating documentation meant they did not have measure the glass etc. they made some recommendations about the installation (number of fixings and location). After install a visit to check all signed off. When the property was sold the solicitor did indeed ask for a FENSA certificate, but building control sign off was accepted otherwise would have to bought indemnity insurance. Whilst it would not stop you buying a place, you probably would want some money off the purchase for the hassle.

Good first try could have allowed a 20 mm add on or 30 mm stub cill on the bottom of the doors to make more floor height but it looks ok to me also you can adjust the doors on the hinges to gain extra 15 mm if needed 👍

I learnt the hard way with expanding foam. Buy a proper gun. Makes it sooo much easier to control and get some gun cleaner as it makes keeping the equipment in good working order.

You did a great job, only slight criticism is you should have left the protective film on the UPVC until you used the expanding foam. Getting foam off the UPVC isn't fun.

You can always trim a bit off the top of the frame, looks like you had plenty of room for the doors to open.

Top Gear top tip...... you can gain another 6mm (either side, or top/bottom) fitting these if you take any electric plane and machine off the outer parts of the profile - if you find yourself stuck again.

Well done, but please hold the hammer by its handle, stop choking it!! You'll find each strike with the hammer is then more effective. Agree with other comments about soapy water helps PVC slide and not to use a wallpaper scraper as a lever. I'd also like to see you using gloves more, your bare hands are precious!! But you are doing very well, which is a delight to watch.

I was scared when all that foam started going everywhere, that stuff can be a nightmare to clean up! Highlight of the video for me....watching Hans stare at his ball after dropping it at your feet, he didn't care what you were saying it was fetch time

Haha.... I was frightened too!! It went straight in a carrier bag to let it do it's thing. We got it all off, but had to edit lots of swearing out of the video 🤣

Hope you checked the welds on that liniar french with sidelights as it looks like it's from Pearl windows and there quality is not the best, most liniar suppliers like TrueFrame and modplan would of split and cuppled the frame as making it as one weakens the frame so they say. Contact Morley glass and get them Double glazed units with the blinds in the glass, they look good and stop pets pulling at the blinds.
