I never knew clams are living creatures that can swim. I always thought they were non moving animals that just lingered at the bottom of the sea floor.
Except for scallops and their closest non-scallop relatives (file shells), no species of clams, oysters, and other bivalves can swim when fully grown. However pretty much all species can burrow through sediment to get from place to place, tunnelling underneath the seafloor. Some species can also walk on the sea floor or even on land. They're not exactly fast, but they're not permanently stuck to one place like a lot of other filter feeding animals. Scallops first appeared in the early Triassic period (a little bit before the first dinosaurs), having adapted the powerful muscle which all bivalves use to close their shells for protection into a swimming mechanism. By flexing that muscle rhythmically, the motion of its shells opening and closing acts like a bird flapping its wings, enabling them to swim. Its an EXTREMELY inefficient system which uses up a ton of energy, so they really only ever swim when they're trying to escape danger.
All my 20 years of existence I have never seen how a scallop moves. I thought it moves slowly like starfish. Yes, I am today years old when finding this out
Scallops can indeed swim, but they also have hundreds of tiny eyeballs between the rims of their shells that can spot you from almost any angle The ocean is weird :)
For what it's worth, most bivalves are much less mobile than scallops - they're designed more for digging into the substrate than swimming in the open water. Scallops are very unique!
