Very timely video. This morning a shackle came out of my buddy's harness on his Black Hawk. His lock ring could have been better, cheap wire instead of a ring. He took off and landed without knowing it was gone. It pulled left but all was well. New shackle with lock ring ordered.Good to know a soft shackle can be so strong. Thanks Kyle O
Screw pin shackles are really designed to be bolted through a piece of plate. Also that doesnt look like a load rated lifting shackle. The gap is wide in proportion to the rest of it. I was still surprised it broke first tho.
Thanks Kyle! I have a couple soft shackles on my spyder 3. I lost an O-ring on a soft shackle. Getting a new one on there surely would have been easier on the hard shackle. I had read they were stronger, but this simple test made me feel better. Thanks for the video AGAIN I love learning from DESTRUCTION!
Wow. That hook sure did fly. I have also heard just how strong soft shackles are and now great to see a demo. I'm glad you didn't get hurt Kyle! If you got hurt, that would have rymed with Kurt and you'd have been a Numb nutz or a knuckle head or something like that:)) Sandy
How weird, my flying buddy emailed this RUclips video this afternoon and I lost my shackle flying this morning. Good job, you might want to protect your foot and led next time.
Soft shackles at PoA or carabiners is a great idea. I've seen 2 videos of carabiner failure on a glider and the results were disturbing.. Redundancy where it counts the most!
Cool video Kyle Every thing has a load rating I think you would be surprised At the load rating of the rope Lol it’s more than you think Unfair test but fun to watch
when I saw your first test setup I instantly knew that the s hook would be the first thing to go. Even if it didn't slip off it definitely would have straightened out prior to anything else going wrong. LOL
Cool test, but since the shackle wasn't through a swing arm like it usually would be, this introduced bending stress, which is typically the highest stress in combined loading. In a swingarm that bolt would have to shear off, which is not what happened here.
I enjoyed that probably too much :0. I was curious as to what kind & size line that was??? I’m a believer in the soft shackles now ;9) Honestly tho - I’ve never used em :0/
Thing is no where in reality will we put that much pressure on our shackles unless God himself is jerking on your wing. Still a good video showing us what could happen. What was the soft shackle made from? 1/4" braided nylon? That's a tough rope to begin with but this test proved it's worth in our field of use. I keep a roll of it in my kite bag and the RV for emergencies. Blue Sky's and Safe Journeys!
@@kyleoglee yes it is. I had a roll but it disappeared somewhere in my travels. Heck I have 2 rolls of kevlar kite string 50 & 100# and a few feet of sheathing! I had to replace 2 lines on my wing after I got it.
Very nice! We know all You Tube viewers are primarily interested in death and carnage. This was really good carnage! I've got to get the lowdown on those soft links. What knot do you use? I know how to put an eye splice 7x19 wire rope. Wonder how THAT would do in a break test?
why not use farming equipment Pin Anchor Shackles. i have alot for my trackors at back out at home. they are bigger then my fist and i'm 6ft. i don't have small hands XL gloves (US) are like a fine skin tight fit.
I just finished my paragliding course and one of the guys who started his course in Hong Kong 2 years ago wanted his reserve repacked because it hasn't been done since, he threw it and the whole pack hit the ground unopened! It was packed wrong!! Also it had what looked like 3rd hand carabeaner with a nice scratch on the inside! So if his reserve did deploy it more than likely it would have snapped! So he would have died either way? NOT COOL!!!
@@goldwingerppg5953 It's not the force issue. I don't like the fact that shackles will loosen if not secured, this happened to me once. Straps are a much cleaner solution and with surprising strength. Now I'm wondering if there is any advantage to using the old metal shackles verses the cloth carabiners.
Fairbanks Air Riders I actually had a shackle fall off recently. I flew without realizing I had lost one of my shackles, but I notice my takeoff and landing was poor and flights seemed strange. Against incredible odds my flying buddy found my shackle when he landed and when I landed I told him about my issues. That’s when he showed me he had found my shackle, which help explain my issues. I’m not against rope shackles and my use them at some point, but you’re right, you have to make sure they are secured and more susceptible to failure then rope.

Awesome Test! If I had to bet on that , I would have lost! Do more like this! Thanks for sharing!
Crazy how we automatically assume the steel fasteners will be stronger. Nice video.
Long-time watcher, first-time commenter ;) Love your videos. Please show how you made your soft shackles.
Wow not what I expected. I'm amazed at the strength of those soft shackles!
Show us how to tie the knots you used in those soft shackles.

Think I’ll be adding some soft links to backup my carabiners and shackles
Good idea

Glad to see your toes came through unscathed!
Insteresting to see. I have heard soft shackles were really strong, but to see it in a test like this is eye opening.
That is the single most amazing video you have ever put on RUclips!
I like the soft shackle. Updating my reserves shortly.
Interesting Kyle! Glad it didn't shoot through your face shield... 😲
Holy crap that thing went flying at you. Damn fine test there sir.
Nice shacklelogy 👍🏼
So glad you didn't lose any teeth! Always entertaining, my friend...

Very Interesting.
Most excellent! Great information. Thanks!
Do you make your own soft shackles? If so, could you do a quick how-to video on that? 👍

@@12vibaba thanks.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing
Of course, it depends on what material the soft shackle is made from ..... as you can see they stretch to absorb load.
UHMWPE Has near zero stretch. It is one of its shining qualities.
That soft link looks very very familiar...
Cool video Kyle
Every thing has a load rating
I think you would be surprised
At the load rating of the rope
Lol it’s more than you think
Unfair test but fun to watch
Great test! Wish we could've seen how many pounds of force that was. Guessing over 3k lbs., I would bet.
I’d like to see the same test but with a Crosby brand shackle but that was awsome
Wow! What size is the soft shackle rope?
6mm
I'll have to find a tutorial how to knot these up properly, I have a ton of spare paracord to mess with
when I saw your first test setup I instantly knew that the s hook would be the first thing to go. Even if it didn't slip off it definitely would have straightened out prior to anything else going wrong. LOL
Button head soft shackles have proven to be the strongest design.
Slow day hey Kyle, interesting none the less.

Good point. I had the thought as well, but this was "recreational testing" 😉
Any idea of the tinsel strength rating on those soft shackles?
Teasing us with that short video LOL just a taste🤘🌮🤘🌮🤘🌮
What’s that thing they say about things that don’t bend?
They say "they don't bend". 🤣
I enjoyed that probably too much :0. I was curious as to what kind & size line that was??? I’m a believer in the soft shackles now ;9) Honestly tho - I’ve never used em :0/
It would be interesting to destruct them with some type of scale to see how much of a load they can actually handle.

You could always heat the metal to see if the scratches are cracks.
Cool info ! Nice test 🤣 thank you
dont they make small shackles in high-grade steel like bolts rated for aircraft?
Yes, shackles are made from many different alloys.
Hey Kyle was that a 2 ton jack.? If so the soft shackles are pretty damn strong.
3 ton
